So, All-New X-Men #1......
It doesn't feel decompressed and was better than New Avengers #1 after Siege, and the art is lovely. Bendis does write Hank well and he doesn't come across as a smug jackass, his Bobby is fine and in line with how Carey would write him, but there is a sense he's glossing over stuff, recent stuff, to make what Cyclops is doing seem more damning than it really is, that fake sense of tension. Cyclops is also a lot less nuanced than he was under Gillen, especially compared to consequences. Like that panel Blank posted shows, he's now actively saying very Magneto things as opposed to where he was last week in just protecting a world that fears and hates mutants. He even drops a "my mutant name is Cyclops," which just felt all kinds of weird and really hit even an Ultimate Magneto vibe, because that kind of talk was never brought up before.
And really, the reasoning for the story kind of has a plot hole in it, but main story thrust below:
Cyclops is helping new mutants, but he's kicking the crap out of cops who are arresting or attempting to arrest them. One mutant can control time, the guy seems to have healing powers that can bring people back to life. And it seems, at least in the context of this issue, he's going to train them himself, as opposed to letting them go to Logan's school. This might change but Cyclops seems to carry it as training these mutants will pay off some debt in the guilt bank. And when he talks to the mutants he's nice and normal Cyclops, but for the camera and his actions he seems like a bad guy, so there's good balance there for the reader, not the average marvel joe though.
The X-Men are all upset about this because he's making mutants get a bad name (but they've always been seen as bad and scary), and that they can't really fight him without risking a mutant civil war which for some reason jumps to the conclusion half the mutants will die from, and Kitty is worried it will bring the government right to the steps of the school.......like it was before when you were just 200 mutants. So Hank, who seems to think he's done nothing to help mutants (Legacy Virus anyone?), wants to make up for it while he's going through a change he might not survive and goes back in time to get the young Cyclops and the others. And if he could do this, why not go back in time to stop Cyclops from fighting the Avengers or any other bigger points on the map to prevent near extinction. Argh time travel.
Bendis has certainly written a lot worse, but I think with Uncanny it might be better because by then he doesn't have to prop up Cyclops' team as the bad guys for the direction of this book and these cast of characters. One of Bendis' flaws is he can't write two sides fairly in a conflict and one always has to be the bad one (X-Men, Pro-Reg, Simon Williams), so hopefully when Uncanny starts he doesn't have to prop it up that way, and it will be like Dark or Mighty Avengers.
edit: And Gambit #5, no MI-13 in it, it's another of that BS bait and switch that Daken did with the Runaways, a last page reveal. So if you were thinking because of the Union Jack on the cover and the solicit it would be different, don't pick it up.
I really hope that they weren't drawing a slavery comparison with Cyclops as that would be rather tasteless. Plus he's got a team of attractive white people.
Did anybody else catch, between All New X and WatX this week:
Strong hints of impending doom for both Beast and Angel? Almost as if the writers are already planning to take them off the table to avoid having too many duplicates of too many X characters running around. Hell - for at least a little while we'll have 3 Beasts, 2 Angels, and 2 Icemen? And that's only because they just killed the AoA Iceman over in X-Force a few months back, or we would've had 3 of them running around too.
the 2nd of the two new recruits is not white, at least.
That is something I guess. I always find it amusing how a group consisting mainly of mutants who look like super models are preaching about standing up to oppression and persecution to mutants who have bodies made of mud or look like something out of Giger's nightmares.

I know, it's a bit too much going in the other direction that Cyclops has always been in, but I think it's just posturing for the cameras. He can't just write a strongly worded letter saying "don't F*** with us" like he did a few months ago.

I was wondering if Cyke was going that way myself. Give humans someone to hate while Wolverine and Havok look good for the cameras. His comments when not on camera seemed different.
I really hope Cable and X-Force gives Nathan a good reason for being around again, because his sacrifice in Second Coming was really moving and Loeb bringing him back for no reason besides the fact that "hey I created this guy and someone else killed him off, fuck that!" really robs that story of some of it's weight in retrospect.

Also, his press agent turned out to have been:
replaced by Sinister
...so his for-the-cameras speech is probably still a first draft.
Damn, what is with Marvel- all these amazing promo pics and previews, but the actual comic comics out, some Howard Chaykin level guy starts doing art after 6 issues?
Yeah I have no idea what you are talking about. WatXM has had pretty great art throughout its run. This last issue, which was 20, was the roughest but still nowhere near Chaykin.

It feels very much like it's own thing, and I like that fact.

Ruh-roh.

But that remains to be seen.

Also, his press agent turned out to have been:
'cause Azazel
I'm sure he wouldn't be brining Azazel back if he didn't have a good idea for him.
"Ride or Die" confirmed Dominic Toretto, as they took off to find the Dragon Balls in hopes of reviving their friend Sonic
Ya why would a pterodactyl need glasses?
which, you know, I am cool with since I think those two work great as a couple
Because he's Professor Karl Lycos aka Sauron.
