The Osprey's best if built to tank. Upgrade to Shields 2 and Artillery 2 ASAP, with a secondary focus on engine for more evade whenever you can. If you're blocking all the lasers/beams and dodging all the missiles, you have ample time for your Artillery to charge up.
I'm just saying Osprey's Best Style plays out like a Kestrel C-Student layout.
Bah! Artillery beam is the only guaranteed damage in the game. An Osprey tank is nigh unbeatable. Pack max shields, healthy engines, and two defense drones. Bring along some bombs to take out particularly troubling weapon systems. Bada bing.

It's not any worse against rockets than most of the other ships. And starts with a burst ii, so it will push through the shields of most of the early game enemies.

Direct, indirect, and financial missile damage counter measures include cloak, zoltan shields, drones, bombs, good missiles, ion guns, teleporters, good engines, and uncommonly strong starting guns.
The starting Osprey takes a long time to kill stuff, gets hit often by missiles that are fired, is sub-par at disabling weapon systems, and can't mitigate the lost money with teleporter scrap bonuses.
But every other ship CAN do 1-2 of those things well from the beginning.
I'm pretty sure it tends to have the lowest or near the lowest success rate on Normal because of this.

I made a game! Hotline Maui. Requires mouse and keyboard.
I finally managed to unlock the Mantis Cruiser last night. I'll be giving it a spin later, since I really enjoy boarding-focused builds. I know the Rock A or B is best when going for the Crystal ship, but what might be the best vessel for going after the Slug Cruiser? I have all the other vessels and most of the alternate loadouts.

The Mantis is actually really bad to hunt the Slug cruiser with, as you won't know whether you are at the event until you force the Slug captain to try to bribe you to back off. If you go after the crew, you never get those offer events period, because it's only triggered at low hull.

Take this for what it's worth, but I finally unlocked the Slug ship with the good ol' reliable Kestrel-B a few days ago.

I had all the events lined up perfectly to get the Slug Ship, but when it came down to destroying that one light slug ship that's guarding the cruiser, somehow my shots just kept missing a lot and it jumped away.

Had a great run going. Managed to get 2 BL2s in sector in the Shivahn on normal. Had a ship that was being a butt, took me a bit to get weapons disabled. I fired a salvo into the medbay leaving the ship at 1 hp and teleported my dudes in to clean. Oh look medbay's on fire. Had just enough time to see that before the ship fell apart as fired finished off some other system I couldn't see. Guess I shoulda upped my sensors.
Was gifted 2 mantis crew members by the RNG in sector 1 and felt like I owed it to myself to try a teleporter. It was fun to murder fools, but I died in sector 2 because I only had 1 shield bubble.
Gah! Had such a promising stealth B run cut short when 6 mantises boarded my ship and the first enemy volley smacked my medbay. Now I know how all those AI ships must feel.
Got a good feeling about this one. 2nd sector in, I have a teleporter, 2 shield bubbles, a halberd beam, and I got the crystal guy out of the pod.
Now it's time for bed.
they're making a game where you start with a ship and have to assassinate another specific ship. You can blow up other ships that are protecting it and stick the remains of their hull onto yours and get to areas that were previously off limits but only if no one else saw you. Also you have to destroy the target ship by making it look like an accident, if you don't people will become suspicious and you will draw attention to yourself making the next missions harder.
Anyone noticed that if you time your laser shots correctly, you can sometimes shoot down an incoming missile?
Yup. You can shoot down your own drones that way, too.
I love the fact that they made it so that any of these things can happen. One time during phase 2 of the final boss I had a loadout that could not pierce through the shields effectively and my missiles could not get past his defense drone. He couldn't hit me either, though, so I kept firing lasers and managed to take down his defense drone. He was out of drones after that from trying to send all his boarding drones at me, so after that I just fired a missile at his shields and it was smooth sailing from there.
I once took down an enemy's drone control, and their anti-ship drone began drifting across my hull. It came to rest basically right in the middle of my ship. Later in the fight, the enemy repaired their drone control. The drone reactivated and began moving to it's normal place on the edge of the screen. Except it was so far away its first shot went off before it moved outside of my shields and got a free hit, avoiding them altogether.
Thus proving that FTL actually takes place in flatland.

Also I gotta say guys... the crystal ship is kind of disappointing. Mantis B basically blows everything out of the damn water. Its... way better than crystal B.

Maybe you don't realize just how locked down things can be!
Yeah, I like both a lot, but the Crystal B has crystal crew. Crystal crew members are amazing. You don't NEED to disable their medbay when you have crystals. Your teleporter doesn't NEED to sit idle during automated ship fights.
Even better is when you're in the Crystal B and you recruit some Mantis for the best of both worlds. 2 Crystal and 2 Mantis are nigh unstoppable.
Even super extra better is when you make it to the Rock Homeworld sector and realize that you get a free trip to the Crystal sector without all that stasis pod BS.
Unlocked the Slug ships today, so I have all of them now. Completed the mission with the Federation Cruiser B, no sweat. Beat the final boss with it, too. I think my problem getting the slug ships is that, by the time I get to their sector I'm usually in crew-killing mode and don't really do hull damage much anymore. The Fed B don't really cotton to that play style, though, so it was the perfect ship to get the job done.
The Slug A is kinda hilarious with the Anti-Bio Beam schtick, but the Slug B... if we're talking about teleporter-based ships... the Slug B has got to be the dead last in the rankings. Oh lordy is that ship terrible. Or maybe it's my luck... It took me five or six attempts to even find a laser weapon, something that can take down zoltan shields and medbays without using missiles.
And the teleporter pad is only 2-man. I might find some use for the Slug B if it had a 4-man teleporter like the Crystal B and Mantis B, but a 2 man teleporter in exchange for not having a medbay OR sensors OR a non-missile weapon?
Don't get me wrong, I got a chuckle out of the Heal Burst vs. Medbay thing, but, for being so tricky to get, the Slug ships are jokes. I guess that makes sense, given their characterization in the game.
Fuck you game. If you're going to give me a blue option to use my fire weapons to clear out a ships crew, maybe you shouldn't make 2/3 of the crew fucking rockmen.

Got the random events needed to find the Slug ship, got to the destination only to finally notice my ship has no sensors.
The Engi B is rough, man. Super susceptable to events (one wrong move and you can game over if you haven't hired any extra crew), and no sensors.
I managed to win with the Slug A, which is actually hilariously fun after you get a teleporter and/or the means to blow past shields for the Anti-Bio Beam, but the Slug B still eludes victory; that fucking ship has the worst set-up and the worst gear. I also have uncanny bad luck with it (bless you, zoltan pirate with an ion blaster and Anti Ship Drone II in Sector 1).

It's debilitatingly weak early, and it takes a long time for the early handicap to pay off.

But it's so bad against rocket enemies in the first few sectors that it rarely survives that long with that much money.
It's usually a failure cascade of bleeding out money into hull repairs.
