Laptop being funky
DemonStaceyTTODewback's DaughterIn love with the TaySwayRegistered Userregular
Alright so my brand new laptop has some weird quirks.
First of all if I'm surfing the internet and then it goes into sleep mode, upon waking it up I am unable to interact with the web page for extremely long amounts of time. like sometimes over 1 minute. I can open up a new instance of FF onto my Google homepage but the old one will be unable to be used still. What could be causing this? It's built for gaming so I know it's not a slow computer by any means.
Secondly, sometimes certain programs just don't like to open up. If I have utorrent (used for completely legal things) open in the tray I can click on the icon and... nothing happens. I can click on the desktop shortcut and... nothing happens. If I mouse over the tray icon I can see that it is indeed working I just can't pull it up. I even restarted it last night and had the same issue. I then tried another shortcut and had the same thing happen. I can still open my folders and say, watch a video however.
The first one sounds like Firefox being a piece of shit like Firefox often is, but I dunno.
What programs don't open? Is it just uTorrent? It sounds like this might also be a program specific bug.
Well I also tried clicking on Privoxy but that didn't seem to work either (again, even though it was currently running)... I don't have another programs on my desktop so that's where the exploration of that ended.

Could you perhaps also tell us what brand of laptop it is? Maybe it's a problem with your specific laptop.
Being a user of both of those programs and owner of a Sony VAIO laptop, I can tell you two things. A) When I come out of sleep mode and Firefox doesn't work right away, it's only because my wireless is reconnecting, NOT because I can't do anything with it. I can try to reach pages while my wireless is still restarting, and it'll just tell me it couldn't connect (I'm guessing it won't let you do this at all from what you described). The instant my wireless is back (after a couple seconds) and Skype, et al. reconnect, Firefox works exactly as it should. uTorrent (which, same as you, I use legally for stuff from indie developers or musicians) has never had any issues after coming out of sleep mode on my machine; it pops up just fine. Considering this, and the fact that this laptop is brand-new, there are four options I can think of here: your laptop has some sort of hardware/software problem it shouldn't and should be replaced by the manufacturer; your laptop is lame and hates sleep mode, which may be an unsolvable problem; your programs have problems with sleep mode and your laptop specifically, which... probably you can't do much about; or you still have a bunch of bloated crapware installed on that laptop that you should've uninstalled right after you've got it, since laptop manufacturers love to do that. If it's that last bit, I've used PC Decrapifier to good effect on my mom's computer (it lets you choose programs to get rid of, primarily ones nobody wants, which should hopefully improve performance on the machine even if it won't fix the problem). You can then clean up everything that was left over (and any temp files you have kicking around) by using CCleaner, which I personally run every couple of weeks to free up space on my machine and keep things running smoothly.
Beyond that, I don't think I can personally get a good read on what the problem might be from the info you've given thus far. The only other thing I can suggest is going into the BIOS before you get into Windows (hitting F2 should work) and seeing if you can change which sleep state your computer uses (as there are in fact multiple ones), but that may not be an option in your BIOS (mine has only a few options, most of which don't do much). At any rate, Microsoft has an article about sleep and hibernation that you might find a bit helpful.

Thanks for all of that Essee! And you know... I have been lazy and not uninstalled all the bloatware yet. Also, my luck, everything decided to work perfectly when I was home last night so I couldn't test it out. Well except utorrent. But I closed that via the task manager and when I re-opened it everything was fine.
Do you use an external monitor at all? The second issue sounds like you might have left the program on a different part of the extended desktop and windows is remembering where you left it, even though there is now no monitor there

Oh... wow... yea... I run it attached to my TV. I FEEL SO SILLY.

Ohhh, yup, there's some information that might have helped before. I get that you might not have thought about it interfering though! :P Well, so long as the problem with opening programs doesn't come back again, maybe you're golden? That would be excellent.

Yea I totally didn't think about it... but I should have because I got confused by this once in the past when I had my desktop hooked up to my PC. So odds are that's what it was. Oh well. Thank you guys!

Hmm I didn't check the task manager.... I'll see if it's even still doing it when I get home, if so I'll check.
Another good thing to test when I get home!
