can I just say again how much I dislike the Superman crest being a Kryptonian symbol
Ehhh, I think it being something like the El family crest is better than Clark just putting that on his suit on his own, considering how he didn't really name himself Superman.
Phantom Stranger is a dick but for the greater good. Like giving Trigon's daughter back to him. Terrible? Yes. But it stopped Trigon from invading the world with an army of demons in search of his daughter. Then Trigon promises to return one day with his army and rule the world or something.
I mean a coin fell off the Stranger's necklace so I'm thinking this is all for the greater good.

Yeah, issue 1 made me interested to see where they're going with this - There is actually some meaning to the whole "he's Judas" thing, in that
his acts of redemption all involve betraying people for the greater good.
That's Doomsday? Blah, horribly generic design with a vaguely swastika symbol.
Yooouuuuu prefer the old one?..
Also, that's kind of the point. That "Doomsday" is a Superman designed by a bunch of marketers and whatnot. They made a Superman based on what they thought they wanted and what they thought was cool. You know, a Superman that's everything stupid idiots always say he should be. Edgy, dark, perfectly fine with killing, all of that stuff neckbeards love. And so they ended up with a monster. And a vaguely swastika-like symbol? You don't say. Really? Gosh, what an amazing oversight that is to give the evil Superman who conquered his own world and destroyed countless others a symbol that looks very vaguely like a symbol associated with another monster who was known for imposing his will upon others.
Oh, wait. Oh.
Oh.
The design is fine. It's "generic" in the sense that it perfectly fits the whole "dark, edgy Superman" vibe without being too derivative of any one thing. He's big and scary and imposing and impersonal, but! Despite the 90s-design-as-interpreted-through-a-2010s-design-lense look, it also looks iconic in a way. Infinitely moreso than the original. Which was awful. Just many times more awful than this one.
I guess it is a coincidence that both Snyder's are working on something called Man of Steel
Think about it this way - it's impossible for Synder to make a Superman adaption worse than Superman Returns.
Sucker Punch was the only movie I have ever seen that made me angry. Like, violently angry.
I've never seen Sucker Punch(heard it was crappy and decided not to bother).
I am intrigued, though, about what in it could cause such rage. Elaborate, please?
It was convoluted, pretentious, staggeringly misogynistic garbage that had the gall to pretend to be about female empowerment while constantly fetishizing and glamourizing the brutalization and objectification of the women in the story. Most of whom were even imaginary, which is a problem because most of what the movie tried to pass off as character development happened to and because of those completely imaginary characters, meaning that all of that development was purely imaginary so you never actually learn anything about any of the characters.
So the movie is a load of unfathomably stupid and inane nothing that someone attempted to liven up with a healthy dose of nauseating sexism.
From my summary of Sucker-Punch on Flixster back when it came out:
Truly, ticket-buying audiences are the ones getting sucker punched. I felt immeasurably dumber leaving the theater after seeing this, both for paying $9 for the privilege and for having been subjected to its sheer IQ-draining stupidity.
Deep story and characterization were obviously never Job #1 in a movie like this, but in a good action movie the "plot" must at very least stay out of the way. Sucker Punch's plot does not stay out of the way. Sucker Punch's plot is a series of nonsensical inanities which, in their wake, leave one too baffled and annoyed to enjoy the action sequences which they break up.
Zack Snyder has 300 and Watchmen on his resume, but in those films his only task was to execute the work of two brilliant graphic novelists (Frank Miller and Alan Moore, respectively) on film. Sucker Punch's writing credit is split between Snyder himself and one Steve Shibuya, whose IMDB page would lead one to believe, perhaps not-so-surprisingly, that he has no previous screenwriting experience whatsoever, and who has never worked in any capacity on any film more prominent than Killer Klowns From Outer Space.
The difference in quality is STRIKING, to say the least.
As for the cast: Jon Hamm makes what barely amounts to more than a cameo appearance. My guess is that he lost a bet, but I wouldn't be surprised if he still made more money than anybody else in the no-name cast, since the lion's share of the film's budget clearly went to CGI and special effects. Emily Browning, in the "starring" role, manages to spend the whole movie looking like a lobotomy patient even before the story calls for her to actually become one. Vanessa Hudgens is here, I surmise, only because she's desperately trying to shed the last vestiges of her High School Musical good girl image. Or maybe it's just hard for people from High School Musical to find roles. I'm not sure. At least she's not actually doing porn yet.
But in the end, Sucker Punch is probably just one step above that. It has an 82 million dollar budget, but at its rotten, perverted heart it is a B-movie exploitation film. Some of its action set-pieces are undeniably impressive in their spectacle and scope, but they were crafted with an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink mentality that quickly leaves the audience numb. What's left over, the only thing one could really say that Sucker Punch is about, is scantily clad women in danger. It is offensively mindless titillation. The only suitable audience for this movie is 14-15 year old males with uninvolved parents who don't care if their sons grow up to be idiots who eat at Hooters five times a week. Avoid at all costs.
New cosmic ongoing series THRESHOLD from Giffen and Raney. Spins out of the GLNG Annual. Stars characters like the Omega Men, Blue Beetle (his series is ending), Star Hawkins, and the star is the new Green Lantern Giffen is introducing in the annual. A re-imagined Lady Styx is the villain. Larfleeze stars in back ups.
Cool. With the heavy GL slant, I guess I'll be picking it up.
I prefer the first design myself but they're both really incredibly cool. Jesus.
Because unlike the Greek pantheon, which has a very classical look associated with it, usually, the New Gods are already really far out there and they're kind of gods unto themselves, so there's no real reason why they'd change their look that way.
Or actually, they'd have a different reason. And just because you're a god doesn't mean you can't wear a cool jacket. Hm. Okay, I'm 100% on board now, though I think I still prefer that first design because it's just a bit more out there.

Yeah, that's Superboy kissing Rose. I think the New 52 suit sans-cape works for Superboy
that works for Superboy though, for sure
Rose Wilson, Deathstroke's daughter
she was Ravager pre-New 52, is part of The Ravagers in the New 52
they're bringing back Doomsday with a totally sweet new design for the New 52
so it is
Fuck Doomsday

New Gods' sport biker. That's a great, but simple update.

and Threshold sounds pretty neat even if it is a dumb title
It sounds like a sci-fi novel, and it doesn't have a superhero name in the title
"Dude, you should read Threshold!"
Something that actually said "hey this is a cosmic anthology book, yo" would have been better.
I used to think the jeans and t-shirt look would never work when Supes actually joined the League and whatnot
but uh
I dig that a whole bunch and kinda wish it was the default now
cannot wait for him to turn up in Wonder Woman!
and yeah, I agree, the jeans and t-shirt look does actually work for the league as well
Let Clark keep the oldschool look
It is terrific
Well, that's something I never really expected to hear about that character...
