My impression is that it's either the RMAH, or subscription fees for all of us. Battle.net for Diablo 3 won't pay for itself, you know. I'll probably poke my head in the RMAH once in a while, but it's not FOR me. If the RMAH will keep the Diablo 3 servers running for the next gajillion years, I accept it. I don't plan to sell on it or use it.

But that's the beauty: I don't have to.

Oh no no no. They could have put all this stuff client side and it would have been absolutely fine. You are putting your either or premise too far down the chain of logic. They made it a streaming client-server game to justify the RMTAH to justify the streaming client-server game.

This is horse shit. Even if there were no auction houses at all people care a lot about the sanctity of the item economy and not having it ruined by dupes and hacks. A secure online environment allows the game to actually have an economy between players, as opposed to games like Borderlands and Torchlight 2 which have or will have almost no security and no economy.

There's a pretty significant upside though... A safe way to buy items for real money (which, let's face it, was going to happen with or without Blizzard's blessing)

My point is, yeah.. It's a cash grab. But it's a cash grab that also happens to benefit us, the players. End to end, cheating, duping and scamming are all practically impossible. That seems like a pretty noble endeavor.

If all that means is that I have to endure some first-week random downtime... Well, it's a sacrifice I'm happy to make.

Okay so I poked my head in the gold auction house and found that the 15% fee was still there. I still think it's just a bad design decision. The gold is virtual so it doesn't pay for any "expenses" for running an auction house. I guess it's a gold sink or something? But why would you slap a gold sink on something that's designed to eliminate the awfulness of third party trading sites and friending strangers? It's like "hey, we made you this great tool, but we don't want you to use it."

Profile -> Signature Settings -> Hide signatures always. Then you don't have to read this worthless text anymore.

Hah, maxed artisan. The best rares cost around 50k gold to craft, so I guess I won't be getting much out of it yet. Then again, they are inferno-level rares, so a good roll could be nice..

The Act III boss is definitely the worst offender:
Because he does the same thing a zillion times.

'You weak pathetic fool! You cannot hope to stand against my X!"
    <Destroys X>
"Who cares about X! You weak pathetic fool! You cannot hope to stand against my Y!"

Which makes him look totally incompetent.

Of course Belial is also the worst Archdemon of lies too, with the flimsiest excuses to why a boy-king employs demonguards, can teleport, and open magical gates.

Diablo at least gets to his goal and nearly succeeds before you reach him.

Act I is done somewhat decently storywise, apart from the Maghda stuff. The Leoric lore is pretty nice.
Then again, the forces of Hell were facing near certain defeat after Mephisto, Diablo and Baal had been destroyed. The Angiris Council remained whole, after all, and they were of equal strength to all seven lords of Hell to begin with, because of their unity. Diablo wouldn't have been able to attack the heavens and defeat Imperius without becoming a hybrid of all the seven Evils. They had to get killed to be able to join each other in the Black Soulstone, but they needed to make it look like they were making an effort, or else the PC and/or Leah might have seen through Leah's mothers' deception. This is my interpretation anyway, and it certainly explains Belial and Azmodan's seeming incompetence.
I don't think Belial/Azmodan knew what was up. Also, the Angiris Council wasn't whole. Wisdom had disappeared. Tyrael obviously also went rogue too.

Yours is certainly the more rational interpretation of what Blizzard is showing us. I just try to figure out the story they might have intended to tell us before something went wrong somewhere. The whole thing has the feel of a script that started out awesome, but got mangled in the process of getting filtered through marketing and other executives. The same thing we see in movies all the time. In D3 it just isn't as jarring (to many players) because it isn't a story-driven game.

It's a gold-sink mechanism. Most people selling on the AH obviously find that the convenience of listing their item up to a huge market is worth more than the nominal fee. Personally I am all aboard for any tools that help fight inflation and ensure that gold remains a relevant currency.

So how does the RMAH work anyway? Do I have to spend actual money to put up items, or can I just throw shit up there and hope someone is willing to throw a $1 at whatever piece of shit Im selling? How large of a cut does Blizzard take?

I..I paid like zero attention to this game prior to purchasing it (which I did the day it came out, because come on, Diablo 3).

Blizzard has clarified over twitter that the maintenance should only affect the AH. Game servers should stay up.

CORRECTION: Maintenance on #D3 to only be on the gold auction house. Players may be removed from the game but should be able to re-log.

You can list items on the RMAH, up to a 10 item limit, for free. If the item sells a $1 listing fee or 15% commodity fee is cut from the sale price. If you chose to cash out (you have to choose paypal or B.net bucks at the time you list the auction, not when it sells) Paypal exacts an additional 15% fee.

Speaking of being kicked and re-logging, last night I joined general chat because I heard that was a thing. I didn't have any problems besides minor latency issues, but is there a way to join general chat but mute it so I don't have to see people talking? Or do I just have to deal with it?

Is anyone making good use of Seven-Sided Strike? If so, how do you do it. That 27 second cooldown makes the whole thing seem really underwhelming. I'll admit I haven't played with it much.

Does it involve using two-handed weapon for big hits? What does the rest of your build look like. It seems like a cool skill, but I'm having a hard time trading it out for... well, anything else.

I use SSS for single target damage, and for hazard avoidance. I find it's very helpful for fighting elite packs and bosses (treasure goblins too) where you can isolate them and connect with all the hits. Especially towards the end of normal and into nightmare the invulnerability it provides is almost as useful as the damage, for things like evading freezing crystals and getting hits in on mobs with nasty hazards. I used the teleport rune for most of normal but am experimenting with the stun rune now.

    I use

1: Cyclone Strike with the rune that makes it cost 20 spirit
    2. Serenity with the heal rune
    3. Seven sided strike with stun rune
    4. Mantra of healing with spirit regen rune
    L-mouse hundred fists
R-mouse exploding palm with 12% damage boost rune

Passives: Exalted Soul, Chant of Resonance, Transcendence

I mainly use it as part of my boss-killing skillset. It's not great against crowds, but when there's only one big enemy, it does a pretty hefty amount of damage to that one enemy, plus you're immune to damage while it's going on.

My other boss-kill skills are Way of Hundred Fists, Sweeping Wind... a couple others, I forget. I only just completed Normal though, so I'm only pulling from lvl 30ish skills/runes.

This is what I'm using, just finished Nightmare Act I with it and I'm like a walking blender. Using this build I'm able to get my DP to roughly 1165 if I have everything running.

I'm loving it and I am staying alive really well while my more tanky, buddies tend to drop in the dicey engagements.

Base DPS with no buffs running is 855 with my gear, and I'm sitting on I think 300+ hp and close to 1300 armor.

I'm at like.. 400.. something DPS, 4500 HP and I'm not sure how much armor. Of course I'm equipping more for magic find than damage.. ;/

Question: I'm just sitting here eating dinner and got to thinking - what the heck will the Real Money AH mean for gaming in terms of a persons' property interest in their virtual items? I.e would a court ever entertain an action for theft if your buddy took your item / stole your account or something along those lines. It used to be everyone kind of laughed it off, it was part of the product, etc. etc. But now, I wonder if this will lead to things being viewed differently.

Some days Blue wonders why anyone ever bothered making numbers so small; other days she supposes even infinity needs to start somewhere.

So I'm reading the affixes in the strategy guide posted online(very blurry pictures). Inferno is split into tiers 15-18 if I'm not mistaken. the difference is insane between act 1 inferno and act 4 inferno loot. You could get 3200 hit points per second with act4 rare items all with well rolled hit point regen, and the other 5 affixes could be other stuff.

Every time the game goes "schwinggg, Checkpoint Reached" it has essentially saved your location to that point. If you die you will respawn there, and if you quit the game you have the option of "resuming" at that point again, even if it's in a dungeon. If you completed the demo then most likely what happened is you had no quest to "resume" so when you hit start you had The Fallen Star selected and it started you at the beginning again. This works both ways though, and you can skip back forward to the quest to kill Leoric since you've gotten to it previously.
