on Geraldo: I'd just like to point out that I don't think he meant for his comments regarding hoodies to be in the vein of "welp, he was asking for it"
the way I understood it was "look there are people out there who will look at a black dude in a hoodie and think different of him than they would a white dude in a hoodie, and that sucks, but that's the reality of life as a black person in america"

Comments like "the way she was dressed" and "walking through there after dark" aren't generally intended to defend the perpetrator either, but they do function to defer some of the blame in a general way that is harmful to how society works. A victim may be able to avoid certain situations based on probabilities and careful action, but things like rape and murder are almost always 100% within the agency of the perpetrator to commit or not commit. If you want to make honest risk assessments, I'm guessing "be awake at night" and "go outside" are way higher on the list than "wear a hoodie," but is it reasonable that society should put forward ideas like, "maybe you shouldn't be leaving the house at night if you're x gender or y race, sorry"?
Beyond that, Geraldo's statements are a ridiculously terrible approach to understanding the problems with race identity. In fact, I'd say comments like
