Going to grad school in Monterey, CA

So I'm starting in the translation/interpretation program at the Monterey Institute of International Studies this fall. I'm incredibly excited but also have sporadic bouts of OMGWHATAMIGONNADO panic.

So, what would be nice to know about the area for someone who's coming in from a big dense Asian city? In particular I would like to know if it's at all feasible to get by without owning a car, since my driving skills are... rusty, to say the least. General advice on the whole going abroad for grad school thing would be nice, too.

All advice really appreciated; I don't even know what it is I don't know at this point.

The best people to talk to are current grad students in the program, since they'll know where you can live on your budget.

Monterey is awesome. Most parts aren't very walkable though. Small city so, doesn't really matter. Not really sure of racial makeup, but I would say if you were going to describe it it wouldn't be as "Asian. . ." Pricey though, expect to pay out the nose if you want to live downtown.
