Bioware should try another spiritual successor to BG like they did with DA only this time don't put it in a universe that's boring as shit.
Guess that rules out forgotten realms.
BADUMTSH.
Hey now, hey now
Forgotten Realms is DUMB
It's not boring!
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

Yeah the setting was fine. Fine and forgettable. Perfectly serviceable.
it came close to being compelling but any time you have an oppressive religious cult in charge of people, and damn near everyone seems to be okay with this, I stop being interested
I can't believe how little I know about BGII compared to you people. Some goddamn Baldur's Gate scholars on here.
I don't know how many hours I've spent playing BGII
but if I had to guess, I'd start at two hundred and go up
the only games I've spent more time with are Team Fortress 2 (over a thousand hours, according to Steam) and Final Fantasy VI (which I'd also have to guess at but say it's probably around 300)
I'm not trying to be all up in people's shit, it's just something I've been thinking about lately, because I feel like something's off in Skyrim.
I actually thought Can of Worms worked on two levels you see on the one hand it's a metaphor for starting an argument with a bunch of assholes and their weird opinions on the other hand it's a metaphor for a good fantasy setting and and and and.

Man I dunno. But a good villain helps. Dark spawn are lame. When you have an enemy where it's like "well these creatures are inherently evil and we all agree they should just be wiped out." it's kinda boring.

Agreed. An interesting villain is the most important thing.
I want an action RPG where you play as a D&D style lich just so at the beginning or debut trailer of the game with the heroes storming the tower to kill you the camera swoops down and zooms in on the lich instead of the fighter or something and everyoneis like WHOOOOOOA!
Really I just want a good action game in a D&D type world where you can sling around bigtime magic like no one's business.
But only once a day, then you just sling rocks.
Maybe forget the vancian shit for the videogame's sake.

It's why I ended up loving DA2. Yeah, it's a flawed product, but it's still great. I loved the combat because it was just fun and, as a result, I was able to pay more attention to the atmosphere, which was generally great. I just disliked how lopsided they portrayed the Mage vs Inquisitor dichotomy.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I want a fantasy game where you are a mage but it plays like vanquish.

I have many positive things to say about DA2, even if many of them are immediately followed by negative things
But it's 3:30 AM and I'm still awake AGAIN, so, maybe in the morning

I'm curious, does anyone else feel that the standard LotR/Forgotten Realms fantasy setting is kind of fundamentally racist?
like, not just "Bestial races are Bad." Like, things are just defined racially. Elves and dwarves disagree and hate eachother, gnomes are all vaguely annoying tinkerers or mages, bad elves are Different, etc.
I don't know all that much about ebberon, beyond what could be gleaned from playing DDO briefly, but i feel like it's philisophically more modern? like, orcs have their own kingdom with actual customs and such like? I don't know much about ebberon

I just didn't much care for the combat
which is like 90% of the game

yeah but again he requires reputation tomfoolery to use
Yeah the setting was fine. Fine and forgettable. Perfectly serviceable.
What should a good fantasy setting include?
something something big can of worms...
Would you like slow and painful or fast an merciful.

Okay probably not really but I really like Dark Sun

A combination of silliness and darkness is what I am about, apparently.

but really, I'll play any RPG in a fantasy setting as long as the setting has even the least amount of depth

They're like an undead swarm but with all the cool parts taken out.
I want spiky cultists worshipping rocks in the woods.
It's hard to match up to someone so well written who is also voiced by David Warner
He and Alan Rickman should have a smug-off
But only once a day, then you just sling rocks.

Hey, we kinda agree on something.

I liked the combat in Temple of Elemental Evil. The rest of the game was shit.
Any respect for DA1 went out the window when I realized boss monsters could be frozen.
Also I unwittingly killed the healer because whoops, the mage is a bitch and the healer looked like uptight NPC 7.
But it's 3:30 AM and I'm still awake AGAIN, so, maybe in the morning
And Ebberon is the best setting. Give me a BG style game set in Ebberon
Eberron, Spelljammer, Sigil, that kind of thing
when it's not knights and kings and I guess some wizards
but holy shit magitech empires and stargoing ships and planar cities
like, not just "Bestial races are Bad." Like, things are just defined racially. Elves and dwarves disagree and hate eachother, gnomes are all vaguely annoying tinkerers or mages, bad elves are Different, etc.

there's no actual racism
if the elves were enslaving dwarfs then yeah sure, racism
but they both just don't really like each other and aren't bothered that they aren't like by the others
remember that racism in society is discrimination and also power
standard fantasy fare is more just species essentialist, in a weird kind of way
or as I prefer to call it "badly written monocultures"
