I actually think that stuff will have very little effect in terms of dota2's overall popularity. It's great for people that are invested in the game already, but it doesn't do anything for spectators. Twitch.tv/own3d.tv have already covered the broadcasting market and strong communities (TL, solomid) cover the strategies for the hardcore.
Also dotatv has the potential to cut out twitch/own3d from the loop. This is fine for players as they get far more value out of dotatv, but streaming is a large revenue stream that valve needs to be mindful of.
They are going to sell tournament passes through the game.
If you want something ad free, at the highest resolution/frame rate possible where you can live chat with your friends on the spot via text or voice that's what you get. Otherwise you watch through twitch, as adsupported.
Also Valve can do super cool things like give away items to the audience.
You want a hat for your characters that says "I was at the International"?. Watch through the ingame GUI.
Digital concessions stands man.
Also note that MOBA has the least available ad time out of basically any ESPORT. It is about 1 hour games which can not be uninterrupted whatsoever without igniting fury.
Eh, realistically...you could pause a moba game at almost any point and really not throw off any of the players too badly. At least not in comparison to a real rts or fps.

Yeah. I need to amend the rules to be overall map score first, then tiebreaker series. I suppose it's still possible for the following scenario to arise:
A : 3-0 (6 map wins)
B : 1-2 (2 map wins)
C : 1-2 (2 map wins)
D : 1-2 (2 map wins)
In which case we'll have to do a mini-round robin (with BO1s) to determine the person who advances.

shockingly the guy who opened by saying he hates starcraft 2, mocked me for saying I liked it, and then tried to talk about diablo 3 with me 4 gated. and then immediately told me I play too much because I was ready for it.
sadly I eventually lost the game. gogo forcefields. my own fault anyway, one scan in base and I'd have won when the colossus came out instead of panicking and ultimately losing. I let people get in my head way way way too much.
edit - ugh and it was like the reverse of having a bonus pool, I lost way more points than I won even though I only lost 1 extra game. that sucks.
Although your offer is appreciated, I would be uncomfortable with that.

When you think about gas, you should think about the things that you can spend gas on and when you want or need them. In general those are gas units, upgrades, and tech; which specifically are roach/bane, speed and 1/1, and bane nest/lair.
Initial gas:
If you want to play defensively, and don't mind letting the Terran know, you don't need gas before 40ish food, as none of the above are necessary to defend attacks before that point. A half dozen queens with spines and spores as appropriate are capable of defending any harass or pressure that doesn't have a large marine count, which will take him time to build up.
If you want to be aggressive or fake aggression, you should get a gas before or while your pool is building. Once you have map control with either speedlings or roaches, the Terran is forced to play safe or risk dieing to a bust. Even just something light like 'hatch > pool > warren > handful of roaches' will catch a lot of people off-guard with a single or no bunker and win you the game right there (happened to MKP in TAC the other day).
Further gasses:
As far as teching goes, 2 base lair is almost always worse than 3 base lair. You're safe to take a third as soon as you can confirm that the Terran has expanded, and new queens enable you to start it against hellion play without committing gas to speedlings or roaches, so you can continue to delay additional gasses until after the third hatch is started. Once you have that third started and decent mineral saturation, going to 4 gasses is a good idea.
If on the other hand you want to heavily pressure or all-in with a significant number of roaches and/or banes off 2 bases, you don't need more than 2 gasses to get a good mix of ling/bling/roach
Evos:
Always make an evo around 6 minutes as banshee insurance. Beyond that, starting 1/1 with your first 200 gas (before ling speed) is something I see a lot of people do. I wouldn't recommend doing it blind, as marine only pushes will be hugely cost effective against slowlings, but if you can scout that he's teching or taking a third it will work fine.
My personal suggestions based on stuff I find annoying:
Grab 1 gas and pull out after you mine 200. Go for speed and 4 roaches. Poke with the roaches and if he's playing unsafe rally in some speedlings to punish him. If not just keep droning as usual. Continue from there based on scouting information.
2 base push with marines only: bane nest > 1/1 > banes as needed > lair
2 base push with tanks or medivacs: 1/1 > bane nest > lair > banes as needed
fast third: 1/1 > lair
mech: 1/1 for roaches > lair > roaches as needed
