I agree that that is some prime level goosery. But it isn't unheard of for PC games to give you multiple OS downloads for the standard price - I know I have a handful of Mac versions of games I own on Steam available to me, even though I only ever purchased the standard PC editions. Civ IV comes to mind, but i'd have to fire my PC up in the morning to see what other games did that.

That said, generosity like that only works when the various OS versions are all tied to a single Steam account (or similar), ensuring they can't be given away, traded, or sold.

  • DonnictonDonnicton Registered User regular
Hahaha, that's some hilarious idiocy. Yes, everybody who only chips in 15 bucks should get a bazillion copies of the game so they can *cough*bullshit*cough* "play the game on the multiple systems they own".

After all, it is the industry standard to sell people one version of a game that can be played across all the systems they own, right? OH WAIT. Not one single game does that. I can't play my 360 games on my PC, my Android games don't go on my 360, and my PC games only go on my PC.

Which is how it's always been. Anybody who expects otherwise should be punched in the mouth.

    Not nowadays, no.

(remembers the days you could buy Warcraft 1 or 2 and have both the pc and mac versions on the same CD...)

But yeah, expecting multiple copies of a game for $15 that they have clearly stated is a kickstarter-exclusive price and will not end up being the actual launch price.... how entitled can you be?

There are a few games like that though. Just off the top of my head, Enslaved and The Last of Us (though it isn't out yet).

As much as I love them, I don't really think they've done a great job wrapping the last few days of this kickstarter up. Double Fine had a big live stream promotional thing, didn't they? Maybe Fargo will do something similar but at this point, it seems like it's going to finish with more of a whimper than a bang. I hope Obsidian are paying attention and have it all planned out a bit better.

Edit: And by whimper I just mean in comparison to Double Fine's one. inXile are still obviously going to do quite well in the next couple of days, I just think that if they were more active (more videos, livestreams, etc), they could do even better.

What did they do differently? The promotional livestream Doublefine did was the only thing that I remember and that was only for the last hour or so. Fargo's doing the same + the reddit thing (which was bigger and longer than when Tim did it)

We're not even at the last day (still 2 days to go). So, it's premature to say anything on how it will pan out.

I'm just concerned about the lack of momentum and think they could've done more video updates. I hadn't heard they were doing a livestream though. But whatever, at this point I'm pretty confident they'll make it over 3 million. They'll just have to have a really good day tomorrow.

Milking money from those who use multiple platforms is a vile move. I, for example, want to play the game on both my Linux and Windows PCs. If I was only using, say, Windows on my PCs, everything would be OK, but now I have to pay double the price, just because I happen to run several different operating systems? This, in my opinion, is just plain wrong.

I don't even get what his point is. Why does he need to install it on every OS of his? Can't he just boot in the one he gets it on? Are savegames even compatible?

    What?

Most of the indie games floating around out there will grant you a universal license so that you can install the game on whatever platforms you own. Savegames are compatible, why would a developer make their savegame formats incompatible across platforms and double or triple the code they have to maintain for the save system?

If inXile wants to require that you buy the game again for each platform, that's their prerogative, but I think that runs counter to the direction the rest of the market is going.

They're not requiring it. They're just asking you to Kickstart a little more if you want to do that.

I was already at the $30 level before they announced this, so I guess it doesn't really affect me. I run a combination of Linux and Windows at work and home and expected that the game license would allow me to run it on whatever platform I happened to be in at the time. I get that there are development costs that they have to incur to add Linux support and I'm appreciative of it no matter what. Maybe the market would bear a second tier multi-platform license at a 25-50% markup over a single platform? I don't know. But as a consumer, I will always see more value in a product that gives me a blanket license for all platforms over a single one.

Re-reading the updates made me realize that the 3 million "mod-kit" mention was less a promise and more an ideal. Beef is a smart guy, and I'd be surprised if he turned his back on the modding community. I'd rather W2 be a polished product, and want the team to completely focus on the single player aspect. I won't be sad if we don't hit 3M and thus Beef won't worry about being held accountable for another milestone.

This has been one hell of a ride. I encourage you all to aggressively spread the word in these last remaining hours. $15 bucks for this game is a good deal; Fallout was made on a similar budget and it didn't have a clear design from the beginning like Wasteland 2 does. It is without doubt that W2 will be a quality game that appeals to all RPG fans, new and old. Share this shit, bros.

May you never run out of power packs!

Not exactly. It's quite a bit more complicated than that. Just watch this: http://gdcvault.com/play/1015843/Classic-Game-Postmortem and read this http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=60785

    From the article:

Then inspiration hit: Why not remake Wasteland!?

The Wasteland franchise had ended tragically in 1990 with EA’s abysmal sequel Fountain of Dreams. Why not resurrect that incredible game and give it the justice it deserved?

Everyone immediately loved the idea. Tim even mentioned that Steve Jackson Games was working on GURPS: Survivor; a role-playing sourcebook with rules for post-apocalyptic adventuring. What a perfect fit!

The ball was in motion; our first game was going to be GURPS: Wasteland.

It annoys me how many people I end up arguing this point with. Fallout was and always will be a Wasteland remake. I knew Wasteland like the back of my hand, and when I played Fallout, I knew I was playing a remake.

That's all fair and reasonable save for the fact that this is not a finished product and were not actually paying for product at this point. We're funding development of an 'A' title.

This is not some tiny indie project run out of someone's Mom's basement. As such, giving away three copies of the game for $15 is a stupid thing to do, if your secondary goal is to make some decent profit and use that profit to make/support more games in this new paradigm.

Having said that, if all three were tied to a single steam account that would probably be ok... but the entitlement complex of some of those Kickstarter posters is insane... They're worse than the Publishers!!!

No, because that plan was scraped when they couldn't get the license (You actually took the quote completly out of context as this is mentioned right after). It's not a remake. It's really far from a "remake".

You may up arguing this a hunderd times if you wish to do so but I played both too and I disagree. Fallout is certainly a spiritual successor and Wasteland was its greatest influence. It still did have a different gameplay system and a different setting and charachters.

    Edit:
As the team gathered for the upcoming Christmas break, we all shared our ideas of where a GURPS: Wasteland could go. We liked the idea of setting it in Southern California; close enough to the Las Vegas of the first game where we could still use some characters, but different enough where we could tell our own story. Our player would be a member of the Desert Rangers dispatched to So. Cal. to investigate a mutant uprising, or a robot uprising, or something. . . but it was going to be great!

As we were about to end the meeting, Interplay’s legal counsel stepped in to say “have a good holiday!” And, just as he was leaving, he said, “Oh yeah, it turns out that EA still retains the rights to Wasteland. Merry Christmas!”

I had done a lot of thinking over the holiday, and came to a conclusion; So what if EA owns the rights to Wasteland? They don’t own the rights to the post-apocalyptic genre! I told the team, when we met in January, that we should still push forward with our Wasteland-like concept and make it our own. We all agreed: “Screw EA.”

Right after he explains how they wanted to differentiate from Wasteland.

For a short while they played the kickstarter video on the stream. Except with several Fargo's talking at the same time.

Anyway, half an hour till it starts. I stayed up till 4 a.m. for this (Thankfully I don't have to work tomorrow). Finished Yakuza 3 while waiting and fighting sleep.

I pushed my pledge up to $75 in support of this, even though I think $25 for beta access and one novella is a bit expensive. Love Stackpole's stuff though. More importantly, hopefully we hit the $3M mark and get some mod tools!

Yeah, it's definitely going to hit $3M now, it's at $2.886M on kickstarter, and $100k from paypal.

So $2.986M total, $14k to go, and over 3 hours left. Earlier today, it needed $10k/hour to meet it's goal, and it's down to needing less than $5k/hour to reach it. and on http://ruinedkingdoms.com/wasteland2/ it seems it's still pulling in above $10k/hour
