How to promote a web series/company in it's infancy?

Hey guys,

Straight to business, a few friends and I have started making a tabletop wargaming themed talk series on youtube, with the eventual intention of forming a small games publishing company and branching out to the general tabletop games world. Each of us brings a certain bit of expertise to the table, but one thing that we're having a little trouble with is getting the name of the channel out there and getting a viewer base of more than a small handful of people. We've been at it a little more than six months with the youtube series, and we have a little over 100 subscribers, and while we're proud of that, we know that we'd need more than that for any of our long-term goals to come to light.

I want to be clear that I'm not trying to plug the channel - I've been around long enough to know that doing that gets a paddling around here, and double checked the rules to be certain. I've put the link in my signature, that's that. What I AM doing is trying to see if any of you gents have any experience with this kind of thing, or know more about this kind of promotion. Here is what we already do, for reference:

-Any time there's a new episode of the show (Touching Base), I post it to my personal facebook. We do an episode once a month, as it's difficult to have enough to talk about more often than that.

-Other gaming-themed videos are uploaded semi-regularly, mostly by our Veteran member, as he's the most well versed in video editing and production.

-We have our videos posted on Miniwargaming.com

Aside from this, all I can think of is maybe a twitter account and a facebook page for the channel, but would that really help us reach more people in this early stage?

I appreciate any and all advice you guys can give.

It certainly won't do anything to hurt, and having something that your fans can retweet / share with the name of the group / channel on it rather than your personal name is potentially more likely to have people take a look, or at least help with getting the name out there as people will be seeing it.

Another thing that can be worth considering is your own website, or at least a blog for the project, write up some thoughts, give some behind the scenes stuff, some bios, and have links to the new videos and your youtube channel, this gives something a bit more searchable (especially if you can successfully do some SEO stuff with it) and might help to draw some more people in.

@Fyndir, we do have plans to get a website up and running, and we've reserved the domain name and whatnot, we just haven't got much to put up there yet. I'll probably put together the group's facebook by the end of the week, too.

@chrishallett83, I'm not sure if you're serious, and if you are, what we'd even do to DO something like that.

    Email him.

"Hey Khoo, check out our shit, we want to put it on PATV."

I don't know him other than being facebook friends, but he really seems like a straight up dude. Like, out of the thousands of people on the forums who have interacted with him, not a single person has a bad thing to say about him.

Well that's cool. I'd feel a bit weird approaching him out of the blue like that in the state we're currently in - the only thing we've really got to show for our efforts is six episodes of Touching Base (which aren't really up to the PATV standard, at least in my opinion), and some side videos of whatever discussions one of us wanted to have.

But yanno, we're having a meeting amongst the four of us this sunday to discuss future plans for the company, and I'll bring this up to the others. If they like the idea, or even just don't HATE it, then I'll go for it.

Approaching people out of the blue is a main thing you'll need to get over if you're serious about promoting your work.
Advertising at your local gaming shop wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Spool, thats actually a good idea, considering even with our small viewer base we've already brought that shop a little extra business. And it's not so much that I dislike approaching people out of the blue as much as I'm never quite sure when its appropriate to do so.

id also say youre probably safe posting links to your videos, if the content in the video is relevant to the conversation, in some of the tabletop threads. check out CF, or the topical threads in D&D/SE and be an active voice in them.

Ask a mod in the forum you're posting in before you do this.

Also don't necropost old threads. You could have asked that question here. :P
