I also didn't feel like there were a lot of playstyles to try in the beta.
...because like 60% of the items were locked.
I'd say 60% is on the low side of how much was locked, since half the roads and almost all of the specialty, utility, service, transportation and government buildings were locked. What was available looked like a tiny fraction of what the full game will have (unless you believe some in this thread who would like to tell you that everything will be DLC because Evil).
This is EA we're talking about here. I'd rather expect the worst and then be pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong than expect the world and be disappointed.
I don't generally participate in betas anymore for that reason. Often they're touted as an unfinished product, but RARELY have I seen one change before launch in any meaningful way. I normally go media blackout on a game I really am looking forward to so I won't have my expectations soured. However, since The Sims and Spore, I wanted some 3rd party input and so far it's looking ok.

I'm not sure I agree with that...I think BF3 changed a ton between beta and release, and that was a really short window. Path of Exile has also incorporated a ton of changes from feedback between closed/open beta.
That being said, this beta really did feel more like a demo. Hour-long timer limit over a single weekend? Sketchy for sure. The tutorial even seemed more like a sales pitch, although I did learn from it, so who am I to complain. I'm probably one of the few people who was excited for this game all the way up until beta, then played the beta and found things to complain about, but will still buy the game.

In BF3's case (maybe Bad Company 2 also, come to think of it), the beta build was months out of date with their current one, and thus all the issues people brought up were completely irrelevant -- DICE claiming they were already changed or fixed -- and it made you ask what exactly where you beta testing for. And when the game came out and there was a bunch of balance problems and other issues, no one was exactly surprised.
Define "changed a ton." If you mean the maps were improved to eliminate exploits, then ok.
Anyway, I was looking at the page for SimCity on amazon. Not something I would normally do because I have origin, but I came across this bit about the first DLC, "SimCity Heroes and Villians" is the title. You can have crime waves and add a super hero HQ and evil villian lair. I think that sounds like a stupendous DLC for SimCity and does indeed take it right in line with The Sims style expansions that don't really change the core gameplay but add things to do with it.

Honestly, I would probably get that one depending on price, but I can see how it would be a definite no-no for a lot of super-serious city building types. One of my favorite moments of Simcity 2000 was when I had a space monster attack and Captain Hero came out to fight it (not really, but he flew around putting out fires at least). He then showed up for most of my city's disasters afterwards. Not the hero simcity deserves, but the hero simcity needs. He is... the purple and green knight.
RPS did a writeup of Simcity, from the screenshots and what little I read, it seems it's from the full version. I'll read it tomorrow morning, gotta sleep now!
Yup, read it as well. I will be getting it as well, I will admit that I am disappointed it's not what I wanted it to be, but I know I will enjoy what it is now.
Some people though, they want to boycott this, to SHOW EA THAT WE WON'T TAKE THIS SHIT!!!. And in the end, they are boycotting a good product. Just because it isn't what you wanted it means it is a bad product.

This happens pretty much all the time in video games. Look at pretty much any sequel to any beloved property ever, and you have your screeching harpies that insist they were "screwed" and the maker of that game "sold out to the man". Not because the game isn't good, but because it's not exactly what they wanted.
You don't boycott something because it's not what you wanted, you boycott because you think somebody is doing something super immoral.
On the other hand, if a product isn't what you wanted, you simply don't buy it. That's not "boycott," that's using your money without wearing your pants on your head.
Anyone who buys something they don't want just because it's "good" in some ways they clearly don't care about is an idiot.

Sadly that's how people think nowadays. Going to the Simcity fanpage on FB or any other mass-forum will just have droves of people whining and bitching about this, how EA is the devil corporation because somehow people are forced to buy their games and accept their terms I guess.
Yeah I'm not boycotting it, i'm just not buying it since I think it'll be shit for me. This doesn't reflect badly on anyone else who DOES buy it; more power to ya honestly. At least you're getting what you wanted. *grumble*wish I was getting what I wanted*grumble*
Yeah, I'm just not buying it because it turned out to be not the game I wanted. Maybe that counts as a boycott? I don't know.
That said, I do empathise with those skipping it purely due to the always-online DRM (and that plays a not insignificant part of why I'm not buying it in addition). The vitriol is a little much, but EA have taken some pretty bad steps with the title.
I busted out SimCity 4 last night for laughs. It crashed on me after an hour of play losing all my progress. It might be worth $60 to buy the new game for an auto-save feature.
Thats a problem with multi-core processors clashing with a game made when we only had single-cores.
You can set your SC4 to only use a single core, which afaik cuts down/eliminates that problem. I'm not sure how to do it but a quick look on google should get you the solution.
Do you have to do that every time you start the game?
Also, I too just picked up sc4 again, can anyone update me a bit on must have mods? I got the latest versions of the network addon mod and the real highway mod. I was wondering if there's something somewhere that increases the variety of buildings out there?

The network and highway mods are the only ones I use, as I felt they enhanced existing game systems, instead of trying to be arm-chair designers and rejigger the whole game.
I've been going with the idea of KISS so far, so all I have is the NAM with minimal installation options + Light rail and roundabouts, and a tram station. Love light rail though, even though it's finicky to place properly sometimes.
I don't really care for the high speed rail mod though or real highways, though. I wish someone would make a ground monorail/maglev mod that had connections to the stock monorail system.
It's amazing how much different the game gets on hard difficulty.
I was wondering something though, do I ever reach a point where I can get high density zones in smaller cities? I've been playing new york, and there are really only 2 full size lots on it. Alternatively, is there some way to combine zones through a region editor or something like that?

Nope, you have to flatten low/med densities to build high density. That makes it a constant choice, because flattening a whole block of low density single family houses to build high rises is not popular among your Sims.
I know that, but my high density zones at this point seem to just pop the normal medium density buildings, so I was assuming it was because I didn't have a big enough city to justify any bigger buildings.
Was watching a video, not sure if anyone saw/pointed this out. But the factories in the industrial zones all have names. I saw one called "Baby formula and Lead paint Co."
I used to name a lot of my factories in Sim City 2000. Although often I left them as default because "Industrial Thingamajig" was fucking hilarious then and is fucking hilarious now.
I have never played a Simcity game or even heard of Simcity before. I discovered this game 2 days ago. I am now counting down the minutes until this releases because it looks so damn fun. It'll also cause me to finally download Origin... Even those free games weren't enough lol

You gotta be careful. NAM, while brilliant, is known to cause huge crashes that no one really can do anything about besides avoid (putting two particular things next to each other). It's also the least stable mod out there, but the game does have issues, mostly of a graphical nature.
I recently jumped in, trying to finish my agricultural wing for my region--in retrospect, though, it might have been a stupid choice not to use the city for another seaport. Still, I wanted farmland surrounding my massive space center...
What about Sim Ant? Sim Farm? Sim Life? Sim Earth? Sim Isle? Sim Tower? Sim Copter? He knows about them, doesn't he?
Sim Ant was the best game. Hours of my life. Raiding red ant hives. Running from spiders. Nomming on caterpillars. Slowly invading the human's house. Digging out a new colony just right with a fresh queen.

I'm pretty sure that's the case in the USA and everywhere. At least it is if you preorder through Origin.
