Also yeah Terry Goodkind is shit. I read Wizard's First Rule and it was pretty bad, and I've heard he only gets worse from there. Dude needs to pay someone to tie him up and whip him, get it all out of his system.
The worst fantasy trope is the casual use of magic and the supernatural
If it must exist, then it should never be a utility, more like a natural disaster
300 pages straight of mundane combat and such and then one idiot tosses a small fireball and blows his arm off and destabilises temperature in the area

No see casual magic is fine
as long as it is used well
Could you give me an example? I'm genuinely intrigued to see how this is done

I think The Dresden Files pulls it off pretty well. The main character is a detective in Chicago that is also a wizard. Normal stuff he does is picking up some blood or hair and using a simple spell for a quick hot/cold tracker. Or saying the true name of a fairy to summon him, paying him and his buddies in pizza, and using them as informants and spies. It's not all fireballs all the time, and he always carries a gun because sometimes it works just as well, and it only starts getting "FUCKING WIZARD BATTLES YAAAAARRRGH!" at the climax.

Earthsea yes, actually, you have a point
I mean, I prefer it to be used less if possible, but it should at least have some kind of serious cost or repercussion. I always wanted to see a wizard who had to sport a complex metallic suit and set of coils to avoid being electrocuted when he tossed a lightning bolt.

I think $130 for the character piece and $110 for the custom avatar.
