Why are you upset at being an asshole to someone who insulted you?

Well actually now I think about it I insulted him first by implying he was thick.

I have a problem with thick people, which is not the best attribute in a teacher, I can tell you.

Ah, yeah. It can be pretty frustrating trying to teach someone something when they just aren't getting it, and also while they are doing a poor job of explaining why they aren't getting it. I know that feel bro.

Might be called Traffic Shaping or Traffic Prioritization.

Or it might not support it at all. A lot of ISP-supplied routers don't. :(

(I have QoS on my Linksys at home and I love it. It goes HTTP/HTTPS > Xbox > everything else > Bittorrent.)

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

I think if it was very specific it could be good, but otherwise it will just be 'America sux' vs 'America roolz'.

Maybe if it just wasn't about America? Explicitly? That might work.

I am focusing on political civil society as the poli sci term. The basis of society through mostly non-governmental associations. Going to be using a bit of Putman's "Bowling Alone" and I have another article on how the internet has decreased the civil society of the US more.

This is a very focused political science thread. I am not really talking about America's culture on it being awesome or sucking.

It helps that I am also a sort of ambivalent quasi-Anarchist I guess. Although I usually just use words like Leftist or Socialist, since a lot of people won't get terms like council communist or Anarcho-Communist. Also I suppose one of the reasons some people got really ticked off was your remark about them not understanding stuff because they are all American college kids.

Yeah, well, there was never going to be a way to say, 'American 20-somethings don't have enough experience of the world' nicely, though I was trying. That in itself is a little bit American, I think. If you said that kind of thing about me as an English 20-something, I would have replied, 'Pass the bong then.'

It's part of a demographic I think you're missing about the 20somethings in question - they've been told they're amazing and wonderful because self esteem is best esteem, and mostly had that proven because the arbiter of exceptional achievement - American public schools - simultaneously fails to educate and tells moderately intelligent kids that they're amazingly brilliant.

This seems like a good time to mention that I love one idea behind the Irish education system... you just study as normal for your entire school career, then they give you like 10 massive test covering 17 years of material that graduates you from public education.

You can't teach to the test because it would take forever.

You missed the whole idea behind self esteem and the end of tracking of students was from the Baby Boomers not wanting to hurt their children's feelings for not being good enough.
