PlayStation All Star Battle Royale, aka "Sony Smash Bros."

I... cannot believe I'm the one making this topic. Particularly that it hasn't already been made, but okay, let's do this...

So, the rumors are true: Sony is creating its own Super Smash Bros.-esque game featuring its hit franchises, and slightly different combat rules. And, they have even said that third parties are likely! But until Sonic is officially announced (and if), the topic remains here.

Without further ado... coverage? You want coverage? There's lots of coverage... but be warned, any of these sites could contain language/content which does not adhere to Bumbleking standards and regulations.

And my thoughts? With Sony's line-up of characters, they would be stupid not to do this very thing, so I don't blame them one bit. I'm sure Microsoft would as well, except I don't know that they have a line-up as suitable as Sony and Nintendo do.

I just hope they don't try to deny their influence here. Based on history, I know they probably will, but I hope they don't.

On another note: I hope they include Sophia, Polygon Man as a boss, and Kevin Butler in some capacity... maybe as an announcer?

Now, discuss.

I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt before I pass judgment, but so far I'm not too fond of the battle system. It sounds too easy to get the lead and then peace out from fighting. What I appreciate about Smash/Melee/Brawl is the One-Two Punch of mechanics. Timer/Stocks for life or points, and Percentage/Stage for damage. Each system picks up the slack for the other, making the game work as it does.

As for characters... probably Ratchet and Clank will be my most anticipated. Those are already confirmed, though, so who else? Crash Bandicoot seems like a no-brainer.

I was pretty iffy on this when the rumours first popped up (which were pretty easy to believe because there were way so many specific details) but I think I've come around to it. I mean, I probably won't buy it because I have no interest in SSB type games (though the way you "kill" opponents is far more appealing to me) but considering Nintendo's strategy of only releasing one SSB per generation and the complete lack of competitors (though there were a number of copy cats last gen), I don't see the harm in Sony trying out their hand. It obviously doesn't have icons like Mario or Pikachu in it and isn't going to be as enormously successful but who cares? If it sucks then that's not going to matter and if it's good then it'll probably do pretty decently.

It'll be interesting to see what other characters make the cut. Drake, Ratchet and Clank (as one character), Jak and Daxter (again, one character) and Sackboy are givens but it'll be interesting to see what third party characters they get in there. They need to be important to PlayStation, not just random characters like Ezio or whatever. So if I were to pick some I'd go with Cloud, Snake, Lara Croft and Crash Bandicoot. Others I'd deem worthy would be Dante, Jin, Kiryu and Spyro (though fat chance of the latter happening given the Skylanders redesign).

My initial thought was that there are really not enough iconic Sony characters to justify it, but if you go scraping, it could work. Especially if you allow for those games that aren't exclusive anymore, but still feel like they are, like MGS or SSX. ;D

Also Wander from Shadow of the Colossus or I'm out.

Excited just to see more Little Big Planet stuff. Sack Boy all the way.

I know it's PR speak, but to call God of War the best looking game on the planet seems.. Off.

I wear my Nintendo bias on my sleeve most of the time, and I don't own a PS3. But I do greatly enjoy brawlers, so to see a new one is fairly awesome. And we are definitely entering an age where video game characters are becoming like actors, appearing in other products more and more frequently. Again, fitting. I hope the final product rocks.

I'll admit, even though it'll never beat out Smash Bros for me, I am greatly excited about this. A chance to finally pit Ratchet and Jak against each other makes me super giddy. The fact that third party characters are confirmed also makes me happy.

    Basically my dream additions are:

    First Party:

    Ratchet and Clank
    Spyro
    Dart from Legend of Dragoon

    Third Party:

    Crash Bandicoot
    Black Mage from Final Fantasy

I can't believe the Joystiq twit actually said that he would prefer playing Kratos to Waluigi in a brawl game. I want the goofiest dang characters they can manage in this; leave Kratos out of it.

My only issue with it so far is the art direction. It's just terrible. I guess I was hoping they would try harder to mesh the several art styles so they didn't all look so out of place. This is something Nintendo has done amazingly in the Smash series. You could believe that Mario, Snake, and Olimar inhabit the same universe.

I'm hoping they tweak the art a bit to mesh it better. It looks closer to TMNT: Smash Up than it does to Smash Bros.

Kratos is going to be the "Stone Cold" Steve Austin of this game. Far too serious for the setting he's placed in to be taken credibly.

Sony can make a brawler and still have their own flair, their own unique take on the concept. However this is exactly like Smash, down to the way the characters spiral away when hit. Kinda lame there, Sony.

That's not what would stop me from getting it though. I won't get it because I really don't care about the "Sony" characters.

Well, Brawl wasn't fantastic. So, I'm pretty happy that somebody else is taking a crack at the genre.

That said, the art style isn't working in those videos. I'm also a bit concerned about the available pool of characters.

    So, mixed.

I like the idea of different franchises invading each others levels, but I get really competitive when it comes to Smash. Eventually, I don't care about the levels as long as the environment doesn't directly interfere with the gameplay.

Crash Bandicoot only, on Ultimate Stop, no pickups.

In all seriousness, I say let them make this. At worst, it'll be about as popular as that TMNT SSB-esque game. There are three ways people can look at this.

    1) Everyone will see the obvious influences and blast Sony for trying to bandwagon after Nintendo again.
    2) People who don't own a Wii, but like SSB games might consider getting this and enjoy it, provided the gameplay is solid, etc etc.
    3) Everyone says meh.

I'll probably keep an eye on further developments for this game, mostly to see what the final roster ends up being.

I don't like the idea of the levels being a mix of two different franchises. I quite like the LittleBigPlanet games but I've never touched the Buzz games and have no interest in them. Similarly, I've played Patapon but not God of War. So instead of a having single-franchise levels I can point to and say 'Yaaay, there's a franchise I like' there's going to be all these weird levels filled with stuff I don't want.

Probably because nobody else really thought anybody had much of a decent stable of characters to try and pull it off.

Which is kind of the issue I have with the game. Sure you can have the likes of Kratos, Nathan Drake, and Sweet Tooth, all 3 who are iconic in their own rights and have great games to their names. Slap them into a game together, along with the likes of Parappa the Rapper and... Fat Princess??? and you get a game that feels more like an episode of The Surreal Life than a mixing of legacy characters.

I mean, think of any and every possible character they could add to this game. I postulate that nobody... nobody will garner any reaction coming close to what this video received.
