Games for a 9yo Girl

Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster.

I've got 2 kids - 8yo son, and 9yo girl. Providing good games for the boy has been a snap - between Minecraft, the Zelda series, Skylanders, and the Lego games, he is all covered.

Finding games for my daughter is a PITA. Her favorites are pet games where you can complete missions or puzzles and accessorize a pet or other cute creature. Bonus points if you can interact with other players online in some fashion. The challenge I'm running into is that most games of this type have a Zynga, pay to win type mentality, and I don't want her to a) run up a ginormous credit card bill buying pet hair ribbons, or b) have to come get me every single time she wants a new pet hair ribbon.

So what I'm looking for is a game (Wii, DS, Android, or PC) that is either free, pay once, or a heavily moderated MMO that involves cute animals.

Any suggestions?

Thanks much,

-matt

    Nintendogs?

I'm not sure how well moderated it is, but there's Hello Kitty Online. I'd also second Nintendogs + cats

    The Sims!

    Can't Sims have...ahem...relations?

Yeah, the Sims were my first thought, but I hadn't played the game before. My wife and I gave it a try for a couple hours and put the kibosh on it =). A cute animal version of the sims might do the trick though - Nintendogs looks like it might be a winner.

Free Realms is well made. It is an MMO where you can have a job, complete collections, decorate your home, complete simple dungeons, play mini games, dress up... etc.
It is made for children, and heavily moderated.
Your kids might enjoy playing together if you have 2 computers.

Some of the features are pay to play, but a lot of the game can be played for free.
If you wanted to pay monthly membership is $5.00 a month - which is a pretty good deal.

That looks like it might be a good replacement for Lego Universe. Thanks for the tip.

Gah. Sony Online though? Don't they rape kittens?

You may also try one of the Harvest Moon games. I've not really bought any for a while so unfortunately I can't really tell you which one is the current definite *best* one to get (definitely look into the many various versions, some do and some don't allow you to play as a female character, for example and some have more features than others) but they're generally fun games and they're quite harmless and have cute farm animals (though you don't dress them up.. unless they added that in some version I'm unaware of).

Have you tried having her play some of the games your son enjoys? Minecraft and Lego both have a broad appeal to all ages and genders. I'd hate to think they were dismissed out of hand for being to 'boyish' or whatever.

If you have, and i'm just being horribly PC then maybe try looking in the casual and family sections of Steam? Lots of cheap, colourful and (most importantly) not-too-complex games in there.

Harvest Moon DS Cute would be a great one. It's pretty cheap now, you play as a girl, you take care of animals and your crops, and you can get boys to like you (naturally, since in the games where you're a boy you get girls to like you). It's not patronizingly girly or anything, either, despite that description. Really solid game, and worth a shot since it's cheap to pick up. Nintendogs is also totally awesome if she likes dogs at all... uhh... there are also several pet games on the DS that aren't shovelware, don't remember which ones at the moment. I'll come back with some names for you soon.

I actually participated in the Hello Kitty Online beta (seriously), seems pretty well-moderated overall! I don't know how any of the stuff you can pay for is, but the free game was pretty solid, if maybe a little buggy (since it was beta). Didn't see any creepy people on there when I was playing, either... everybody was nice and helpful as far as I saw.

Have you looked at the MySims games for DS or Wii? It's like an anime version of the Sims, I think they made it more kid-friendly too.

Animal Crossing also in the same vein.

Sounds like she might be willing to try some Pokemans! Plenty of versions to choose from, Pokemon "talent show" and "beauty contest" mini-games, a TV show and movies to enjoy with the games, etc.

Some great suggestions in there, thanks very much folks.

Yeah, she has access to Minecraft, they both go to Lego club, etc. She just doesn't seem to enjoy it as much as her brother.

I'm mostly just trying to dampen down the overwhelmingly patronizing/consumerism focused stuff that you find on gamesforgirls.com and the like.

Super Princess Peach might be a bit above her skill level, depending on how many platformers she has played before.

She might like the style of game, but needs the female character to show her that it's also for girls.

Kirby's Epic Yarn is basically the most adorable thing ever, and there's a semi-Animal Crossing-esque ability to decorate apartments in order to unlock minigames.

Endless Ocean isn't especially cutesy, but it's all exploration-based and you can take pictures of animals, run an aquarium, collect treasure, outfit your main character, etc. It's pretty much a solo game though.

I've heard that Style Savvy for the DS has some surprisingly decent business sim elements.

Scribblenauts (DS) if she likes puzzles...should be cheap now, too!

Wait, has nobody really mentioned Animal Crossing? Animal Crossing! If she loves cute virtual animals and customizing things, Animal Crossing is the best.

Endless Ocean is great, too. I recommend the second one, Endless Ocean: Blue World. There are a TON of things to do in it, the graphics are gorgeous, and you can tame a bunch of different dolphin species and teach them tricks.

As for Harvest Moon, as well as DS Cute the best choices this gen are Tale of Two Towns for DS or Animal Parade for Wii.

There's also a new Pokepark Wii game out in which it looks like you run around exploring, solving puzzles, playing some minigames, and making friends with Pokemon.

Free Realms is a pretty good community for kids, but one thing that will probably annoy you is that just about everything to do with pets in that game is monetized.

Want to find me on a gaming service? I'm SwashbucklerXX everywhere.

Great suggestion - I doubt it's that hard it was basically my son's first platformer. It's stupidly expensive now for some reason though.

I second Pokemon too - super fun and has a ton of strategy.

I was going to suggest this. My girlfriend has a cousin with similar tastes and she loved both this and the other Kirby game that came out on the Wii. Epic Yarn definitely got more play though, because it's adorable. Bonus points because both of them are decently fun in their own right and can be played cooperatively with her brother or you (or I assume mom).
