Just a guess but you could try adding the path to displayswitch.exe.
Are you talking about renaming:
;Switch back to your primary display
Run, "Displayswitch.exe" /clone
to
;Switch back to your primary display
Run, "C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe" /clone
?
I tried that but it wouldn't take.
If it's not possible to have it instantly switch between "Second Screen Only" and "Duplicate" when I open and close BPM, are there other shortcuts I could try? Like having it hit Win+P twice when BPM is open, and then hit it once more when it closes?
I've got the script switching the audio the way I want, so if I can just figure out this monitor hurdle I would be golden.
What's weird is that display switching works as a batch file. If I just put
DisplaySwitch.exe /clone
and save that as a batch file, it'll do just that.
I can't figure out how to have a batch file open up Steam BPM, and then switch the display when it closes. My attempts just have it shut off Steam. If I could just figure that out.
Going by the comments of the script you want /internal (to go to primary), /clone duplicates the primary screen, but if that's what you want dunno why it doesn't work.

Curious why your fonts suddenly look terrible in Firefox 40? There's an issue some people are getting with the NVidia 353.62 driver (aka, the only NVidia driver that officially supports Windows 10), so Mozilla disabled hardware rendering for everyone with an NVidia card. Yay!
I attempted to force it back on in about:config and it hosed rendering up so bad that I couldn't even get back to undo my change; had to do a profile refresh and reinstall all my extensions. Sooo maybe don't try that.
I had booted up my netbook again to see what Win10 updates there were so far, and I got this weird, inconsistent performance problem again where every action gets increasingly delayed. At first I thought it was a result of that corrupt admin profile I got when I first upgraded, but that was deleted and remade. On the next boot up, everything seemed fine and responsive. But I've had these bootups where the whole system just starts dragging, taking about 30 seconds to open something, then a minute or two, now it just took like 5 to 10 minutes to open the System window.
It's extremely weird, because when this is happening, Task Manager isn't showing anything going on. The CPU isn't doing much more than about 5%, the disk access works a little here and there and eventually spikes up for a split second, but basically it's not like the PC is working so hard that it's being slow. It's just, not doing anything. Not entirely sure what to do about it, but it seems like some other people are having similar issues with Win10 as well.
so, my dad just got a surface pro 3. should i put windows 10 on it for him? or should i leave 8.1 on it for a while still.
I would wait, unless you want to take advantage of a specific Windows 10 function--obvious example, if your dad has an Xbox One, but there are other things too.
The Surface tablets are literally designed around Windows 8.1, and function pretty darn well with it. I updated my Surface Pro 1 to Windows 10, and it runs fine, but really that was just to take advantage of Xbox compatibility.
You'll always have the option later (well, up to a point).
well, you can run Windows 10 pretty much exactly like 8.1 if you wanted to.
I'm honestly of two minds about that. If you don't have a compelling reason to, than maybe wait, but there's also no real compelling reason *not* to. I personally would, just because I think Windows 10 is better in usability than 8.1 in almost every way, but eh, if he likes 8.1 maybe let him decide.

Honestly, that wouldn't surprise me. Even if the Surface is a perfect Windows 8.1 machine, you really don't "lose" anything if you keep it in tablet mode, and there's something to be said about having a fresh installation of an OS rather than an upgrade (though honestly, it's probably not that much of a distinction).
In my case, my first-gen Surface Pro has no trouble running Windows 10--in actuality, I need to stop being lazy and actually learn the proper functionality but until then, I've kept it in permanent tablet mode, rather than "desktop" or laptop mode. There's no performance issues that I can encounter, but it should be noted that, for its age, the Surface Pro 1 is a pretty high-performance ultrabook. No problems with lag, no crashing or anything blatant like that, but I haven't had an opportunity to test anything "hard" on it, like Starcraft II yet, and see how performance differs.
I've left my work SP3 in Windows 8.1, but that's probably because when my job ends (and I'm presumably allowed to keep it), I'm probably going to give it a full wipe and install Windows 10.
I assumed I could just type in the name of a program and it'd show up for me to run.
But it doesn't do that. If I type Paint or Wordpad or whatever, it says search the web or gives me some other things on my PC somewhat related to "paint". There's a thing at the top that says "We're getting search ready" and has said that every time I search for something since I upgraded to 10.
It feels completely useless; and the newly organized manner of the "all apps" feels counter productive.

I decided to do it since he doesn't really like anything re: computers, and he always got confused in 8.1 whenever a metro app would load in a full screen from the desktop. since windows 10 is supposed to eliminate that (from what I remember), it seemed worth it.
and it'll autoupdate all the time, which is also nice.

What's his opinion on start menus? If he's used an 8.1 system with a start menu replacement, you might want to check whether he prefers the new start menu or wants to keep using the replacement. Before my Windows 10 experience I'd have probably said he probably wouldn't care, but right now I wouldn't want to inflict the All Apps menu on anyone.

Did you change settings or something? If I hit Start, type 'paint', right at the top I get Paint - desktop app, then a couple of Windows Store matches, then web results.

I haven't touched any settings related to search.
I imagine it has something to do with the "We're getting search ready", like my system refuses to compile a list of apps on my pc to search from.
My second PC, also with Win10 now, doesn't have this problem. It functions as expected.
Some setting must be screwed up, I just have no idea where to check. Could it be related to this PC being SSD only? I dunno.
EDIT: yeah, if I click the "We're getting search ready" it tells me windows is still indexing files. I can't imagine it should take over a week to do so.
I'm rebuilding my system index, and going to see if that helps. It had funky settings. I wonder if I messed with them when I built the PC; maybe to try to lessen the load on the SSD?
Silly question, perhaps, but Windows has just told me I can now upgrade to Win 10. Any need for me to sit there while it's doing so, or can I safely let my computer do its thing while we're having dinner?

Let it do its thing. There will be a few questions either up front or at the end, but 99% of it is totally automated.
Thanks. I've just upgraded and it's been completely painless indeed. I was a bit worried about not noting down my desktop setup, but everything seems to have carried over just fine.
Are there any obvious tips and tweaks to check out? (Other than having a close look at the privacy options, that is.)
"Nothing is gonna save us forever but a lot of things can save us today." - Night in the Woods
To be honest this is the first version of windows where I have not immediately wanted to change a bunch of things, just a few tweaks for me. If you used the old start menu to look for programs "all apps" is garbage and you'll want to get a mod for that.
Am I alone in developing an increasing loathing for anyone who refers to Cortana like it has a gender? I know it really shouldn't matter that much to me, but seriously, people, it's a piece of software.
People have been doing the same thing with Siri for years. And Siri wasn't even named after a character with a female appearance from what was already a popular franchise.

Cortana does present a gender. The AI character it's named after from the Halo games is most definitely represented as a female.
I have a new problem with my apps: when I hit the start button on my desktop, the app bar opens on the top left for a split second and then vanishes. When I click it again, it opens like normal, but none of the apps will work. Some shut off immediately (like the Xbox app) and others say it can't connect to the internet (Twitter, Facebook). The Cortana bar (ask me anything) will also not work.
Please help me. I've tried Googling for a solution but nothing works.

You've done the usual rebooting of your system and restarting of the Explorer process, right?
If you mean restarting explorer and restarting my system, then yes. I also tried to do a system restore to the day before (it's the furthest back it will allow me), but that hasn't helped either.
At this point it looks like my options are either to do a re-install (it says it keeps my personal files but deletes all my apps) or roll back to Windows 7.
Edit: Fixed, thank God. I used a batch file in one of the Googled fixes. Everything seems to be working now.
What exactly happens if you revert back to Windows 7? Does it save your configurations/preferences for Windows 10 so you can effortlessly switch back whenever you want to?
What exactly happens if you revert back to Windows 7? Does it save your configurations/preferences for Windows 10 so you can effortlessly switch back whenever you want to?
I'd be surprised if it did, I think it just restores your system to the exact state it was when you started the upgrade.
Which reminds me, I know that after a month the official reversion stops working, but what if you've saved a separate backup of your system while it's still the previous version? Can you reload that at any time, or is your system license permanently mucked up?
Edit: Hmm, if Windows 10 is licensed to my device, does that mean that my current system that I downgraded back to Windows 7 still has a perfectly valid Windows 10 license that I could use in a few years?

So I know you get a month to revert back to Windows 7 if you choose, but does going back to Windows 10 come with a similar restriction?
I assume not, since it's a free upgrade, but just to be sure.
I'm having a few programs I use on a daily basis continue to not work for me, so I'm thinking of going back to Windows 7 until those programs become more compatible. I like the new interface and apps but it's really not worth what I'm losing as a result.
Found this page, which has a bunch of useful information. It may not be completely reliable, but it's the clearest that I've seen so far.
Of note to my question:
Q. Still me with the OEM and Windows 8.1 with the embedded key. What if I upgrade now, and let’s say 16 months from now I want to go back to Windows 8.1 --can I do that? And then back to windows 10 a few months after that? Can I go back and forth whenever I want long as its on the same PC ?
A. YES, YES and YES, although I can’t imagine any usage scenario where you’d actually want to keep flipping back and forth between two operating systems like that.
To the first YES: the ability to simply revert your upgrade from 8.1 to Windows 10 is for just 30 days. After that you can revert back but it will require a reinstall of 8.1.
To the second YES: If you do the Windows 10 upgrade in the first 12 months it will be free for the lifetime of that device so you will be able to install Windows 10 after that on that system.
Edit: I think I'll post a question there about whether you can use a temporary upgrade and immediate reversion to permanently gain a Windows 10 license on a computer you don't want to upgrade now but might in the future.
Just in case, I upgraded and then immediately downgraded Windows 10 on my Surface Pro 3, taking a brief pit stop to turn off the pinch to zoom gesture on the touchpad. The downgrade turned it back on, unfortunately.
Anyone know how to make the updates work smoother? Right now if I use "Sleep" (or w/e the English word is) it will reboot at night, but won't set it to sleep again, so the computer is burning electricity half the night.
If I just turn the computer off, it will be off when I wake.
For those that downgraded, log into your Microsoft account and see if it lists a windows 10 computer under devices. If it does I'm guessing you can always reinstall unless they revoke it.

My devices is recognized as having Windows 10, but that's obviously not guaranteed to be accurate since I can remove them from the listing there, and I doubt that that would actually delicense them. I may have to reinstall Windows 10 again on the laptop just to verify that it went through in the system settings.
What I really want is a tool that can look at my hardware, upload the hash to the license servers, and tell me whether my system has a Windows 10 license.
I may have just figured out a way to cut out some of Windows 10's bloatware without resorting to Powershell or having to fight against automatic reinstallations. Putting in a support question and crossing my fingers, since it could easily go either way.
Edit: Huh, I just discovered a request to restore the beta functionality of uploading bug reproductions to the Windows Feedback app, which would have legitimately required full access to system diagnostics in order to work. Faith in Microsoft restor...okay, no, I still dislike them for many reasons, but one of those reasons has been changed from anger at their maliciousness to slightly lesser disgust at their sloth. And anger at their hypothetical maliciousness if they're just using sloth as an excuse, but I can't know that for sure now.
So back to script talk, I think I almost have my Steam script working. I just need to find a way to have it automatically switch between my audio devices.
I found a program called SoundSwitch that lets me do this with a hotkey of my choice: F6 is what I decided to go with.
So my question is how to write that in the script. The simplest way would be to just have it point to F6 as a key command, but I have no idea how to do that.

Edit:
Unrelated, Windows 10 is making making non-anonymous requests to Microsoft servers for things like searches, even when Contara and telemetry et al are disabled, even when you're using a local account. The requests don't seem to include private data, but they aren't anonymous.
It's flat out unethical to send telemetry data when the user has explicitly disabled the feature.
