Geez, how long has it been since I've posted art? I don't even remember.
Anyways. Hi guys. My second-to-last quarter at SCAD is about to wrap up, so I figured I'd share all the crap I've been working on in Hand Lettering and Typography for Comics, my only sequential class this term (stupid me, waiting until the very end to fulfill all my art history elective requirements).
The name of the class is pretty self-explanatory, so yeah, here are all the projects I had to do, sans the final which I have yet to finish (it's due a week from Wednesday).
Project 1: Mixed-case and all-caps alphabets. I had to do two separate comics of at least three panels each giving an example of both sets. In a random moment of inspiration I decided to take all the dialogue from the MST3K episode "Pumaman." The only requirement was to have them in pencil, but I have plans to ink them eventually. Just haven't got around to it yet.
Mixed case:
All caps:
Project 2: Character-specific voices. Again, I had to do two separate comics, three panels each, this time giving an example of lettering tailored around a specific character's voice. These had to be fully inked.
Project 3: Image-As-Text. The idea behind this was to have the background, props, and other organic elements form the lettering, rather than relying on a standard typeface. My idea was to do a cover for Ademar where arrows have struck the brick wall, spelling out "The Chronicles of Ademar" in the resulting cracks. The end result was a little too hard to read, so I'll probably avoid doing this for an actual cover.
Oh yeah, and the characters of Ademar (Lily and Buckley seen here) are now humans instead of animals. That's why my Ademar site is listed as "under revision" in my sig. Yeah... more on that later.
Project 4: Text In Environment. We were given a list of different types of text to incorporate as background elements into two separate single-panel illustrations. I loved this one.
Project 5: Sound Effects. Complete one full page of comic art, and manage to squeeze in at least eight different sound effects of different types (onomatopoetic, repetitive, dopplar, etc.).
Our final project for the class requires us to create two separate title logos and use them in a cover page and splash page, while also incorporating a little of everything that we've used in our past projects so far. Yeah... a cumulative final. Good lord. O.o
I'll post the sketches and whatnot for it as soon as I reach that point. Until then, comments and critiques are definitely welcome.

These all look pretty solid, I wish i could ink as amazingly as you.
Love the 'Squeeka's in the onomatopoea page

So sad though...
My Portfolio Site
Thanks, I'll bring em back when I'm done.
Kewop: LOL, thanks. Be careful with them, they're fragile. ;-)
ND : Thanks for the critiques. I know the word-spacing in the first few comics was rather tight, which is something I still need to work on. Force of habit makes me write closer together (I have really tight handwriting most of the time), and I was able to get around it through my digital font with automatic spacing... but that's such a cheap fix for something I should correct on the rudimentary level first.
I also see what you mean about the inking on the second panel. Admittedly I didn't plan out the background elements as well as I should have (and it seems a bit odd for a robot to have curtains to begin with). Plus I think my hand was killing me at that point, since I did the last panel first when inking it, so I got a bit sloppy with the brush. I should learn to take a break more often. lol
I'll have some more stuff to share within the next week or so. I could post sketches and crap but I'd rather put up more refined work for critiques.

It's because of the leaf ticket and the dude being annoyed by the guy on his shoulders.
Well... that's why I like it
Thanks for the comments, guys. Here's half of my final project for Hand Lettering. I had to do a full-page comic cover/splash page using various elements, blah blah blah. I colored it for shits & giggles, and put in some digital text because it looked cleaner (the one I'm turning in for a grade is black & white with all hand-written text... I only went digital for presentation quality on the colored version).
For more of an explanation as to who this character is, start with this comic and read through the next three after it. Also, I decided to use the second half of my final for my latest P&C update, so I won't post it here since you can read it over there.
And yeah, the cover's totally fake. I don't plan on making this an actual comic anytime soon. I really don't know if Korgar could hold his own.

I kid, I kid.
The first two projects look smooth; print-quality as the way. Project 3 looks very forced. Like you came up with the cracks idea and had to make it work.
By ones in project 4 look stellar. There's a bit of a perspective issue with the movie names in the UFO one, but that's the only gripe. I love the Acorn Lift though, really nice piece.
Project 5 looks nice as well but the "stab" panel is very hard to read. Your viewer should be able to make out the word without referancing what's happening in the panel.
Oh, and I love Korgar. He is the greatest math teacher ever.
MT: Hehe, those are actual kittens on his desk. In the P&C comics you see that he keeps a huge mass of kittens in the front drawer. Why? ... he's Korgar, no one questions him.
And yeah, "Fat Guy" is in reference/tribute to my friend Dan, who was one of the ones who created Korgar five years ago here at SCAD. The character spawned from a simple typo on an advertisement for Kroger on the bulletin board at the dorms (misspelled "Korger") and well... the rest spawned from too much soda and not enough sleep. I'm only just now getting around to actually drawing him in my stuff.

If you were slouching in your seat trying not to be seen (tough to do if you're the poor bastard in the front row), would that make the perspective look like that?
Honestly, it didn't bother me at all until you pointed it out.
hahaha
Dear satan I wish for this or maybe some of this....oh and I'm a medium or a large.
The desk I admittedly fudged the perspective a bit, although this was on purpose, since looking at it head-on made it look flat and showing the top of the desk made the background too cluttered and busy (with all the kittens). There are times when bending perspective for such a minor detail is just as effective (and most of the time unnoticeable unless you really look for it).
