Dust 514? That's that PS3 exclusive first person shooter that links into Eve somehow right? Yawn, right? Wrong, because CCP Games announced today that it's going to be free to play. It's launching this summer, I think we should team up and get our shoot on.
this piece of shit is directly responsible for leeching so much time and effort from CCP that it lead to the studio here in ATL getting all but shuttered, and all of the previous whitewolf staff being laid off, along with most of the world of darkness team in a frantic dying gasp from CCP to save itself.
so no.
fuck this game. it lead, by proxy, to many very good people loosing their jobs.
They haven't released the details yet but presumably yeah, it'll be a free digital download and there won't be any monthly fee. I'm waiting to see what the free to play hooks are, whether it's pay $1 for a new helmet color or pay $5 for a mega-robot suit that breaks the game.
Well fuck. This looks like something I'd really like, but I don't have a PS3, and I don't want to support a game whose development caused a lot of people to lose their jobs.

Wouldn't that cause even more people to lose their jobs though
If CCP's design philosophy wasn't "Release broken new content to try and grab new players, never bother fixing it because we're already working on more new content," I might've been interested in this.

I am hoping this can be mitigated by continuously electing Mittens as King of Space.

let's be fair, it's only partly because of this game that all those people lost their jobs. the EVE subscriber revolt over the fact that CCP tried charging $80 for a virtual monocle that nobody would ever see played a big part, too.
seriously, what genius decided that releasing a subscription-based MMOFPS on the PS3 was a good idea? let alone one that was heavily tied into a subscription-based MMO spreadsheet sim on a completely different platform?

don't forget that none of the people that actually made all of the horrible decisions lost their jobs or had their pay cut

actually that was pretty over-hyped as the dip only lasted a month or two and a healthy portion of subs came back. make no mistake, Eve online prints money. The problem came in with gross-mismanagement of the Dust and Eve-expansion teams.
Dust is done almost entirely by the asian studio, with little to no oversight. This resulted in multiple-month projects being scrapped. There is a reason that Dust has been hyped for years and years with nothing to show, and it isn't because the game is ground-breaking.
Eve on the otherhand is jealously lorded over by the iceland studio who only know how to do one thing, fight in space. They spent a years budget in trying to make humanoid figures walk in a platform and delivered the captains quarters, thats as far as they could go.
Meanwhile, CCP buys Whitewolf and begins WoD, which really was groundbreaking and unique. Problem is, it was the new kid, so it got scrapped, along with a LOT of outstanding employees.
Those that survived got moved to Eve and Dust. Not because Dust was going to be great, but because they've already spent so much, they couldn't just shoot it in the head as easily as WoD.

I really enjoy the environment of Eve, lots of risk all the time, fun looking stuff, lots of preparation. It is basically the world pvp I imagined when I read the original box for WoW
Yeah my sister lost her job at CCP, likely a result of this
so eff this

I don't really think dust is responsible for CCP's bad business decisions anymore than the dudes that got fired. The people who make Dust are every bit as deserving as the ones who make/made world of darkness. They're also probably more deserving than the ones who make Eve, but time will tell.
I'm skeptical that mittens can do anything positive as csm chair (or that anyone as csm chair can do anything positive, for that matter.) Of course, there's only so much that can be done about the fact that Eve is a great mmo with a kinda bad "target/action/rotate ability" game attached as an afterthought.

Now if only I had a PS3...
I mean, I don't have a PS3 (and won't buy it for this) but I like the initial concept.
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
If my limited and uninformed knowledge of the game development industry is anywhere close to accurate, they'll probably lose their jobs anyway.
The beauty of Eve is it has given us a great window into free market economies.
At least they added a Ship Spin counter back into EVE, that was something.
As for Dust, I do not hold high hopes for it, based on prior experience with CCP.
I am hoping this can be mitigated by continuously electing Mittens as King of Space.
If not, we should get some good laughs out of it.
