Disabling Office installation popups

Lately, my parents' work computer have been acting up, or rather, Office XP has. Everytime some Office-related code is activated, there'll be this neverending series of popups, first saying it's preparing to install, then collecting information, and then it just starts over. It never asks me for CDs or anything. The really annoying part is that it's not just when working inside the Office apps, but could be just the Windows search function passing through Word documents while looking for other files.

I guess the obvious solutions would be to
a) install the rest of the components on the discs, which I don't want to do since the computer has limited storage space, or
b) reinstall, which I haven't tried yet as I've figured this problem will just come back eventually anyway.

Anyone know how to disable this automatic installation thing?

I used to see this all the time on some school computers. Never had any clue what the hell it was actually trying to install.
