Windows file associations are being retarded

Sorry for such a weird thread, but I've been searching the internet for so long without any answer that I'm starting to give up hope.

Problem in a nutshell: If I assign a program to a file type, I can no longer move the program to a different location OR choose another instance of that program. Trying to do that just brings back the file association window without the newly chosen program present- only the old one remains. If the old location/copy has been removed, I can't choose this program at all.

This has been going on since WinXP at least and is still happening in Win7.
Has anybody got experience with this?

On Win7, try going through the Default Programs menu (just type it in the start menu). Maybe you'll have better luck there.
