Bacon, I'm sure that your company is well worth a kidnap!

Also, I made it through the first round of strip search! Too early to pack bags for west coast?

Hi-five! :) I did, also, but honestly I think they want to do the show around the time the kid is due, so I feel sort of weird about filling out the round 2 application. I guess my chances are minute enough though it's probably a non-issue. :D

So what's the deal, do you get an e-mail if you make it or if you don't? I've heard people have received e-mails from both sides of that fence and my wife and I haven't gotten an e-mail yet.

that would certainly make for an action packed episode

Ah-Ha! I did not make it past the first round! Not surprised and kind of relieved! Congrats you two! That is awesome! I really hope someone from the forum makes it to the end, more than one would be awesome!

Hell I can't even remember which e-mail address I submitted from. I've checked both my gmail boxes and I don't see a receipt confirmation of my submission.

I mean in all likelyhood I got rejected, it just bugs me that I don't see an e-mail either way.

edit: did anyone get an e-mail when they submitted an application saying "application received" ?

I'm gonna take a trip to DC in early november. I might also go to NY. What kind of weather should I expect?

  • squidbunnysquidbunny Registered User regular
Coldish. I don't think it's terribly dissimilar from what you'd see in most of Japan in November...?

Is anyone here right now that's an InDesign expert (I've never used it) who could whip me up a template if I've got all the specs for bleed and trim size?

I'm not asking you to put a book together for me or anything, just make me a template so that I can work on the layout over the weekend and hopefully save some time.

  • squidbunnysquidbunny Registered User regular
If you know all those specs you just input them when setting up your document (be sure you hit More Options) and InDesign applies them so I'm not sure what the point would be. Regardless, if you plan on working a bunch with InDesign I think it's worth familiarizing yourself with how to set up and use your own page masters, etc..

Thanks! I know I need to get better with it, it's just that I need to make these two books now, and I won't need to make any more for probably a year from now after that. (I've honestly just got the 30 day trial installed for the time being)

I'll mess with it though and figure it out, you're right, that's the better idea.

    Unfortunately, we don’t feel this
season of Strip Search is right for you – there are only a dozen
spots to fill, so we’ve had to make some difficult decisions in our
    selection process.

Good luck on your future endeavors – we’ll have your application
on file in case we feel your talents will be a better match for a
    future season. Thanks!

    Same!

    Whooaaaaaaa. Unforeseen, J.

This, coupled with questions on the round 2 application, have me thinking they're picking to maximize drama/human interest vs. straight up selecting for storytelling/cartooning ability. :/

I'm really surprised more of you in the AC didn't make it to round 2. Based on what squid just said, I really hope they aren't going to turn it into a typical drama reality show.

I get that sells ads and all, but this competition will LITERALLY make someone a professional, full time paid cartoonist pretty much overnight. I mean you're going to start off day one of winning the competition in one of the best creative environments with the potential to have hundreds of thousands of readers instantly.

Honestly I've compared it to the old newspaper syndicate model (from the 40's to the 70's), where a cartoonist gets the job and they're pretty much made from there on out.

I'd much rather see that go to someone with real skill and storytelling ability over someone that's good at starting shit online with people and stirring the pot.

  • squidbunnysquidbunny Registered User regular
Hopefully they balance these two important factors.

Eventually the whole show will just consist of AC'ers going "uhh... sup guys" instead of anything related to drama. The show's soundtrack will thence forth be a cricket sonata.

It's going to be interesting to see what and who do end up making it through.

I was gonna say "I dunno if cartoonists are really the best people to create massive drama and tantrums" and then I remembered some of the webcomic hissy fits of yesteryear ... is it just me, or are there less of those around now?

It does seem like the webcomics communities I encountered in my youth were a lot more contentious; I don't know if that's true, but I think a lot of drama migrated to insular sub communities on livejournal and deviantart and so on.

I think the potential audience is a factor in the choices here, especially since it's the first time around with this contest. Whoever does end up winning is going to end up being under the same level of scrutiny as the PA family. It's a lot of pressure and I am sure some of the choices in the early rounds are going to be based on snap judgments of, "how well the PA audience might receive this comic" without being a comment on the artist's abilities at all.

Also, Scott Kurtz mellowed out a lot.

  • amateurhouramateurhour One day I'll be professionalhour The woods somewhere in TennesseeRegistered User regular
I don't think it's changed. I've seen a few little sub-communities pop up here and there since around 2006 and it seems like every one of them has a bone to pick with the other. Someone with Topatoco doesn't like someone at Blind Ferret. Someone at Blind Ferret doesn't like a con promoter so they don't go to any cons in a regional area and therefore it's now a twitter war. Small press group A hates big group C because they offered a deal to a member of Small Press group B, etc...

Nothing's ever going to change there, but it's also not something that's limited to the comics world.

Hell, I remember Kurtz talking on a WW podcast (one of the last few) about how he caught shit for not going to Webcomics Weekend year 2 like he was too good for it or something, and getting shit from the other side about if he had gone because that's a space a lesser known comic guy could have taken.

Again though, that's just drama, it's going to exist anywhere. I've seen people on bass fishing forums threaten to kick the others mother's ass over something as dumb as plastic vs live bait.

Well, here is hoping they put a good show on. I would rather see talent than drama, but I also never watch Cake Person or Cook Show or Eat Factor or America's Got Singing (those are shows, right?) so I am probably not their target audience in that respect.

I think that best sums it up. Once you breach a certain degree of celebrity (be it art or music or whatever) certain people will not like you for one reason or another.

Congrats To @squidbunny and @earthwormadam and @rfilyaw !!! You are all awesome in completely different ways and I honestly think if it was just you three it would be an amazing show. You each have a very well developed style that plays to your subject matter. My hat is metaphorically off to you three. Well, @Toji suzuhara ,@nibcrom, wanna go out for a drink to nurse our wounds and talk bad about the suckers that made it to round two?

I think just the idea of facing Squidbunny and Rfilyaw, is pretty terrifying without even considering the hundreds of other artists I don't even know about haha!

I miss the old internet wars of yesteryear sometimes. I think the squidi deal was one of my favourites. Tauhid was basically the catalyst that shut down that comic.

Giving how fuckawesome EWAdam was at war for arcadia and Squid's crazy dope art stuff in her last forum battle, I would tune in to see them throw down in an old fashioned comic war. Hell, I would pay to see that, and I am one penny pinching cheapskate...

I would like to hang out a bit more over here than I have lately. I miss this place.

Who wants to read my submission for my 200 word (hopefully entertaining) story?
I was a solitary sasquash. No-one to look after me, no-one to care for me and cook me eggs benedict in the warm sunny morning. Living alone in the woods for so long, with no means to shave my underarms, has taken its toll. The world is a cruel and heartless place, but one that I must except.

I once tried to integrate myself into society, but the constant badgering grew tiresome. "For a big-foot, you sure have tiny feet," they would say. "Your armpit hair has become unkempt and snarly," they would jab. It was the tipping point of my adolescence. I never even got my GED.

And so I fled to the deep woods, with only my thoughts to keep me company. And this cricket. I love you little cricket. Not sure what I would do without you actually.

So dark, so noisy and cold blooded, like the society that has shunned me. Are you a boy or a girl? I don't know, but you put my mind at ease, and together, we are happy. You make noise to let me know you're nearby, but when I get close you stop chirping, and I can't find you. I know you would make me some eggs if they made little eggs the size of crickets. Also you would need some little mini-pans.
