I thought we agreed that we're both beyond interventions.

Well, yeah, but it's just so tough to stand aside and do nothing...

But hey, you buy your 670s. I've probably spent as much or more on server shit and hard drives in the last couple of months. If anyone points it out to us, we'll just use the other as our excuse.

    Deal?

    Deal.

And hey, I only bought two. And I'm gonna sell off an old card. I promise.

    Maybe.

I have a rather uncommon problem. The wired connection available in my dorm is significantly worse than the wireless available
    DUuH0.png

So I'm thinking about getting a wireless card for my desktop with the following caveats.
    - It needs to support 5 GHz to use the wireless-n network here ( the 2.4GHz network is g only )
    - There needs to be decent linux drivers since that's where I spend most of my time working.

I don't really know anything about wireless adapters, does anyone have any suggestions for what I should be looking for?

Did some shopping today. Picked up a second GTX 670. Because, hey, when you're crazy, you might as well be full-crazy.

Also grabbed an ITX motherboard. Hopefully by the time that BitFenix Prodigy is available to order, I'll have all my parts together. So far I've got the motherboard, 8 gigs of RAM, a 2tb hard drive, a spare optical drive, and I'll probably put in either a 6950 or a 560 that I have laying around. I just need to pick up a PSU, a CPU (probably one of Microcenter's cheapass i5 deals), and a small SSD.

Man, watching you put together this thing is totally going to end with me spending way too much money on a 2nd small computer. I had grand designs for buying a cheap case and putting my old E8400/560 Ti in it, but now I'm thinking of going full hog i5/670 yet again.

It's going to be so much fun to put this thing together. I can't wait. Looking forward to gaming on a 46" screen, too. With better-than-console graphics, that is.

You have problems. You're on the Diablo loot-treadmill of PC-building experiences. I feel like we should have some kind of intervention.

I guess I should go through my Steam games. There's only a limited number of games I can think of on there I'd even being willing to play on a game-pad, but if I find enough, or get a real desire to get my emulator on, maybe I'll have to put together a badder HTPC then I was first planning on.

As for the Prodigy, as interesting as it is, Anandtech reviewed it and noted that it can be kind of a pain in the ass to build in, and that you have to be very careful about the PSU you use, because if it's more than 140mm long (I believe that's the number they mentioned) and modular, you may or may not be able to get it to fit in the allotted area.

The mobo is mounted face up so its always going to be a PITA to build in a case that doesn't have a removable top. Its a ITX case so cable management and routing again will be a PITA.

As for the PSU thing so far all the euro guys that have gotten their hands on one haven't had a complaint with the usual brands of PSUs fitting.

That's great, but brand is basically immaterial, the issue is length, and then modular connectors creating fitment issues.

My friend wants help building a rig for heavy Maya and Photoshop about 1k budget.

Thinking Asus Z77, i7 and a 7870, We'll sit down and figure out the case, psu and such... should he get 16g of RAM or is 8 enough? Also anyone have a better suggestion for those core parts? Also, I'm suggesting AMD over NVIDIA for the computing power that I've seen the reviews are better than the two newest GTX cards, is this wise?

Any thoughts on the parts/graphics card?

I'm quoting the above wish list as a viable option, but I'm throwing this in for forum review.

What I've selected here has a bundle offer that gets an extra $30 off that's not listed there. So the total with the case (looks like one that I can paint up real well, I think?) and me using my GTX 560 until an upgrade there is affordable and needed would be $590.95 plus shipping, assuming going through Newegg all the way at least for now.

Is there a reason why I would absolutely not want to do either one of these builds? Thanks folks!

Basically any SATA cables will do fine. You probably got a baggie full of them with your motherboard. It might have even come with some hard drive screws for your drive bays. Although, I prefer to use Velcro for attaching SSDs.

I probably tossed out anything that came with this when I got it a year ago. It was a pre built machine and i'm just upgrading bits and pieces.

Are there any special sorts of screws I need to mount a regular HD? The velcro is a good idea for the SSD as it doesn't matter what way it sits right?

    CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k

    GPU: Nvidia GTX 670

    Power Supply: NZXT Hale 750W

    Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4

    Ram: G.Skill Ripjaw 8GB (4GBx2)

Hard Drive: 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3

    Case: NZXT Gama Classic Series

    DVD Drive: Lite-On CD/DVD Burner

Os: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I'm going to be using this for 3D animation as well as heavy gaming. I'm planning on upgrading the Ram and maybe dropping a SSD into it in a couple of paychecks.

The 750watt PSU is a bit overkill on your build as listed, unless you're leaving some headroom for adding a second video card down the road. In which case, it's spot-on. Otherwise, everything looks pretty good to me.

It'd be fine. SLI support just means that you CAN pair it up with a second (and a third...) card for better performance. A 500watt PSU is fine for a 670. I think it would work fine for a 680 as well, but you could always up it to a 550/600watt PSU to be on the safe side. Then up that by about another 250-ish watts if you plan to add a second card.

All things considered, though, the 670 represents a much better performance for price ratio than the 680. It's within just a few FPS of the 680 on pretty much every benchmark I've seen, and it's roughly $100 cheaper.

My dad lost everything on his old Dell when it bit the dust in an electrical storm last fall. He now has a new machine, but he charged me with the task of getting him a good external hard drive, and I have been putting it off hoping for prices to finally recede, like the Thai flood waters, from their terrifying high points.

Anybody have any cautions about this? The European power cord is kind of odd, but I don't see any problem with it as the adapter is included, and Samsung is apparently still a pretty good storage manufacturer in spite of being bought out by Seagate from what I've heard.

I just bought the same external HDD. I'm of the general opinion that any HDD that works is a good HDD, and Seagate does that fairly well (despite a serious previous firmware fuckup, admittedly).

I've never actually owned a Seagate drive, and I don't know how exactly the Samsung-Seagate deal is structured, so I don't know if the current Samsung drives are Seagate-built drives that correspond to Samsung designs or whatever, so I can't really comment on how that deal affects quality. Seagate makes a very good 5900 RPM 2TB drive that I'd love to have a few of, so I have little reason to believe that Seagate would be any less reliable as a rule than a 2TB WD EARS, aside from anecdotally.

Well, I'm ready to pull the trigger on this order.

The final build will be the following(things with links are what are being purchased new):
Case - Rosewell Challenger Mid ATX
    Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
    CPU - Intel i5 3570K
GPU - salvaged nVidia GTX 560
    PSU - OCZ ModXStream 600W
    RAM - GeIL Black Dragon 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1333
HD - salvaged 128GB SSD and salvaged whatever else for data (I have lots of hard drives haha)
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium, and probably Windows 8 Preview as it's been working pretty good for me lately

Do I want to get any other cooling options, or is the stock going to be sufficient for not overclocking immediately?

Am I crazy and forgetting some cable or other small thing that will drive me crazy when it all comes and can't make it work until I order more things?
