Ok, so serious question: When you came out as being gay, what were the repercussions?

My mom cried because I couldn't give her grandchildren.

Other than that not a whole lot changed.

My mom actually asked me if I was gay because of a long story.
tl;dr version is my friend slept over (platonic) and slept in the same bed and since I lied about it (my dad peeked in when he left in the morning), he thought I was gay.
She asked expecting me to say I wasn't.

She said she was fine with it... then apparently cried for a week. But that was about 10 years ago, so things are fine now.
Like any good southern family, we generally don't discuss it. :P

And yeah all the cynicism about this was bumming me out.

Of the people I grew up with in rural south carolina, only 1-2 gave me crap. And it wasn't "YOU HATE GAYS" or anything, it was one saying I was doing it for attention (lol) and the other just stopped talking to me.

Basically, has anyone just treated you negatively on the basis of your sexuality, then used religion as a pretext for it?

Question, Nevs: is it cowardice to hide your bisexuality from co-workers, knowing that it avoids complications from conservative corporate heads and potential loss of friendship with some work friends? Because I feel like chicken shit a lot over this.

Metroid speaking of which, I have a similar dilemma about the fact that I "pass" as straight and since I never have boyfriends or anything, people never really guess that I'm gay. So sometimes I feel like by not talking about it I'm "hiding", but at the same time I don't actually care enough to tell people unless there's a reason for it to come up in conversation.. it's odd.

I've gotten better about genuinely not caring if people know though. And I mean that both ways - I don't care if they do know, and I don't care if they don't. :P

It's helped since I joined facebook and put it in my profile, as silly as that sounds. At least now I feel like if people want to know it's there.

Not at all. Co-workers are just that. I don't necessarily flaunt it, although my coworkers are all friends with me on facebook, and I hide nothing there. But if you don't feel like sharing, then don't.
Although I'd personally say anyone who wouldn't be your friend because of it isn't your friend at all. But I've been in your place before so I get that.

The worst story (which is true) is a friend of mine came out and his dad literally had a heart attack.
They guilt tripped that guy for fucking years.

"Going to meet gays? You can't use our car. After what happened to your father..." blah blah.
After a few years he finally said fuck that and left and told them not to talk to him until they would stop guilt tripping him.

My gaydar is pretty bad for the most part. Barring a dude having a poodle, it's really hit or miss.

except for fictional characters for some odd reason. (One notable exception being Dumbledore, but I'd wondered briefly before getting distracted by the amazingness that was Deathly Hallows and don't test me on this or you will GET CUT and then not thinking about it for a while until the big reveal.)

It depends. Also going to DigiPen nearly broke me.
It turns out nerds have really bad social cues. There are some spectacularly flamboyant yet ENTIRELY heterosexual guys.
@Rankenphile can back me up on this. One guy in particular. He's a cool guy and is very supportive of gays, but isn't gay.

    Allegedly.
(I'd have bet $500 that he was and lost, apparently. I still dunno if I believe that.)

I dunno, I've known for a while now, so it's kind of hard for me to remember when I first found out.

I often need to remind myself of how lucky I am in the family game

I am 100% sure that if I came out in any way to my family this is what would happen:

My dad would say "ok!" then make a joke
My mum would literally be super happy about it if it made me happy
My brothers would barely even notice
My sisters-in-law would dance around and applaud
