Basically defensive ling baneling is a better response to banelings than roaches. The reason for this is that bfore lair tech and roach speed, you can't really be super effective on the offense with roaches. They are best used for defense , which means even if you defend your opponent's attack, he can drone behind it and get a better economy and there's nothing you can do about it. If, on the other hand, you defend with banelings and lings of your own, thepossibility of a counterattack is always uppermost in his mind and he will not be able to power his economy as easily.
again, this is true in higher leagues, where every player has boss control. But you gotta remember Dhal, in lower leagues players don't have the super apm and game sense necessary to use banelings wisely. It's not uncommon to see lower league players accidentally smash their banes into a bunch of roaches and then fall way behind.
I don't know. From a learning perspective I'd say it's better to use roaches at first till you get better at unit control, then start messing around with bane/zerg.
That's at least what I did. zvz was always my strongest matchup.
You aren't going to get better at using banelings by avoiding their use.
True enough. But for a beginner, being good with banelings is probably item number 164 on a list of things they need to learn to do first. Again, the teaball example is what I'd use. One could say "you're not gonna get better at hitting a ball if you don't use a pitcher." And yet the standard practice is to have kids swing at a ball on a tea first until they learn to swing the bat. Obviously, swinging a bat correctly is an important first step in learning to hit a pitch. Maybe it's a bit counter-intuitive, but it seems to work. Apparently, you CAN get better at hitting a pitch without using a pitcher.
And maybe you can get better at using banelings by avoiding their use...
I just gave myself chills.
I think a better analogy would be if you were trying to get beter at swinging a golf club and you tried to learn by playing badminton. Sure, in theory your hand eye coordination might improve and indirectly improve your golf, but it'd be better just to go and play golf.
Nah, I don't think that's a good analogy. I mean, what's the number one most important thing when using a baneling? Unit control, right? Banelings are dumb little bastards that require constant supervision or else they have a tendency to waste themselves.
But of course banelings aren't the only unit that requires good control. Roaches require unit control as well. It's just far, far easier to control them. If a player is starting out in this game, what hope do they have of controlling those finicky little baneling bastards if they can't even efficiently control roaches?
It's not the same as your analogy where the benefits of playing badminton have almost zero affect on your skill as a golfer. Learning to control a roach can help you improve your unit control in general, and that lesson can be directly applied to your banelings when you finally get good enough to move on to them.
I know you're just dying to disagree with me because your a mighty grandmaster and I'm just a very attractive platinum, but this line of thinking is applied to most sporting events today. It's actually one of the reasons I like day 9 so much. He emphasizes learning in parts and focusing on fundamentals.

we have already kinda decided the whole 'i'm a master shut up' thing is bad practice, accusing someone of doing it in what is a so-far normal discussion also = bad practice

Well, three things about that.
1. I was mostly just teasing him
2. I like to take any opportunity I can to let other people know I'm very attractive
3. Dhal's done it before. I can site precedent. (Though he did seem to be just kidding).

I'm planning a journey to track down Vari's first post. I'll need 3 weeks worth of food and water, deep sea diving equipment, animal tranquilizer and 10 strong men who aren't afraid to die. Any volunteers?
I have lurked since like... 2003?
But I only started posting 4 or 5 months ago when I got into the Starcraft thread.
I generally use the PA forums as a barometer of whether a game is worth getting or not. If I drop into a game's thread and don't find their discussion of the game interesting, I generally pass.

I tried to make an exception for BlazBlue in another era. But I just found that game so... uh... my hands are old.

Mass effect has to be the exception. That game is amazing but the PA thread is terrifying

So many console games I want to play, but I don't own a tv. If I had hours and a tv, I would probably be playing the hell out of SSX right now, while sneaking in time for Mass Effect 3. Also, I never really got more than a quarter of the way through Mass Effect 1. But the horrifically named Commander Derek Shephard rocked the shit out of Mass Effect 2.
