This is a new six minute video that features the player fighting a teleporting opponent, and then trying to fight a Big Daddy (the protectors of the little girls). It is fucking amazing!

Then here's another long video (15 minutes) from E3 last year, in case anyone missed it (a lot of people have seemed to).

A lot of that stuff looked pretty cool, but it doesnt look very well balanced. And by that, I mean that while there is obviously some depth to your interactions, its probably not going to be all that necessary to use it to succeed.

It was good, but... I don't know. Something about all the Bioshock vids just really irritates me. I think it's the girl, she's just too... Girly. Like they're rubbing it in, shouting "DO YOU SEE? IT'S A YOUNG GIRL! SCIENCE HAS CREATED FREAKS!".

If it was dealt out with a little more subtlety, with her being mute or something, and communicating through sign language, that would be far more disturbing and morally troubling for me. As it is, I just roll my eyes.

The guy exploding to teleport, though? Rad. And the weapons look hot.

I love the art, and the fight at the end was just awesome.

Irrational said, in case anyone hasn't heard, this week that the games going to launch August 21 in the US, and the 27th in Europe on both 360 and PC. I like it when big games hit in summer because usually not many do.

Look at the part where he's peering around the corner, watching the bad guy through the falling water.

    That's pretty sweet.

I like the sound effects too, the way the grenades whistle like old timey bombs.

Also, the pistol smokes after a shot. That's a nice touch.

Yeah and the image of the girl squirting that gun into her mouth. This game is looking very pedo.

Edit: Gun she jammed into that corpse's balls btw. What the fuck, irrational?

So for some reason it took me until about half way through the video to realize why the camera movments seemed sp absolutely bizarre to me. It then became painfully obvious to me how lacking my experience with console FPS games is and that I'm going to have upgrade my PC at some point to play this :p

Still looking like it's going to turn out as an awesome game.

Clearly, you would have to get a serious fucking bonus for killing the little girls, because killing that big daddy was on par with fighting a damned tank. He took incredible amounts of firepower to kill.

From what I remember from the E3 demo they're supposed to give you large amount of Adam (goop to upgrade yourself/equipment).

Personally I'll probably kill the first little girl I actually have a chance to because being evil is fun and what's more evil than killing a small child that is cowering in a corner? Of course then I'll feel horrible that I just killed a small child that was cowering in a corner and load a previous save.

Unless I can do something awesome with the Adam from killing her

*edit* I knew plasmid didn't sound right for the upgrade goo.

I believe in the E3 video, Levine says that getting so close to them will make them grunt and point their gun at you to warn you, and then they'll shoot you if you get closer.

And yeah, I liked it better when they were called Protectors (I think that was what they were called).

Are the aggressors still in the game? From early shots they looked somewhat like protectors, but I guess they just killed everything in sight or something.

I kinda like the sounds that the Big Daddies made. That metallic groan, the hollow clockwork breathing, and, of course, the heavy footsteps that alert you to the approaching danger of one of those bad boys.

Was the PC invincible, or is the game just really easy? The person behind the character sucked IMO.. though catching those grenades was a pretty cool thing to do.

The water effects? Awesome sauce. No. Fucking awesome puree.

The way the little girl scrambled when she saw you was done very well. She seemed to slip on the wet tile, and she moved the [bedframe?] that she backed into. Awesome.

I'm going to make love to myself now.

Typically in these kind of videos the player is made invincible so the action isn't cut off by the player dieing, and to also get the player to look around and use everything without fear of consequences.

I quite like the spongy thing, at first I thought he was squeezing it constantly to heal himself, but then he threw it at the Big Daddy, causing Mr Teleport to lash out at him. I can see those things become really useful.

This video would've been a lot more interesting without the annoying woman's voiceover detailing everything that's going to happen in the video beforehand.

Anyway. It looks good and all, especially graphically, but I'm still far from impressed with the AI, which frankly doesn't appear particularly more complex than that of, say, Duke Nukem 3D.

I'm also curious to what degree things in that video were scripted, and to what extent they were just spontaneous occurrences in the game (I'm thinking chiefly of the guy with the grenades).

Edit: As for the little girls (which aren't really little girls, only made to look that way, but anyhow), did it seem to anybody else that the animation for them was much more complex and realistic for them than for the other characters? I can't help thinking that's by design.

Am I the only person who doesn't find little girls in games and movies scary? It's like after 'The Ring' remake came out plenty of other games and movies have used them to try and scare the player/viewer. I just groaned when i saw that little girl running about, even though that hulking beomoth was protecting her, my first thoughs were 'Am I suppposed to be scared of you? I'm bigger than you'. No matter how scary (in this case, drinking blood and acting oblivious to her actions in an attempt to unnerve the player) they make a child in a game, they never scare me because I know I could just run up to them and punt them with a hard enough kick. I'm probably a terrible person for thinking that, but it just shows that evil little kids in games don't register anything more to me than another baddie I have to fight.

Alma in FEAR? Pfft? I had kung-fu, slow motion abilities and a shotgun. That little demonic kid in Prey? Pfft, once again, I'm bigger than them and had a shotgun.

On the topic of the actual game, looks real purdy but I really hope they have another system of health management instead of the usual 'take a million bullets and patch yourself up instantly with a health pack', games like this one look awesome with all their cool ideas, great looking characters, creepy atmospheres and so on, but too many of them fall into the standard FPS formula of health packs, ever increasing selction of guns that starts with a lousy pistol you will throw away halfway through the game, a shotgun type weapon, a machine-gun type weapon, a pretty origonal gun and finally your one-shot ultimate death weapon. Prey was the worst offender in this regard, awesome ideas, lots of oppertunity to make some kickass battles and situations thanks to the portals and anti-grav mechanics, but they simply bunged those ideas into a Half-life mould. Every weapon was near-enough the same as Half-Life's selection and it just felt very watered down with 'done' ideas.

I'm hoping for this the same thing I'm hoping for 'The Darkness'. I'v seen one, maybe two videos for each game, been intruiged by the new ideas and cool features, but hoped to almighty god they don't just throw in health packs, the standard weapon FPS selection and enemy roster we have all seen before in FPS games. Bioshock looks very cool right now, but I can't get excited until I play it for myself and find out if it is really a fantastically origonal and great game, or a game with cool ideas but with gameplay that has been done over and over again in every FPS since Half-Life.

I had a character called 'Bastard Bob' who's sole purpouse in life was to be the biggest bastard of all time. Incidentally, it was the most fun I'd ever had playing Fallout 2 until I slept with the casino owner's daughter, crotch punched and eye-crowbared my way past her angered father and his goons and now he is stuck at the top floor of the casino and is killed every time he tries to leave. During his reign he became a slaver and kidnapped the homeless to sell them, kicked an orphan in the crotch, slipped on some brass knuckles and punched another orphan in the face, knocking him out and killed the only person who was looking after the orphans. I even threw a grenade at a stand up comedian because he sucked. My one defining moment playing as Bastard Bob was wandering around the world and finally finding a place that sold heavy weaponry.

"Finally, some dynamite. Now where are those orphans?"

regarding weapons, i thought they were meant to be kind of modular, so you can upgrade and alter your current weapons (changing ammo types in SS2, for instance), rather than getting the next best thing. More like the right tool for the right job, than an ammo-hunt.

I have to say, though, that I'd feel a lot guiltier if she weren't carrying that big needle gun thing, which she sticks into corpses and drinks the stuff she extracts.

The video looks awesome, but if there's no (or minimal) HUD then I hope they at least let you use the weapon's sights (aiming down the barrel, ala Call of Cthulhu). I get the feeling you'll need to make your shots count, especially if you plan on taking down a lot of those things.

The AI does seem to be bare-bones at this point, which is fair considering much of whatever's down there probably wouldn't think like a human would anymore. Still, I hope the Big Daddy/protector thing isn't the only interaction between creatures, or the extent of their intelligent behavior.
