Fly non-stop if you can, even if it costs a little more. I have wasted so many hours of vacation time and worn myself out trying to save a bit on airfare.

Try to fly early in the day. Then, if a problem pops up, you still have a chance at making it to your destination without an extra overnight stay.

Airports vary wildly for cost, complexity and security hassles. Security in larger hubs that see a lot of international visitors will be much more frustrating and time consuming. Don't try to use one experience as a bench mark.

Don't buy the same black soft-sided rolling luggage that everyone else has. It is impossible to spot coming off of the baggage carousel. If you do have this type of luggage, buy a couple of brightly colored neon tags.

There will probably not be any food available on the plane, although there should be some type of beverage service. You can buy a bottle of water after you have passed through security. Bring some small snacks.

If you have a weak bladder get an aisle seat.

Oh, one more trick I learned for luggage that looks similar to everyone else's; wrap painter's tape around one or two of the handles, the blue stuff.

Its easy, buy your tickets online
book a place to stay online and look up how to get there
    pack your stuff
Rock up on the day and fly across the country
Catch a bus or what have you to where you need to sleep

    You have succeeded

I travelled europe alone for 2.5 months, it was rad

Even if you stayed in hostels that must have been really expensive.
