also, playing any kind of technologist is probably the worst mistake you can make

my first character was a half-ogre designed to maximize his starting strength
if your strength goes over 20 you do double damage, plus whatever +str bonuses you would get
so you'd pretty much immediately break the game, and you'd level up so quickly that you could recoup any penalties to your other stats that came from picking the high-str background
mage felt alright as long as you go right for the aoe fire spell and harm. the fireball cleans out enemies super fast, like that early quest to steal the tomb stone with a bunch of dark elves? bam dead instantly

Depends. If you use one of your fate points you can one-hit-kill the gun trainer along the coast south of Tarant and get his sniper rifle, which kills almost all enemies in the game in one or two hits with 99% accuracy after two points in firearms.
But aside from that? Yeah guns and tech are sadly less cool that then should be.

that's the main reason I've never finished it
why put me in a steampunk world if being a dwarven gunslinger is completely ineffectual
why would you do that to me, Troika

I mean, you can MAKE it work. I played Gunslinger most of my run-throughs and did fine.
...with a ton of herbology and potions for where I missed at point blank range with maximum firearms capability for the FIFTIETH TIME.

Because it's Troika, they may love you enough to make the world for you, just don't expect them to do it without breaking a few things
like if god tripped and the earth got a bit scuffed up
one reason I could never really get into arcanum was the fact that you got 5 points to start, and 1 point per level, and 40-50 things to put them into

yeah the progression in that game was FAR too slow, especially for techies
I broke down an bought the EE since I'll be home for christmas with lots of free time and i can run it on my laptop. I've gone through the game once or twice but it's been awhile. Any protips on classes to avoid for a beginner?
Probably just avoid any complex multi-classes and just go for a pure class in something-or-other? Other than monk you can't really go wrong with a single class character...
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
Bows are great because you keep your main dude out of danger while doing great steady damage. If I was going to reroll my wild mage at this point, that's what I'd go for.
if you don't have BG2 you don't even need a kit really, so like regular fighter type, archer, thief or thief/whatever are all good choices. if you are going into BG2 you wouldn't want to pick a kitless fighter, but it's fine in BG1.

Wizard-slayers and inquisitors are kinda unnecessary in BG1.

Well, inquisitors can still be nice for dispelling charms on your party members and stuff, but yeah there's not much reason to specialize against wizards when a bunch of arrows work just as well

I will always fear these
I hate them
like blade spiders on steroids
I want to kill him for his XP and stuff (you don't lose rep), plus he sells dodgy shit
but the fucker is deadly!
I guess I'll come back at a higher level then
sigh...
Oh. I thought you had some kind of self-hating complex going on.
haha, I nearly forgot what my av is
something something robots taking over the spider world something something evil robots
Oh hey your weapons break in like three hits on these things
but every time after I tried to start over I'd get bored about a 1/4 through the game.
