The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I've recently had a craving for hip hop and want to make a themed CD for cruisin' in my car. I thought it would be a good idea to gather a great number of song recommendations from you fine folks and then I can pare that down (or make multiple discs).
What I'm looking for: recommendations for any and all great, awesome, definitive, popular, catchy, etc. hip hop tracks. I want your classic oldskool beats, your modern-day hits, your mainstream favourites, your independent on the DL gems--I want them all. Assume I don't know "the greats" and don't be afraid to overwhelm. The plan is to gather a huge list from which I can make selections.
I like the rap, but I think I'm looking for some more energetic stuff.
Maybe I'm actually looking for two groups--that laid back rap/hip hop stuff to chill to and then more energetic hip hop, more musical.
So, lots of what spool brought would be good for Group A and then I liked the Jurassic 5, Dizzee, Lethal Bizzle, Tribe, etc. for Group B.
I though I remembered like stuff by Lupe and I know I liked some N.E.R.D. stuff, although not that particular track (for this purpose).
I'll see if there's been more posted--I'm posting after reading up to Malkor's post.
Thanks guys--keep them coming!

I'll second the roots (personally, i like their 4 newest the best. Do Yo Want More is also great too) [although i just read your "more energetic" post... so I'm not sure they fit. They are super awesome and I def recomend checking them out anyway.)
Coincidentally, I ordered Witness' Everafter LP a few weeks back finally came in today. Love his sound, and the art is done by Studio Qube over here in Toronto. It's such a groove album.
and even though it's probably not what you are looking for, I love this guy, and he calls what he does hip hop. And everyone should hear this at least once.
Thanks for keeping the suggestions coming. I haven't had any time the last couple days to listen to any of the posted tracks, but I should have more time this weekend. Keep the tunes coming!
Yeah, The Roots is pretty sweet. More relaxed/chill than I'm looking for here, I think, but am definitely glad to have found them.
Anyway, if anyone still cares to suggest more songs, I'd definitely be glad to check them out. Thanks!
Glad to hear you dig The Roots! I will say that their albums "Rising Down" and "Game Theory" are more angry and aggressive, so maybe you should check them out first?
Yeah, I know it's hard to suggest just "hip hop"; I'm also not exactly sure what it is that I'm looking for, so it's hard to point out.
For example, your Blackstar track is good, but too more chill than I'm craving, although it's good. (Blackstar - Definition, however, is more what I'm looking for). Those Mos Def and Dead Prez tracks are good, along the lines fo what I'm looking for. And I quite enjoy BOB--forgot I had that song, actually.
When I say energetic, I'm meaning the song/beat but also the rapping/singing overtop. Some of what I've called a little bit relaxed in this thread has had beats that are good, but the rapping was very relaxed over it. It's hard for me to articulate what I'm meaning here.
As an example of a song I have that is in line with what I'm looking for would be Classified - Hard To Be Hip Hop.
Hopefully I've been somewhat helpful. I definitely appreciate people trying to help me out here.
Checking them out now. The first one is definitely more aggressive, but with the rap itself, still lacking something. Not relaxed, that's for sure, but not as "bouncy" as what I want? Don't really know.
I did make a note that Guns Are Drawn might fit more with what I'm looking for (from The Roots).
the drum track on guns are drawn is ridiculous. Unfortunately what the roots do is fairly unique; not that many acts have a band and none of them have ?uestlove.

Weerd Science and Buck 65 are pretty cool--really like that Weerd Science track.
SHAD was pretty funny and good stuff, but not sure any of that will work with what I'm looking for. Keeping note of him though--enjoyable!
Witness was pretty sweet--very relaxed and chill.
spool: like those--they're fun--but I don't think they'll work for what I want here. Closer to it, though. Thanks for the suggestions.

LaOs, give some feedback on what you're hearing here and people will be better able to make recommendations. "Hip-hop" is a gigantic genre.

Unfortunately the sound quality here is terrible, but you can get an idea.
Young Buck, The Game, Ludacris - Stomp
Ghostface Killah & Jadakiss - Run
Beanie Sigel & Jay-Z - Glock Nines
Beanie Sigel & Dirt McGirt - When you hear that (and album intro)
Kanye West - Diamonds
Memphis Bleek - Alright
Jay-Z & Notorious B.I.G. - Allure
