This is pretty great.
Having said that, I don't like this. I don't like them. I can't quite put my finger on why though. It felt too strained and overacted for my tastes and yes, I get that it could be a side effect of the game they were reviewing, but it's still a complaint. I will probably give them another chance or two, but it was a bad first impression.
I thought the indoor guy was pretty funny but the outdoor sequences didn't make sense and simply fell flat. Unfortunately I can't refer to the guys by name because they didn't introduce themselves. I'll probably keep watching for a while and/or check out the other episodes on their website to see if it improves or grows on me.
My main suggestion: I like how on Wil Wheaton's tabletop game YouTube show (aptly named "Tabletop") they actually play the game instead of just talking about it. It makes it a lot easier to understand how a game works and whether or not I'd consider playing/purchasing it. It also means that the entertainment value comes from the natural interactions between the players and the progression of the game instead of overacted, pre-planned comedy bits.
I felt like with Citadels they did a somewhat better job of explaining how the game works than with K2, though even with Citadels their explanations weren't great. With K2 they said "you play three cards a turn and try to get up the mountain" but didn't explain what the cards did. With Citadels they went into more detail about the characters and strategy but they didn't talk at all about what the buildings or money did or the ultimate goal of the game.
I'll definitely stick around but I still like Tabletop better.
FYI: in the K2 episode, the indoor guy is Paul and the outdoor guy is Quinns. Paul is the one with the beard.
And that beard is to be feared.
We're very excited to be on Penny Arcade TV and we'll be showcasing a lot of what we think are our best reviews as the weeks roll by, some of which are extended edits especially for PA. We're also thinking about providing PA exclusives too, just cause we can. Most of all, we're keeping our ears open to what you think of the show and the reviews, so please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. The show may just be two amateurs with a camera in sometimes dingy London digs, but our ambition knows (almost) no bounds.
So thanks very much for watching, agilemania (and everybody else), and your feedback is really important to us. We've been doing this for about nine months now, but we always want to hear from people, we're open to new ideas and, most of all, we want to talk about games. All the time.
I love Shut Up and Sit Down. Really glad about this!
I feel the exact opposite way. What I really like about SUSD is that they talk about what makes the game fun for them, or not - and most importantly, why. They do play through the games they showcase and explain how they work. They provide game reviews and analytic insights that are not provided by watching non-gamers struggle though a game of Settlers like on Tabletop. Their love of the hobby and the special joy boardgames bring them shines through their show is for me what makes it so enjoyable.
So, Paul and Quinns, keep up the excellent work and the comedy bits.
@agilemania
This is actually spliced from the first episode of the second season, and is not the first episode ever as you've discovered. As a result, you don't get to see their introductions. This clip also cut out the introduction to this episode which set up Quinns' drunken crawl to the store, which unfortunately was the setup for the joke.
Part of understanding the beauty of SU&SD is understanding what they're going for. It's inspired by the amateur but enthusiastic video game show Consolevania. Rather than bore the audience by explaining each and every single rule, like some many other board game reviewers, they try to convey the experience of the game. You shouldn't be able to walk away ready to play the game, but you should walk away from it with a better appreciation for the love and enthusiasm they have for board games, and hopefully inspiration to pick this game up. I love this show because it doesn't waste my time explaining every card and component, I know how to read rulebooks. Instead it reminds me why I love boardgames so much, and gets me excited to add yet another to my collection.
@Paul
Hope the issues with work/internet are getting sorted out! Loved the podcast in the meantime. After Fiasco/Munchhausen, do you guys have plans for future RPG reviews?
welcome to penny arcade @Paullicino and Quinns. i think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
edit: @Paullicino - if youre ever interested in dropping in, we've got a nice board games discussion over in CF
Thanks! I'm already spying on it. And to answer your question, @Endaro, I'm not quite sure yet. We didn't originally start SU&SD to report on roleplaying games, even though we both play quite a bit (usually in the same group together). Both Fiasco and Baron are a bit different, though, and if there are any others that we think suit, we'll definitely cover them.
granted, the focus is typically on standard role playing game systems and card games, but it is a welcoming thread in a forum that's allowed to go off topic.
Welcome to PA!
It figures we had to have guests over when the family is arguing about a japanese tentacle-rape card game :-\. Any other day of the week and it would have been about how great Space Alert and Citadels are!
THIS IS WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS!
But if it doesn't, we won't hold it against you! Seriously, we aren't the type to get mad. Also, criticism is a healthy thing to hear sometimes.
I'm definitely looking forward to more! How often will this be airing on PATV? Is there any kind of set schedule yet?
There's also an entire tabletop and board gaming subforum. I actually first heard about SUSD there, where the show is really highly regarded.
I'm with you. I'd rather hear how a game feels and what's fun about it than just have someone explain the mechanics. If it sounds fun from the high-level explanation, I'll learn the specifics when I play it myself.
your = belonging to you
their = belonging to them
there = not here
they're = they are
