So I have an HDTV capable of only 1080i. After checking into it, I've been told that the HD DVD player will play back HD DVDs in 1080i. (If I'm wrong, tell me)
I want to use the VGA cord for the 360, but my TV only has DVI. Would the adapter that comes with most current video cards work? I have about 3 of those sitting around.
Well, those adaptors allow you to plug a DVI video card into a VGA monitor, right?
And what we would be trying to do is plug VGA video into a DVI display.
I don't actually know if that works, and I don't really want to spend $40 on a VGA cable to find out. Bah. It would be nice to have DVD upscaling, though. I love my HD DVD player, but I have tons of DVDs as well.
Edit: For the record, the HD DVD player WILL play back HD DVDs in 720p or 1080i over VGA or Component. It will also play HD DVDs in 1080p over VGA with some 1080p TVs (I don't know which in particular).

The adapter will not convert the analog VGA signal into the digital one that DVI uses. It only works the other way, converting the digital DVI output into analog for the VGA plug.

Ah, and there's the answer I was hoping not to see. Damn.
Pacific Cable specifically mentions the 360 here, with an $18 VGA to DVI converter. Perhaps it has more of the necessary electronics:
Edit: I found another place where people were talking about the TV having a DVI-I or DVI-D port, and that's important because the 360 is only outputting analog signals. I don't actually know a thing about any of this, but it's something to keep in mind when you're researching I guess

Nope. It actually doesn't convert anything. DVI-I has pins for both the digital portion (DVI-D) and VGA (DVI-A). All the VGA adapter does is it tap into those VGA pins so that your video cards doesn't need to have two ports on the back. There are keyed positions for the DVI cables to only fit one type or the other (so your TV can demand digital). A digital-capable cable will be slotted to fit both DVI-I and DVI-D. The analog DVI-A cables are almost non-existant and really only exist for switchboxes.
I just want a little clarification here, even though it seems like a pretty simple questions.
Will HD DVDs output in 1080i or 720p over component using the 360 HD DVD drive? (The back of most HD DVD cases only mention 1080p)
Of course. Ever hear about Ana? The XBOX360's scaler chip? Also, scaling is part of the HD-DVD spec.
No, I wasn't familiar with that. This makes the decision to buy an HDDVD drive much easier, since I don't need any extra cables or other high fuckery.
I was just worried that since I was using component and didn't see 1080i on the back of HD DVD cases I'd be paying $200 to watch the same picture I was already getting.
It depends on if your TV supports DVI-D, DVI-A, or DVI-I.
This man speaks the truth there is more then one kind of DVI. All the adaptor does is change the pin-outs so it can fit another input. What matters is what signals the device accepts.
This should be in the manual.
FYI those shitty adapters that come with the card don't convert squat. The boxes that do are expensive and bulky.

I'm trying to sign up for live, and it's telling me that sign-up is currently unavailable.
How long do I have to wait?
