On the HBOGo version of the episode with Interactive Features, there is a response to the Joff/Prostitute scene from DB Weiss acknowledging that, while its meant as a clear message for his Uncle, regardless of the political motivation behind it, it was also used to show the depth of his actual cruelty.
Edit: Regardless, I doubt my GF will remain watching the show if scenes like that continue. I have no issues with it, but I can see her point about how that's not entertaining to her.
Edit2: As a 2nd note, she reads Murder Mystery novels, so I wasn't exactly sure what the difference is between a scene like that and one from her books. "It just is" was her response. I dropped it after that.
Pretty sure everyone already knew Joffrey was a psycho.
From that time he tried to kill the Butcher's Boy and Arya.
and that time he ordered Ned's execution in front of his daughters.
and that time he ordered that singer to choose between his tongue or his fingers.
and that time he tried to drown Ser Dontos with wine.
and that time he ordered Sansa to be stripped and publicly beaten.

The Joffrey scene was partially there to make you go "no, he's not just showing off, he actually is disturbingly into this shit" and partially there to be the first in a long run of "Tyrion tries to be clever" scenes this season to go badly for Tyrion. Clever as he is, he underestimates Joffrey's sadism.

Yes, I really think this is the key here. Prior to the prostitute scene, it's true that we've already seen multiple instances of Joffrey doing terrible things. However, all of those could, for the most part, be chalked up to "He's a spoiled bratty teenager with too much power" or "He's just trying to display that he's the king and ultimately everyone has to do as he commands." Which in a way is almost understandable, as no king wants to be perceived as weak. Especially a boy king and a Lannister.
However, with this scene, we finally see that it's not just an act. Joffrey truly is a psychopath. I don't imagine we'll need many more scenes like this one, because now there is no doubt in anyone's mind that he is irrevocably too far gone for redemption.

LOL trained good then. This scene was put in for that specific point. If you didnt hate Joff by now the writers were not doing their job on the show. This scene was in place to make sure that happened.
The scene repulsed me as well. It's really dark stuff. But I feel like that's what they were going for, and they succeeded. There's nothing wrong with that. I mean, this is an HBO show... it kinda comes with the territory.
Was it strictly necessary? No, because we already knew Joffrey was a sick little shit. But if they're out to put an exclamation point on it, I don't see how that's a terrible thing. Beats watching 2 and a Half Men.
Everyone is justly pissed about the new Mountain -- he's got a kickass voice, though. One of the least important parts about the character, sure. But hey... silver lining?
Watch this. It's the godfather neckbeard himself speaking about the religions of the GoT setting and if you're into the worldbuilding and setting as much as I am it's really interesting stuff. No spoilers but a few random seconds from next episode is in there
I thought the nurse looked familiar (I was 50% certain she'd been in the BBC miniseries The Hour) - and it turns out the actress is the granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin. She's also the great-granddaughter of Eugene O'Neill... and the second cousin once removed of some person called Drunkfux, believe it or not. The things you learn on IMDB...

Sadly, this show lost my wife in the first few minutes of the first episode. The child snow zombie and the dead dire wolf and she was done.
Did you see that super weirdo dress and her staying calm in the storm of Peter Baelish's smiling verbal barbs?
That dress made her look like she was getting eaten by a giant fish. Foreshadowing?
My favorite description of it so far was that she looked like an embroidered fruit bowl

It's also going to probably set up a Tyrion vs Joffrey dynamic for the rest of the season, since Cersei doesn't have much power base left now. Up until now Joffrey's just been a problem to be managed, now Tyrion - and really the audience as well - are realizing that he's actually an opponent.

Probably for the best then, considering this season's probably not getting any cheerier

next episode: boxing match between Catelyn and Margaery.
Marg's younger and has reach, but I'm putting my money down on Cat's northern chin and experience.

Jon's storyline totally needed a "We're walking in the snow" scene, with Sam complaining about having to walk and it being cold and Dolorous Edd making some sardonic remark.

I originally read this as "2 and a Half-Man", thinking you had made some clever Tyrion pun. :?
Surely someone here is skilled enough to Photoshop something potentially glorious?
No Jon Snow despite ending him on a cliffhanger last episode.
"Self-righteous annoying field nurse" only spoke the truth. I liked her a lot (and so did Rob it seemed)
She was annoying for being all pissy at Rob for going to war. WTF is he supposed to do? Let the Lannisters usurp the kingdom? Tell his men not to hurt anyone in the next battle?
Maybe he should just send Cersei and Joffrey a sternly-worded letter.
It makes a difference when Joffrey is the kind of king who literally kills people just for fun.
Maybe, but they didn't really know about that when they started the war. Robb just wants his sisters back and some good ol' fashioned revengin'. To everyone else, yeah, war might seem to be a bit much.

I just hope that whatever mad shit is about to go down people who have used their dark sorcery to know what's coming will be recording the reactions of the unspoiled.
One of my favorite videos on the internet is that guy reacting to Episode 9 last season.

I am continually amazed as I check these threads from time to time at how sensitive, prudish, and whiny some people are.
The scene with the whores was probably one of the best this season so far. Yes we knew Joffrey was a "cunt" before, but this scene showed that he is a sadist (something only hinted at before). He gets off on that type of shit, these things he does are as much about fulfilling his sick desire for violence as they are for asserting his authority. At least that's the way I read that scene, and the acting was sublime. Really the actor playing Joffrey should get some sort of award along with Tyrion because he just plays his role so well.
Also a very beautiful episode surprisingly; the meeting of Renly and Stannis (ornate and chivalric vs. bare and feudal respectively), the glittering Rome of the desert (Quarth) are some scenes that stood out. Arya's scenes were a bit drawn out but still neat because we got to see a brilliantly creative (and sadistic) torture method.
Just hope HBO sticks to its guns instead of listening to detractors, and use violence/sexual scenes when the story calls for them because this episode was great.

The rat thing was not so much creative as well-researched.
It's an oldschool torture method originally developed and perfected by the Dutch.
Never ever google some of the methods of torture that humanity has developed over the centuries. We are a sick species.
It makes a difference when Joffrey is the kind of king who literally kills people just for fun.
He doesn't kill random Lannister soldiers living hundreds of miles away from King's Landing for fun.
Neither does Robb Stark.
No, he's doing it for "honor". I'm sure the dead soldiers feel much better knowing that it was for a good cause :P
You're right. He shouldn't oppose an illegitimate king who's being an evil prick. Then when the inevitable overthrow happens in a few years and it's someone else we can get all smug at that guy for not lying down and taking it.

Unfortunately he made it clear in the last episode he has no idea what to do. Robb's like I'm gonna rescuer my family and kill those assholes!
Woman: Well what are you going to do afterward?
Robb: Uh I dunno, go home?
Woman: What about the kingdom? Whose going to rule?
Robb: Uhh...
Edit: Basically leave it in just as shitty or an even shittier condition.. Or I guess he planned on letting the Baratheon brothers duke it out for shits and giggles later?

How did snow end on a cliffhanger? Mormont told him to saddle his horse because they leave at dawn.
But then they zoomed in on the horse and he had shifty eyes! Bum Bum Bu-Bummmm!
