I dunno about the rest of you, but I buy a few books that no one else seems to know or care about. This makes me very sad because you're all missing out on some good stuff. So consider this thread a kind of reverse recommendation thread. Instead of someone asking for something good to read, we shall all DEMAND that everyone else stop acting like heathens and go read these under appreciated books.
Oh, and a hint: if you actually see the book listed on more than a few people's weekly buy lists, I don't think it counts for this thread.
So I'll start. Why the hell aren't you guys reading Welcome to Tranquility, John Woo's 7 Brothers, and Walk In?
Welcome to Tranquility, you heathens, is about a small town where superheroes go to retire. The town has three generations of heroes that get along (or don't) to different degrees, and the first arc even has a murder mystery going. Gail Simone's writing on this has been great so far, the characters are all varied and interesting, and the mystery's pretty cool as it unravels. She makes the town feel real and live. Besides that, Neil Googe's pencils are so damn perfect for this story, and the kitschy little details really stand out. This book's got so much character and quirkiness, and even though serious things are afoot, it still feels really fun and decidely not gritty.
John Woo's 7 Brothers is a book for pretty much any action fan with a thing for the kind of mystical stuff that tends to come out of Hong Kong action films. There's magic, there's chopsocky fighting, people with cool powers, ancient evil, a walk through hell, and a motherfucking dragon. Oh, and Garth Ennis wrote (and kicked ass on) the story. The pencils are nice, but the colors and inks are excellent. I'd pretty much say it's an action movie in 5 issues, and it was great.
Finally, Walk In isn't action oriented at all. It's a quirky, almost drug addled story about a guy who "loses time", often travelling far and wide before he "wakes up". While in Russia, he learns that he has the power to see peoples dreams, fears, etc. He also thinks he's hallucinating, seeing strange things like floating fish and futuristic cities and octopi attached to peoples' heads. And that's just the beginning of the weirdness that he seems to be at the center of. Jeff Parker's on the story, by the way. This is just one of those out there, non-mainstream comics that people should be reading.
I demand that you all rectify these oversights and commence to purchasing these books, because they kick ass.
EDIT: Haha, I gave Ellis credit for 7 Brothers. It's actually Garth Ennis who wrote that.

Because I would be so down for that.
It's a quiet, subtle and delightlfully weird tale about a young man who finds himself trapped in an odd little villiage somewhere unspecified in England. Think Twin Peaks crossed with the Prisoner, complete with the convulted multi-character plot arcs Twin Peaks was famous for.
Drawn in beautiful grey pencils, written and published by one man, Gary Spencer Milledge, it has attracted critical acclaim from the likes of Warren Ellis, Brian Talbot, Dave Gibbons and even Alan Moore.
Sadly, nobody buys it. I recommend you do, as it's one of the few titles I still bother to buy regularly.
I want to know why the hell you aren't all reading Elephantmen?
It's basically Dark Angel, but with anthropomorphic pachyderms instead of Jessica Alba.
Anally.
I haven't read Planetary (I know, wth, right?), but I doubt it. Also, I said that Ellis wrote 7 Brothers, but it's actually Garth Ennis. I'm thinking that this will give you an idea of how this book will go. Let me just say this: it gets bloody.
Also, it was a 5 issue mini and the last issue just came out. If you can't find it at your comic shop, you can buy the singles directly from Virgin Comics on their website.
One of the characters has this kinda cool magic power. She'll say something like "Three seconds ago, I broke your arm, gouged out your right eye, then choked you to death with it", then that person will fall down dead with all of those injuries. It gets more fun later when she runs into someone who has the same power but can do it better.
I'm sorta disappointed that this was a mini. I'd have been happy buying it for the next year or so. As it is, though, it's a great mini.
Why the hell aren't you reading Action Philosophers?
Fren Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey do a great job of edumacating and entertaining simultaneously. Plato as a pro wrestler? yes please. The Hero's Journey as a board game? So awesome.
Action Philosophers: Read it or I'll kill your mom.
You forgot John Stuart Mill as Charlie Brown.
That sounds pretty gay, Keith.
It's that DC title that gets canceled every odd day of the week
also, 7 Brothers is great, had no idea it was a mini though.
I say GodLand--awesome Kirby-ish cosmic acid trip
Those of you who don't should be though.
Seroiously guys, what the hell.
It's like Daredevil, except her disability is a vagina instead of blindness.
While at it, you should also Read Jack of Fables.
It's actually a good spin-off, as opposed to the junk most are.
It's over now, but buy the trade assholes.
olol misogyny :P
I've really been meaning to get into Fables. Would this be something I could get my wife to read? Mind you, she's currently only into 4 comics: The Walking Dead, Y:The Last Man, Welcome to Tranquility, and Newuniversal. She also, surprisingly enough, liked Batman and the Monster Men, but she generally doesn't care anything about superhero comics. Oh, and she thought Supermarket was pretty good.
If you check out last months issue of Jack of Fables this is not shocking.
edit- when i posted this, i actually forgot that this already happened
Okay, it doesn't really fit because it ended a long time ago, but everyone should read it anyway.
I'd also recommend Iron Fist, but apparently everyone's already reading it anyway. Good work, people.
The best part of this is the tattoo she sports in JoF.

The DC universe sure has had some shitty presidents lately.
Thats the funny thing about the book, the first issue or two (including all of Battle for Bludhaven) made me hate the new team. Then Sam showed up and greatness ensued.

Duncan Roleau's Metal Men.
But seriously, fuck yes this is going to be great.
doubt it, that's a mini

It'll still be awesome

also i got batman year 100 recently, i hadn't heard of it before and it was suprisingly awesome. i was expecting it to be a bit of a cop out.
