The brief iStore blurb didn't really capture my attention, why is Galaxy on Fire 2 so fantastic?
I'm an old school fan of the space sim genre. Fond memories of Wing Commander and Privateer. Galaxy on Fire 2 is a great entry to the genre. Lots of options for ships and ship upgrades, open world, different methods of making money. It hits the high points. It also simplifies things, which is nice because I found X too complex to really enjoy.
The controls are good and it's really pretty. I got a solid 12 hours out of it and I can easily see myself doing it all over again in a few months.
I don't understand whats so ridiculous about TWEWY being $18. If I go to the DS version on amazon its $20 (or it would be if it were even in stock right now). I'm all for bitching about Final Fantasy Tactics costing more than the PSP version, and for Final Fantasy Dimensions costing the insulting amount that it does, but TWEWY sounds more than sane. I'm tempted to grab it when I get home personally.

It was talked about a lot last page... It's not so much the price itself in a vacuum, but that the price isn't in a vacuum. In an environment where the vast majority of games are free or under $5, when you port an already-made game over and then charge $20, it just looks like a cash grab.

This. They can't bitch about value and stubbornly stick to their guns, or they can accept an evolving video game market and suck it up to deal with a different ecosystem with different expectations. Like it or not, $10-$12 is the premium range for an iOS game. And an old port of a DS game probably doesn't qualify for that.
On top of that, a lack of a universal version is insulting for a game of that price.
Also, it's only $20 on the DS because it's out of print and moderately rare. If it were more widely in print, it'd be in $5 bargain bins at GameStop with ton of other 5 year old DS games.
if this is how you folks make art it's fucking depressing
Yeah, like I said before, there was a time when it could be had for $10 when it was being clearanced out. I know that isn't relevant now, but still.
Right. And look, it's like selling shit in China. If you're gonna sell a DVD in China, you've got to price it at the equivalent of like, $2 USD or it won't sell. Period. Sure, it might suck for content producers who are accustomed to a certain system and the pricing models they're used to, but hey, you can either bitch about that, or accept the fact that there are different pricing ecosystems out there and adapt so that you can actually make money. Because clutching those digital copies of TWEWY to your chest and ranting about how they have so much more value isn't going to make you any real money.
That said, I would actually be borderline tempted to buy TWEWY, even at 20 bucks, but the lack of a universal version absolutely kills any desire I had for it. I'll be damned if they're getting $40 from me, just so I can play it on both of my iOS devices.

Finally beat the Heist. Even with a walkthrough, that game was more annoying than anything. And then at the end, I'm treated to a poorly shot, poorly acted video that appears to be filmed outside the Apple Store near my old job.
I picked up Galaxy On Fire 2 HD the other day when it was 99c and I'm really not seeing what's so great about it. So far it seems like a subpar space sim with awful combat. Your hitbox is goddamn gigantic, making it nearly impossible to dodge enemy fire.
I'm not seeing Bastion anywhere in the app store. Are you sure you're not mixing it up with the Mac Store version?
EDIT: Nevermind, I guess it's coming later tonight. Not sure how well it will translate to virtual controls, but I'm curious to see how it turns out. $5 isn't a bad price for it either.
In any event, I'm more excited by this. I only ever played the first Phoenix Wright on the DS and had always meant to pick up the others. This seems much more convenient, not to mention the improved visuals.
That’s the sound of Double Fine bursting onto the mobile scene with Middle Manager of Justice!
That’s right. The superhero management game you’ve been waiting for is here! And it’s just the first title to be announced of an all new, three-game partnership with our pals at Dracogen Inc.
It’s going to be FREE to play on iOS and will be available soon on iTunes.
“Somewhere between GOOD and EVIL… Between ORDER and CHAOS… Between UPPER MANAGEMENT and the SENIOR STAFF… You’ll find the glue that holds it all together: The Middle Manager… of Justice!” said Kee Chi, the game’s creator, dramatically reading from the marketing text.
“Congratulations!” he continued, “You have been promoted to Middle Manager.. of Justice! You have been chosen to whip the latest branch of Justice Corp into shape! Train and manage your team of superheroes to thwart crime and save citizens around the city! Increase efficiency in your branch by building new facilities and upgrading the equipment! Could it be done without you? Yeah, probably, but it would be sloppy, costly, and demotivating!”
“Wow, a game about Superheroes AND middle management! That’s what I’ve always wanted!” said a soot-covered orphan we hadn’t noticed before hiding in the shadows. “But, surely, a penniless, adorable ragamuffin like myself could never afford an amazing game like that…” He looked despairingly at his iOS device.
“Sure you can,” said Kee, “It’s free!”
“Free? Well then…Looks like it’s HERO TIME!” the orphan declared with a sly wink. Then he kicked aside his crutch, wiped the coal streaks from his face, and stood tall to reveal that he was actually Steven Dengler of Dracogen Inc., stalwart ally of Double Fine Productions!
“All I ask is that you release it in Canada first, so I have a chance to get to the top of the Leaderboards,” added Steve, as he went back to watching that game where the ice skaters fight over the ashtray with sticks.
You guys, there is a new patch for Vroom! out today, which introduces non-motion-controls. Hit it up
-Added a new touch control system, tilt is no longer the default
-Zombies now only gib unless you hit them super hard (ragdoll otherwise)
-Shorter slowmo when you boost-kill a zombie
-Zombies wear blue now
-Slight performance optimisations
-Better cockpit view switch
-Some changes to truck handling
Never had a problem with freemium as a model, it's in execution that it can go wrong.
I'm the same way. For the most part, it means I get to play a lot of free games. I don't pay for in-game coins/gems, etc. If it takes me longer to play well then I get more gameplay out of it.
There was one game where I did buy "gems" not because I wanted to speed up my progress, but because I liked the game so much and it entertained me for so long that I wanted to support the developer/publisher. (that game was Tribez). I think I spent $5 or $6 on those and it was well worth it since I played that game way more than some $60 console games I won...
I've bought some IAPs for additional levels and stuff, too.
I bought all the teams in Hero Academy (totally worth it), other than that I've never made an IAP. I have no problem with freemium if it's done right.

Yeah, Tribez is fantastic. That and Dragonvale are getting a lot of time out of me.
I bought Rebuild, which is actually pretty cool. I wish it had more variety and more flexibility, though. It feels like every single game will be exactly the same with just a different layout.

Pretty good for a couple bucks, though.
You get to island 5 in Tribez yet? I got there maybe two weeks ago but I'm working on accumulating 10,000,000 coins so I can buy all the land expansions in islands 1-4 first... but I finished all the coral-related quests...
Downloading Tribez for iPad now, it looks fantastic! Is it extremely slow without microtransactions? It looks like a game I can get engrossed in for an hour or so, it would be a shame if it was all "Wait an hour while this thing builds".

I'm still on the first island in Tribez. :P I have the raft built, but I keep using the materials on building more stuff instead of going to the next island.
EDIT: It actually feels like you do more than in any other one of those 'touch and wait many hours' games. Once you get past the initial stage, you play it for about 3 - 5 minutes at a time, but there's more going on, so it feels like those 3 - 5 minutes are more productive.
My Dragonvale game crashed and now can't load anymore. If I've lost all the dragons I bred I am going to be a sad panda.
And, Spaffy, do you have an iPad 2 or 3? Because the battery on my 3 lasts for goddamn ever, even when I play Tribez.
I have an iPad 3 - and what I said wasn't hyperbole - even when plugged into the wall socket, my battery still drains! I had the same problem with CSR Racing.
Is it possible to buy blue crystals with gold? I need 70 crystals to expand and I haven't seen any way of obtaining more without paying real cash money.
