Project X Zone - On the boats and on the planes, it's coming to not-Japan

Looks like Capcom and Namco are taking another kick at the Namco x Capcom can, and inviting Sega along for the ride.

30jphqp.jpg

The game is an SRPG for the 3DS, and screens indicate it will follow the Namco x Capcom formula, which itself is kind of a more action heavy, less strategic take on Banpresto's (who are now owned by Namco) Super Robot Wars games. Which are already pretty light on real strategy to begin with. These games do not follow the Tactics Ogre model of SRPGs, but are instead an excuse for fan-favourite characters to pull off spiffy looking special attacks against enemies that are pretty much damage sponges.

I'm sure most of you remember Namco x Capcom, at least in passing. It was a really neat idea, but was never localized. It was also not that great of a game, once you get past the pretty good sprite work. The actual gameplay was very repetitive. I played an import copy way back when it was released and even the few hours I put into it showed that it would not have lasting appeal. Everything about it just took so long, and the cool parts, where the player can actually press buttons and make shit happen, were too brief. A lot of SRPGs suffer from being way too slow, even SWR games can have that problem (but at least there are options to speed things up).

The game is not a sequel to Namco x Capcom, which is one of the reasons it's named Project X Zone and not Namco x Capcom x Sega. That means that the original characters created to be the main protagonists for Namco x Capcom won't be back (at least not as the main characters). Since there are no story details there's no way to tell who will lead this one, or if they'll make up some new characters to do the narrative heavy lifting. According to the Famitsu interview the game is 50% complete.

Haven't found any real details about the game's story yet, but the 3 companies have released their initial character rosters. This is the interesting part, because unlike Namco x Capcom, which was full up with characters from obscure and Japanese-only games and franchises, pretty much every character announced so far would be at least familiar to a Western audience. Makes localization seem a bit more likely?

Keep in mind that, like Namco x Capcom, most of the time each unit will be a combination of 2 characters.

Capcom. Are they still trolling fans? Or are they getting better? You decide. They've announced Ryu + Ken, Megaman X + Megaman Zero, Demitri (Darkstalkers, was in Namco x Capcom) + Dante (looks like DMC1 Dante), and Chris Redfield + Jill Valentine (from Revelations, so that's still large Chris, but at least Jill has her proper hair colour). Yeah, so the Jill most people like, but still no Megaman.

Namco. In Namco x Capcom there were a lot of obscure Namco characters from Tower of Druaga and a bunch of Japanese only games and Tales characters from games that never got localized. This time their initial roster looks like it would have a much wider appeal: Sanger Somvold (a SRW character that's actually been in a game released outside of Japan, and without his robot in normal combat), Jin + Xiaoyu (Tekken), KOS-MOS + T-elos (evil KOS-MOS), Yuri + Estel (Tales of Vesperia), and Kaito + Black Rose (./hack). No Soulcalibur characters yet, but otherwise a very reasonable starting lineup.

Sega is the new kid here, and you'd think they might have less characters to bring to the table in a more serious and action heavy game like this. I mean, Sonic would be pretty out of place. But still manage to bring characters that Western audiences can at least potentially be familiar with. Their roster: Akira + Pai (Virtua Fighter), Shinguji Sakurai + Ogami Ichiro (Sakura Wars, and without spirit armour), Kurt + Riela (Valkyria Chronicles), and Toma + Cyrille (Shining Forces EXA) along with Ulala from Space Channel 5.

There are magazine scans here and more Famitsu pics here.

The producers are Tatsuya Kitabayashi from Capcom, who has worked on a bunch of their stuff including some Megaman X games, was the producer for Megaman Legends 3 before it was cancelled, and worked on Steel Battalions, along with Yasushi Yamashita from Sega, and Kensuke Tsukanaka from Namco.

    Hohoho!

Fighting Vipers! Die Hard Arcade! And the lamest character from God Eater! Yippee.

Seems Banpresto is actually heading this one up? I guess more SRW, less Namco x Capcom. Fine by me.

Wasn't it Banpresto that worked on the Endless Frontier games? The sprite work looks identical to those.
If the gameplay is anything like the combo systems from them I'd be very happy. (The only really redeeming things from that series IMO, the sexual fanservice was wa~y too high).

Also a big fan of NxC, had a lot more fun with that game than most of the Super Robot series.

I'm just happy that X is in. And that I have a Japanese 3DS.

Oh, so now that image makes sense. I was confused when I first saw it because I was like what the heck do chromatids have to do with video game characters and shit? Oh, they're Xs. I getcha now.

Putting Banpresto in charge here does make the most sense. I mean, SRW and that other crossover stuff they've done on the psp. It's their bread and butter now. I don't think they worked on Namco x Capcom (supposed to be Monolith, but I don't think Namco owns them anymore).

Like I said, the actual fights in Namco x Capcom were fine, it was everything else about the game that sucked so hard. And this game being on a portable system should help with that as well: not having to sit around staring at the tv for 5 minutes between every actual player action might be more tolerable if you're waiting anyway.

WAITWAITWAIT. . . Leanne is in this?!?! That changes everything! Resonance of Fate is one of my favorite RPGs from this generation; it's nice to see Sega spreading the RoF love. Yuri and Estelle as part of Team Namco is great too (shame Rita isn't in there for the sake of BLAH BLAH BLAH KABOOOM!! and the "Ristelle" duo).

Capcom, though. . . still giving Classic Megs the finger. X and Zero are so played out at this point. Mega Man and Proto Man would've been outstanding.

Come on, I'll give you Zero, but X hasn't appeared in a game since X8. That's 8 years. 8. YEARS.

At least Rock and Blues had MM9 and MM10!!

Looks to definitely be building on the Endless Frontier system, good stuff! The music on the home page is pretty exciting too in a Super Robot kind of way.

Worthwhile for official sprites of characters never seen in sprite form, if nothing else.

It's a bit weird to see Ulala and Opa-Opa in the same game.

Man, that trailer... I won't lie, I fangasmed when I saw the gameplay of X and Zero in their X4 incarnations, but those animations... Those fucking animations... Why on earth do they look so goddamn cheap? Simple cut-ins would've been loads better.

That's how Banpresto rolls. At least on these handhelds. I don't think they'd be giving the game a full ps3-quality SRW look. Though that would be kind of neat.

    Six more characters officially confirmed.

Capcom is adding Hsien-Ko and Frank West.

Namco is adding Alisa and Soma from God Eater.

Sega is adding Leanne and Zephyr from Resonance of Fate.

Loving the fact that Rei Rei and Frank West are partnered up, along with Resonance of Fate characters too. Good additions :D
Surprising that the first two Darkstalkers characters didn't include Morgan or Felicia.

Hsien-Ko/Lei-Leie is pretty damn popular too iirc. I think they caught up on the fact that people are pretty sick of seeing Morrigan and Felicia all the time by now(I'm talking out of my ass here, but I've seen lots of people with these sentiments).

That image makes me want a God Eater 2. Preferably with more badass anime-god slaying, and a better AI on the companions.

That game was really damn fun, and the story was enjoyable when they focused on the grimness of the setting (The fake outs with so many unique looking characters getting obliterated out of nowhere was a great twist to keep you wondering who was going to live early on.) and not on kawaii anime crap.

Also, why Soma of all people? Dude's like the poster-poy for emo anime heroes that communicate by going "...". I guess they need someone to counter Dante's badass extroverted nature.

Should have gone with that guy who was your character's mentor/team leader. I forget his name, but he was the one
who went out smoking a cigarette and facing down two of those ridiculously overpowered disc 1 final bosses so your character could escape, after he soloed one and got the living shit beat of him. Dude could have fit in in a modern day over the top action movie given how they wrote him.

He was an enjoyable character to listen too, which says something given how annoying some of the characters could be.
At least, he was up until he got eaten alive/went MIA. Still need to beat that game and figure out what the hell happened to him.

Gos Eater was anime Monster Hunter in terms of gameplay, plot, art.

Monster Hunter is massively more popular(and better imo), although GE has it's merits.

  • Fig-DFig-D SoCalRegistered User regular
He's confusing God Eater with Lord of Arcana, the Monter Hunter-like that Square Enix put out around the same time as GE.

If memory serves, Lord of Arcana had better character customization, God Eater had better gameplay.

    SteamID - Fig-D :: PSN - Fig-D
  • Page-Page- Registered User regular
Lord of Arcana is a dreadful game. Absolutely unplayable.

God Eater is basically Monster Hunter Lite: It's easier than Monster Hunter and there's less to do compared to modern Monster Hunter games. But it's still fun and I have high hopes for the sequel improving on a basically decent foundation.

I'm starting to warm up to the line-up. I've seen a bit of Namco X Capcom so I hope this will be as good.

    God Eater and Burst Spoilers
Lindow is a bit busy to be doing a cross-over... Aside from him, Sakuya would be a great choice though you cant really have one without the other. The candidates are of course: Alisa, who is in your face most of the time and Soma who is plot significant. Shio and Ren would be pretty akward...

    I wouldnt mind Gina/Kanon though.
