I think it is a choice you need to make on your own after considering your own personality and patience (or lack of) combined with your sense of adventure.

Can you deal with just reading a book, looking out the window as you roll by sights you might never see again and resting away the hours or do you need instant gratification and have no patience or sense of adventure? If the latter, then by all mean, take a plane. But if you have a sense of adventure and are not rushed by the world, need to be on your cellphone or texting, or on the internet 24/7, then take the traina nd see some of the beauty of our nation that many take for granted.

As for taking food on-board, so you would need to bring non-perishable items or foods that travel well, better than airplane food any day... plus they now sell Tuna in those plastic pouches, and you can get little single serving of mayo (if you use it) at many fast food places as well as mustard, ketchup, relish even; stock up before you go.... fruit travels well, so does bread, peanut butter & jelly.

Plus Trains do have lavatories; you can bring Wet Ones and wash your "smelly pits" with them until you arrive at your destination.

I have driven cross-country, flown the same and taken the train; to me the most enjoyable was the train, but then I have patience and a sense of adventure. I can't wait to take another train trip myself.

Think of it as a camping trip without the dirt, bugs and predators....
