I've met bombs, firman, gibs, iridium_ape, and sorta caprice. It seems that I've met way more people from SE++ since that's who I've hung out with at SDCC for the most part.
Everytime I mention my prices I feel like people are going to go "What the hell, you think you're worth that much?" and get super anxious.
Some rappers are cool on Facebook, they're like "That's more than fair!". But occasionally I get the "wtf I know for a fact others aint pay u that much w/e" and I feel really bad.
It's hard to communicate to a non-artist why I'm constantly doing free artwork as fanart, fun in my own time, and why I want money if it's someone asking me for something specifically.
That really makes me wonder about introducing contracts. I have had delinquent clients before. But it feels like I'm not at a high enough level yet to justify the formality.
I do have that Graphic Artists Guild book, need to finally read it.
When I'm doing things that are essentially personal commissions (like tattoos) I find contracts to be a little cumbersome, but if its not a person on the forums, I take half upfront.
If its an entity of any sort, contracts are in order. Legit companies should have their own, for tax reasons. Underground Rap artists may not, but either way, its best to be as upfront about costs as you can. I calculate my price by the hour, and ball park it based on that. I will tell people if their revisions are getting them close to the cap of the estimate and they can decide if they want to continue. For the most part, I haven't run into any huge problems.
If you get dudes gawking at more than reasonable prices, You probably dodged a bullet not working for them.

You're never too low a level to start looking into contracts, if that were the case you'd never build up to BEING a high enough level to start using them (gotta start somewhere).
I've met Cakemikz/rts, Loomdun, Mars Elliot, a guy who I forgot the handle of who visited Watts once (sorry if it was you, I just remember you had done a master copy of a Frazetta painting in your sketchbook), and ND.
ND had the stellar idea of bribing me with donuts to cinch the deal though, so I'm pretty sure I need to demand donuts or better from now on so I don't cheapen the apparent going rate on meetups with me.
Also, all y'all better never say I don't listen to y'all:
I've never met anyone from PA. But I've talked to a few in games before! That's almost the same, right?
Also, I've discovered that instagram is a instant confidence booster. Throw up some art, put in a couple hashtags and BAM! People you don't know start liking it.
i use a loose "email contract" for everything i do
the terms, conditions, dates, dollars, all that good stuff. names. have them respond saying that they agree to everything. then that email is saved.
it works and it clears everything up for both parties. it can be used as a legal document in court i believe. judge judy would take it and that's good enough for me!
also yes hello i have met dmac
and firman and gibs
and lexxy and beavo
and many more
Nah, he's building it from a kit. I can't remember the model or anything. He said it'd have a 1000 mile range, two seats (one behind the other), and something like a 250mph airspeed. He sure is having a mid-life crisis, but it's good to see him happy and hopeful for a change.
So the new indie games subforum is a cool idea, but I don't know whether it's for the discussion of indie games or for people who are developing their own games or both.
I've met a bunch of Australians from SE++ but not so many from the AC (Fletcher and Synthetic Orange were there though). All you guys should come down for the Australian PAX so we can hang out.

I'm so jealous! The only AC'er I've met is Adam. Though I guess you should all be jealous of me since he's basically the coolest dude ever.
EDIT: and I totally plan to crash Vancouver someday and go skating with Mully and then try to get Bombsy's autograph
I'm so excited for you, Bacon! I love Parker! And Y! And Doug TenNapel! And Chew! And Blacksad is gorgeous!
I'm going to go camping with Bombs and Mully! I am buying some toys to play with in the wilderness, including a hatchet from China that will probably get confiscated at customs even though I could go buy one at Wal-Mart with no issue.
I was thinking I never met anyone from AC, I forgot MD cause when I met you, your avatar evaporated! It was weird! You became the girl who made that cool cover on that book that was rad.
Huh, I have met a lot of forumers irl, but the only one from the AC is Alyce. It is weird that there are not many art-ers in NYC.
Oh, also Nanaki! I met her at the Khoo meetup.
Molybdenum, if you ever end up hanging out in the city while you're out here I will buy ya a beer or something.
Bacon - they have to be APPLE CIDER DONUTS, or better. I will hold you to this. (Also, almost nothing is better than apple cider donuts. I am sorry).
Also: I think I allllmost met Iruka, but then I got lost in Baltimore for too long and ruined schedules. Then I think there was a chance I'd meet Alyce, but schedules didn't work out...I think?
They're not particularly apple cider-y. They're just....augh god they're amazing
I'll second this.
Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I've had a single donut since moving back to California.
And now that you've got me thinking about it, now I want some of those donuts.
Get a job in California and bring some of those donuts with you.
(And give them to me.)
I suppose I could have tried to meet you at some point when I was living in Boston, but since I naturally had assumed you were just going to come down and kidnap me anyway I never thought to make any specific plans.
EDIT: On the subject of hangouts in general, I'd find them so much easier if I actually thought my social company was something worth actively seeking out rather than something that may be tolerable in small doses (I've got some self-image problems, clearly). I'd have a better time of it if. instead of the go-to hangout option being "hey let's go for a drink" (which is a social situation that completely terrifies me since I don't drink), more people wanted me to like, help them assemble some IKEA furniture they had just picked up.
That way even if they get tired of me almost immediately at least I get to prove I've got some value if just as a kind of assembly robot. (I guess the downside of this strategy to lure me into hangouts is that if someone decided they really liked me, they'd likely have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on cheap furniture they neither want nor need.)
Kevin you and I should go out to a bar sometime so that it's just us sitting awkwardly with ginger ales, nervous about making a bad impression and saying nothing.

don't blame you

It was for that Donald Glover concert but I was busy then, and I ended up seeing him in the city a few months after.

No, but I was thinking about going to the one in Toronto.
Hey, you still in the Cincy area? We were supposed to meet up that one time, but crap happened.

oh internet
I really do want to make a trip back to the DC area if I can next spring or summer. I also need to hit up NYC again.
I think he's out of town now too. But we'll both be back in January! Big hangouts must occur.
I'll second this.
