The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Shadowbane. It's got the most incredible endgame ever, as well as a real political/war system. Only prob is dated graphics and a non-newbie friendly interface.
There used to be a megathread on just this subject, but I failed to find it. Maybe someone else can get the search on this site to do something useful. I sure can't.

It seems to have strong Ultima influences. The client is tiny compared to most (a mere 14mb), and the registration process only takes a few minutes. Definitely worth a shot.
I play ALOT of Conquer Online. It's super addictive. However, there are a lot of changes being made to the game currently that are pissing off alot of the old players.
If you want to try it out, I'll hook you up with some plvling and a guild. Server: SnowWhite, Whisper: Serphimera
You get what you pay for. The closest to 'good' is Guild Wars, but there are many arguments that it isn't really an MMO, more large chatrooms with instanced group runs outside of the cities.
The one thing good I can say about it is it keeps actual money influence of the game to a minimum despite relying on cash purchases for all its income, so you truly are never overmatched by someone that will actually spend real money on this.
The thing about Maplestory is that your character always has room to grow, and the striation of the level groups is beautiful: there will always be people under you that you can impress and there will always be people over you that you can anticipate. The leveling is a grind if you can't get a good party (it can go fast if you know what you're doing) but the admirable, addictive thing about it is the economy. People can get so rich they can afford to throw money around and away that would take care of a lesser character for 20 levels, and they can afford to get in the risky market big leagues, gambling against the system to blow their entire cash reserves without bending an eye. Because of NPCs inflation is never a problem, and it's interesting to see an economy run entirely by players without help from the game. With this game, you can have a taste of what it feels to be truly rich. That is,
if you won't pay for Eve Online.
Cons: Hackers abound that you can care to report (the GMs just banned about a thousand recently; they do that kind of thing with major patches and especially changes in the cash purchase mechanism, like Target cards). I like to make it a kind of side quest.
In conclusion, it's not something you pick up and get deathly tired of after a while, but something you play, retire for a year, and play again as if you've never left off. Requires little skill, but continually rewards your sense of progress.
Other pros:
Holiday themed quests, gameplay updates aren't too sparse, each person can have 3 characters per server, which is like 21 now, lots of monsters that make you appreciate your level
Other cons:
Shallow gameplay and mechanic, bad music, bad controls if you don't have joy2key

Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

I've played Guild Wars for well over a year now, and for the most part it's pretty good. (The expansion games to the original have been disappointing IMO)
Of the MMO's I've tried, it's the only one that really stuck with me... I think you can get the original game for pretty cheap from online vendors now, and there's no monthly fees.

EVE-Online has a free two-week trial, if that counts. Why we fight.

May be a bit outdated though.
It's in G&T because it was made before the MMOE! forum.

This one is newer, although it is less organised.

Scions of Fate
Kind of neat, it's a "casual MMOG" with an Asian setting. Pretty bland but a fun distraction for a few days.
MU Online
It's like Diablo. But it's not very good.

And anythingelse I would like to mention Rappelz and Scions of fate
It's good.
It went free a little over a year ago.
