Presumably this thread is here because Facebook is a Technology (of sorts). If it's in the wrong place, I apologize.

There is a PA Forums specific group on Facebook. This isn't an advertisement for it (just a presentation of the being of it), but it is in existence for those of you wanting/able to check it out.

I know some of you hate social networks with the passion of ten-billion strong stick men (with guns), however I hate fake identities with the same amount of passion as above stick men and as such enjoy the company of non-anonymous entities (which Facebook has an inclination towards).

All are welcome (but please still adhere to the same stipulations you would follow in this forum)!

I recently checked out their Terms of Service. Why does it seem like they can take any info of you that you submit, use it however they wish at their whim regardless of context, and you wouldn't be able to do anything legally even if it damages you?

I know a lot of people that are on this thing, and I'd like to join, but I also want to make sure I'm not being paranoid about this by right now NOT joining on because of those ToS. Someone with experience want to clarify what's up with it all?

I have no qualms with their ToS, and have yet to experience any problems with the service at all. I'm not normally one to get involved in these social network sites, but this is a much more elegant system then others (such as Hi5 or Friendster).

I have a pretty tight group of friends that I studied in England with, and this allows us to keep in touch with each other easily, as we are now all over the freaking planet. Much easier than emailing and such...

I dunno BTP, I'm just as net saavy as any of us, and last time I checked it out at someone's prompting I was turned off by the whole thing and it didnt really feel like a place you'd want to put up any information about yourself.

I figure anyone who wants to get in touch can email or hop on msn (where they could get my cell for text messaging or calling too).

It's this that concerns me the most.
User Content Posted on the Site
You are solely responsible for the photos, profiles, messages, notes, text, information, music, video, advertisements and other content that you upload, publish or display (hereinafter, "post") on or through the Service or the Site, or transmit to or share with other Users (collectively the "User Content"). You understand and agree that the Company may, but is not obligated to, review and delete or remove (without notice) any User Content in its sole discretion, including without limitation User Content that in the sole judgment of the Company violate this Agreement or which might be offensive, illegal, or that might violate the rights, harm, or threaten the safety of Users or others.

By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing. You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire.

    First part: Okay.

Second part: WTF?! Irrevocable perpetual wha? So even if I removed everything from your site, you're still free to use whatever was there for your own desires? You're saying you can also give away this info to anyone and they can then use it for whatever they want?

But is that meaning for every piece you submit combined, meaning that if you kill your Facebook account THEN it expires, or is it for each individual piece where if you delete one single thing, that can no longer be used by them?

And how can something "perpetual" "expire"?

Well, I just checked out Photobucket's ToS, and they are similar, but then they are about posting pictures. Facebook is about your personal info. It's entirely different in that sense, and that's what makes me hesitant.

I wish. I signed up because I work in higher ed and that's where the prospective students are. Now old friends from college post photos of me and link them to my account. I don't have anything to be embarrassed about (aside from stupid looking haircuts), but I really miss the anonymity of the web at large.

    Yes.

You can also remain totally private and only allow people to see what information you wish.

What is the point of that though? I'm finding people on here that I haven't seen in years. If you're so afraid that your photo will get out, don't put it on there. I don't have any personal information on there except my name and an email address. Everything else is just interests of mine. I don't have my screenname, phone#, etc. on there.

Yeah. There are tons of joke users out there. My school has a Big Al Facebook user (Big Al is our mascot, a giant anthropomorphic elephant. I go to University of Alabama), I've seen Jesus, lots of others. The appeal to the site, though, is that you don't HAVE to hide behind an online identity. I mean, I guess if you're paranoid, then there you go, but as has been said, the second you delete your content they can't use it. So don't be stupid and put something up there you don't want people to see.

The problem with the photos is that you can be tagged by others in photos posted by others. I don't have a problem with that, but I can see where people might find that difficult. That said, you are able to remove tags at your will.

Yeeeaaaah, that's how I found out my ex-ex-ex-girlfriend was on there. Luckily there's a ban stick on there, and you can also untag pictures you don't want of yourself that others put on. I have been using that untag feature a lot lately....

    You can un-tag yourself.

Interestingly, I have already had a few friends who were on it remove themselves and then all the posts, walls they've been on, picture tags, notes, and everything that had their name on it dropped their existence from Facebookdom.

I wish there was an archival feature which took a snapshot of the day of your connections as an HTML file (like a digital memory) that you could view later, because as it is once people leave they're basically completely gone unless they choose to come back.

It is a perfect utility for keeping track of things you do away from the internet (and even for many of the things you do there too).

Depends. If you (like most people) are planning on posting all those pics taken at Friday night's drunken bar runs, you might have something to worry about if a future (or current) employer find it. If you're posting far out leftist/rightist activist views, you might be in the same boat. But if you're just using it to keep in touch with friends you don't get to see as often, you're probably okay.

My love/hate relationship with Facebook has been a large part of my collegiate experience. Its great because its allowed me to keep in touch with friends with much greater ease, organize events, etc. It really is an addiction though, and I'm not too proud to admit to "facebook stalking" people. Damn my curiosity...

As far as privacy issues are concerned, schools and employers have been known to look at profiles of students/job candidates. Some schools suspend underage students that post pictures of themselves drinking on campus. Employers might be dissuaded from hiring you if you post questionable photos of yourself. Same thing with myspace in fact. The terms of service have never bothered me though. I have nothing embarressing on my page, so I don't worry about it.

A PA forums group needs to be made.

But I can see that ToS excerpt being used as a defence when someone you don't wnat finds out your info on facebook front page, or the stalker ticker as I like to call it.

And this has made me into a friends whore. All you have to do is realise facebook is a game where the goal is to get more friends then your other friends.

EDIT; Wait can you make new networks? A PA network would be awesome:D
