Regarding Making Mead

MalteaseMaltease Registered User regular
edited April 2012 in Social Entropy++
My roommate and I have to decided to endeavor to make some mead! I was wondering what all flavors you guys have had or made yourselves before. The recipe calls for key limes and mint (they refer to it as a "mojito mead") but neither of us are big on mojitos. Any suggestions?

*EDIT*
To keep this on topic, let's just broaden this to all self-prepared booze. Stories, special recipes, general discussion on making your own liquor. No moonshine though. Cause eff moonshine. Tears me UP.

I'd probably poke around the "Help & Advice" forum bud. But if you wanna stick around here, beef up that OP with a bunch of info on mead and prepare to get off-topic.

Cause mead is an incredibly sensitive thing to homebrew, and takes a good many months to mature and find out if you have something great or something shitty.

Cinnamon sticks add a nice touch once you get the basic recipe down.

Never tried making mead, but yeah it is a long process. It is pretty tasty though.

Just throw some honey and yeast together and see what you get.

Making it from scratch, sir. We know it's gonna take awhile. It'll be really young when we want to drink it (halloween), but we know the consequences.

I looked into making mead around when skyrim came out.

Because I am a huge nerd like that.

But after trying some store bought stuff I came to the conclusion I wouldn't really like it anyway.

Once I made some homemade kahlua from like, grain and sugar and coffee grounds

It was too sweet for me so I freeze distilled it

I think I was the only one who liked it after that point

It was like being punched in the face with a frappucinno

a few friends of mine made mead, once

what I learned was never give up, no matter how cloudy it looks or how shitty it smells, and don't tell too many people because mead is apparently a pretty hard drink to take seriously

If you do go ahead to brew your own mead @Maltease I want pictures of the entire process, because that should be a fun thing to watch.

To be fair, last time I had it I probably shouldn't have been having it (for legal reasons). That was probably...5 years ago? I haven't tried it since. Who knows, maybe I like it now? That new brand they sell at the Hy-Vee near here actually looks pretty good. It's flavored with berries (like blueberries and strawberries) and has a CRAP ton of actual berries floating in it.

I mean, I was gonna post it all on facebook anyway. So I suppose I could upload it here as well.

As a moonshiner, I would agree. But mead is a super huge pain to make.

For your first batch I would contact a supply store and go with a premade (probably for your first three or so) before trying your own recipe. Most pre-made brew kits run between $30-$50 for the materials, though it can get much higher for mead depending on the market price of honey at the time.

Don't skimp on your equipment or (and especially) your sanitizer. A quality sanitizer is the difference between terrible piss and a good brew.

Oooookay. Here's the thing: Moonshine isn't really a branded thing.

Around here when we say it we're referring to the white corn whiskey that we make or that is made in an often legally grey area. Not what you bought at the Hy-Vee with berries.

If you are just wanting to try some, this company makes a very solid and affordable mead that is smooth and not over sweet:

Sorry, I should've been more clear DrZiplock. It's marketed as moonshine, though I understand by the very nature of the word moonshine can't be sold legally. From what I can remember it's pretty much just flavored Everclear (the kind that was bought, I mean). They just slap the word moonshine on it and there you go.

My great granpa on my mom's side ran Moonshine and probably other stuff during prohibition.

My great granny's first husband was in the mafia and got murdered.

    She was a flapper.

If you can, you could try Boulevard. That may be a missouri only thing though, I'm not 100% sure. Their wheat is the BUSINESS though.

The first beer I liked was Hoegaarden.

It's not bitter at all, and it's an ale so it doesn't have that nasty lager taste.

Gonna be honest here, I've only ever been given big label light beers.

I wouldn't know where to begin on anything because the only beer I've had has been nasty as hell.
