My god, I think HBO is trying to set some kind of record for most pointleslly gratuitous sex in a single episode. Not even True Blood is this shameless.

I think I said "OH FUCK" out loud during this episode more than any in the past.
Especially at the very ending.
And yeah there was some srs late-night softcore porn going on. Titties bouncing, etc.
I love that this show is so full of stuff that it takes some time to process it all. I really can't focus on anything the rest of the night after seeing a new episode.
Well, my parents serve as my go to indicator for how average joe folk who haven't read the books but are watching the show are reacting are really confused by all the new characters, multiple kings, etc. They are still liking it, but apparently feel lost.
The biggest challenge this season is going to be distilling all the complicated goings on and numerous characters in such a way that new people to the series aren't scared off.
I think it wouldn't kill them to go easy on the perspective transitions. There's no reason to switch back and forth between King's Landing scenes and North of the Wall scenes, for example. They could just rearrange related scenes to group them together, at least within each episode. And they need to take extra special care with new perspectives like Stannis/Davos or Theon(who nobody knew last season). The audience needs time for those plotlines to sink in IMO.

I disagree. I think the pacing works better when they skip between locations, it gives a better sense of time passing between scenes.
It gives a better sense of passing time, but for people unfamiliar with the setting it apparently can get really confusing.

Yeah, but you could say the same thing at the beginning of last season. Probably more so, as EVERY character and setting there was brand new. People will find their footing in a couple of episodes I imagine.
The props people are awesome. I want Stannis' table and Balon's kraken.
It's much, much easier to list where the show fails to excel than where it is excellent. I loved Arya's outfit.
Things I liked this time around:
Melissandre's dress.
Ghost.
Dolorous Edd (I imagine I'll say this every episode he is in)
Pike. The design is excellent, and I loved the way the bridges bounce in the opening credits.
Salladhor and his obsession with Cersei's cunt.
Arya and Gendry (and Lem "Let's Yield" / Hot Pie. And Jaqen).
The creepy scene glimpse of the Other at the end.
Whoever does casting should be the most sought after casting agency in Hollywood. Damn near every role, from the major players to the minor one-scene characters are excellent.
I love Melisandre in the books that don't exist, and I think she's even better in the show.
Her sex scene is hot in a creepy sort of way, but I've got to wonder if a little bit more...foreplay would have been better when it came to Stannis and Melisandre's sex. And what I mean is this: only second episode and Melisandre is already fucking the king? The guy known far and wide as the most just, harshest, and possibly most celibate man in Westeros (now that Ned Stark is dead)?
Maybe this is unnecessary griping. I Melisandre is every way, regardless of how they make her relationship with Stannis.
Stannis is still a bitter, aging man who hates his wife and really wants an heir. He just saw what happened when his brother didn't have a true heir. IMO, they really nailed that scene--"A son?
Stannis didn't fuck her because he was turned on by her so much as he was turned on by the idea of having an heir.

I guess I just don't know enough yet to understand why people like Melisandre. I mean sure...yay tits, and all, but
To me she just seems like a manipulative bitch. Like Cersei only with wizard powers. And I'm just now realizing the show hasn't given me any real reason to think she's not genuinely interested in Stannis as opposed to his rightful throne. I guess I'm conditioned to believe everyone's lying, heh.

Seriously. Pretty much everyone is so damn good.
Roles that stood out in this episode:
Lord Varys. God damn, that actor nails every scene he's in. It's incredible.
Tyrion. Always amazing, so not surprising that he was amazing tonight. But he had a lot to work with this episode, and each of his scenes was spot-on.
Arya. How old is this actress? She's better than she has any right to be. And I normally hate child actors.
Really, like Tomanto said, it's hard to talk about what's working, since pretty much everything in this show is working.
I'll list my quibbles below, but really I'm splitting hairs here.
The different threads are moving at different paces. The council intrigue is speeding along, there were big developments in the Stark / Greyjoy plot, and the scenes with Ayra and the bastard son were great. But the Khaleesi story, the Baelish focus, and the north of the wall bits all feel like they're moving at halfspeed.
Samwell Tarly is a stupid character, and any scene he's in is worse for it. I understand "annoying" is almost the nature of the character, but it's a stupid character and his scenes are bad.
It is weird that Stannis got so much billing as being morally incorruptible and unyielding, only to see him yielding and corrupted in <10 minutes total screen time.
Anyways, those are quibbles. This show is awesome.
Also:
This show has to win the "most incestuous relationships per season" award. Viserys / Daenerys... Cersei / Jaime... Cersei / Random Lannister... Theon / Theon's sister. That averages to what, new incest every three episodes? Ridiculous.

To be fair to Theon
He didn't know, and she only allowed because she wanted him to feel like the idiot he is.
I also think her brother being a complete dick motivated her as well - as the main guy in her life, he was the only role model for maleness, then here comes Drogo, just a teens bit different
Drogo is like the essence of distilled man. It's not even night and day, it's like if there was another night that made night think it was day, Drogo would be a burning sun of manliness. Or something. I've been drinking. But seriously, muh-fuckin' Drogo.

What about "Cersei with wizard powers" is not awesome, exactly? Because that sounds awesome. Like, "sharks with friggin' laser beams" awesome.
And man, so many titties tonight. It was ridiculous. Left and right (as well as up and down, some back and forth). Making True Blood look like Matlock.
There weren't titties in Matlock, right? It's been a while.
And I want to have Peter Dinklage's man-babies.
Littlefinger was actually good tonight too. Cold blooded as all hell.
And man, anybody complaining about the CGI needs some fucking perspective goddamn. Go watch some original Star Trek for fuck's sake. Or even some Next Generation. CGI in this show is perfectly acceptable. It can't all be amazing.

When the content codes came up at the beginning I quipped that the one for nudity was missing and all made disappointed noises. And there was tons of it anyway.
I had it recorded on the DVR, and of course before the show there's this long commercial for watching it on Xbox 360 via HBOGO. So I said, sure, I'll try it. Turned off the DVR and turned on the XBox. First, it ignored my voice commands until I waved at the screen. Lame. Then, once I waved at the screen, it started tracking ghost hands all over the place, because the room was pretty dark. White hand jumping all over the place and trying to select stuff I don't want. Even after I said "XBox... Game of Thrones... Play" and the show started up, the buggy white hand is still jumping all over the screen, threatening to seriously piss me off.
The white noise/snow screen that HBO uses at the the start of all of it's shows really demonstrated the compression effects. It didn't look like old-school TV snow, it looked like one or two still images of old-school TV snow. Yeesh.
But no problem really, because within seconds, I'm back at the the 360 dashboard, being told that a problem was encountered and my selection cannot play at this time. I really want this to be the future of television, but it's not there yet. I went back to my DVR.
Spoken like somebody who doesn't watch Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad is good, but Dinklage is just killing it this season.
*"It" being used to describe the field of acting, not Breaking Bad. I don't believe he's doing anything to kill Breaking Bad and would be disheartened to find that he was.

I mean, Dinklage did win the best supporting actor emmy for Tyrion last year, and he may well do it again. He won't take away best actor from Breaking Bad or Mad Men I'm sure, and shouldn't, because he's not a lead actor in Game of Thrones, regardless of how awesome he is.
I understand it's his character and he's meant to elicit such a reaction, but even knowing that I still physically stood up out of my chair and was screaming at Sam. One damn rule and that fat ass can't even follow it.
The show/story is full of phenomenal characters, which does nothing but highlight how much I despise him getting screentime.
I was all like "right on!" then went to the thread and was like . With that thread closed maybe people will stop being geese and being upset if we talk about changes on stuff that already happened. But they won't. I've only read up to book 3, and don't want to go into the boom thread , as I'll get spoilers for books 4 and 5.
And all I really want to know is if I don't remember something, or if something was changed from the book for this episode, although even if it was, I don't see what their going for, but now I'll never know because the books don't exist , and if you go in the book thread you better have read all 5.

Shit, I completely forgot about Pyke, too. Theon, you lovable rogue. Raised by Starks, but obviously wishes he could be a Lannister.
Ghost looked awesome.
Christ compare this to V or Tera Nova or whatever, this show's CGI is fucking great, and they haven't even had a ton of episodes to get it right

Also, does anyone have a screenshot of the White Walkers from season 1? I have totally forgot how they look like
