    It was AWESOME.

My brother and I were on one of those in the wee hours of the morning as well. It was nice. Especially since I had just been murdered earlier in the day, and proceeded to respawn in a very close area where I could move in behind the guy that murdered me. Turns out he had the GD Anti Material rifle. And he never heard me coming. Now I have it. And close to 200 rounds for it. I have been ruining peoples shit with it ever since. And the best part is, pretty much all of my kills with it have NOT been unprovoked. I actually shot a dude in his shin while he was on the run and it killed him about 2 seconds later. Yay! Talk about beast. I may actually cry if I get killed while I still have ammo for this beast :P

What's the GD anti materiel rifle?

The only .50 rifle that should be spawning is the M107. The other isn't accessible at the moment (heli crash).

Have they patched this recently? Or is it in the same alpha-wallhacker-zombie-lose-stuff-in-ocean state as before?

Also in case you guys were interested, Zombi U was just announced as a Wii U title that also features "permadeath" consequences. Shameless plug for thread.

"God damn" and the m107 is the one he had. The point is hitting someone with the m107 is a guaranteed kill, pretty much anywhere, from what I've experienced. Which makes sense for an Anti Material (which is what it claims it is, unless I hallucinated that part).

Is that standard nomenclature? You can hardly blame me for not knowing what the hell you're talking about, "GD" could mean anything mate.

Still, extremely rare. Even the ammo. I'm quite interested in how he managed to find 200 rounds for the thing without some kind of shenanigans going on.

well in the single day I had it, I found 3 or 4 mags for it. thats 30-40 rounds. Honestly wouldn't take long if you had a tent to put them into while you were waiting on the gun itself to actually spawn. I've passed up a LOT of those mags in all of my playsessions, so if I had been stockpiling them somewhere I could have acquired just as many as he did. Just a matter of actually taking the time to do it.

And I wasn't blaming you for not knowing? All I did was answer your question, sweet cheeks. :P And where I am from it actually is standard nomenclature for when people don't want to actually SAY it, but still want it implied. Go God Fearin' rednecks!

Rifle out and ready at all times, except when I've agro'd zombies. Then I run to the nearest building, pull out my M1911 and brain them.
When the danger is over, I immediately switch back to the rifle.

But you do understand that people who aren't from bumfuck county, USA aren't going to know that right?

I mean, your sarcasm implies otherwise.

Now we've got that over with...

Never seen a single M107 magazine in my travels... I know that doesn't mean shit, but it is pretty rare. 200 rounds is an ALICE pack full, that takes a lot of gathering at 0.96% a time, even if you're scumming the shit out of spawns.

Do you mean like zombie infected or just sick? I've heard of one or two people that have gotten regular sick, but never gotten sick myself. Come across antibiotics a handful of times, but never bothered taking it. I dunno if you can even get zombie infected; I've certainly never heard of it.

Heck, the only time my temperature has even dropped noticeably (which is one way to get sick) is when I had to swim for about 15 minutes due to some poor decisions on my part; even then, my temp didn't get anywhere near the danger zone.

I know of some people who got sick when temperature was first patched in. It was bugged and went down super quickly. Getting infected just makes you lose some blood and goes away when you log off (I assume that'll be fixed at some point).

Nah, not really. The only study you could really do would be "see how fast people will start killing random strangers when there's absolutely no way to punish bad behavior and stealing is better than playing normally" along with the why of what makes that happen.

But since we all know the answers are "really fast" and "because people are dicks", there wouldn't be much point to the study anyway.

Hey guys look what rocket wore to E3. For sale soon he says. I want 2.

    HSykA.jpg

Also a fan chatted him up. this is the results. Via reddit.
Taken from this thread over at Something Awful. I take no credit for this other than simply putting it on here from browsing SA, I am not the friend he mentions, just a lurker.

"Hey, I was at E3 today and met Rocket, the developer of this mod. I talked to him for about five minutes about the mod, so I'm just gonna go through how the conversation went.

I first addressed him by saying that I love his mod, and that he should never stop punishing the carebears who want it to be made into a 'fun' game. He laughed, clearly loving that sentiment. I first asked him if he was going to get a team to help him out. He responded that Bohemia Interactive is very supportive of games that don't really have any marketability or exposure, and is willing to take risks in this way on games that may or may not clearly make money right away. I agreed, considering that Arma is basically a simulation engine and not necessarily a game. Because of this attitude, he said, he has been instructed directly to stop his work as a multiplayer designer so that he can focus exclusively on Day Z, and that he believes that Day Z is the first step towards Bohemia gearing up to make it into a full standalone game out of recognition for the opportunity to make something very different and the clear interest people have in it. He went on to say that it being a standalone title is important if only for the sake of consistency and ease of play, as mods are not the most stable or easy-to-use games, and that the only determining factor for the mod's future is the stability of the unpredictable fanbase.

I told him that the fans are playing it in droves, and with great fervor, even in spite of its clearly-alpha state; in fact, on that note, the forums are blowing up with "WHERES ROCKET" and bug reports while he's here at E3. He laughed and said he's been trying to not visit the forums while he's gone cuz he knows he's gonna get pissed. I then went ahead and asked him if he thought the mod would end up on Arma 3. He said he'd already sort of ported it to try it out (!!!), and that it works great. The main reason he "released" Day Z so early as an alpha was to allow for it to be stress-tested, as it is primarily a network-based game. At this juncture, I asked if he saw it ending up with more players-per-server in the future. He said DEFINITELY, that it's been tested internally and he thinks it could handle between 100-200 players easily (!!!!!). The thought of the anti-bandit rage this would induce gave me a semi. Anyway, he said that the engine was developed for such incredible strains, and that such numbers are in fact a natural fit.

I asked him if he thought he'd be doing away with 'meta' elements, such as server-wide chat and in-game player lists. He said not only is he doing this for sure, but that he's only waiting on the next beta patch of Arma 2 and then it is definitely happening. This excited me greatly. At this point, opportunely enough, I noticed his shirt. He said he'd had a bunch made, but that they didn't ship in time for the show so he had a small batch printed up when he got here so he could wear one. Said he took the idea from 4chan. I asked him if he'd let 'them' know about it yet, and by 'them' that I meant the entire internet. He said no, so I said "well shall we?""

I'd say, oh, probably a 7 on the STALKER scale. No anomalies and the only two enemies are zombies and other people, but plenty of "eeeh new gun!", looking at any cluster of structures with suspicion, and alpha-related goofy things that would be right at home in the Zone.

A solid 10 on the oh-shit-o-meter when things get nasty, though. But also like STALKER, there's plenty of dead time in which nothing happens and you spend a lot of that time thinking about what might be about to happen. Nothing quite comparable to the tension of going into a grocery store surrounded by zombies while it's getting dark outside and seeing somebody crouch-running in your direction and you don't know if they've seen you yet or if they're deliberately hunting you in the dark.

Heck, even coming out of the treeline into a fairly popular area is tense, even if you're reasonably sure nobody is around.

So if one were to wish to enter this world not completely alone, but with a team focused on survival, how would one go about doing so?

Well, after a few days worth of playing, I finally got my PVP cherry popped by the first actual person I've seen in the game (I play alone on low pop servers to get acclimated). I was somewhere in the SE running through mountains attempting to get to Elekro. I found a gas station and thought there might be a chance at a map inside (at least that's what I've read) so I decided to sneak in and take a look inside. The place was pretty well surrounded, so I stayed put for a few minutes just waiting for zombies to clear out a good window when I heard rustling. Since I'm new and had never seen another actual player, it took about a 2 seconds before I was able to put together that the noises were player footsteps. By the time my "Oh shit" alarm went off I was being shot at by someone at the other entrance to the building. I was dead before I could get a shot off.

Seems like a decent game/mod. I love the exploring element and the overall setting, but the older I get the less I actually enjoy PVP. Because of that, I should prob just bow out before I get frustrated and stick to my carebear SP open world games. Ha.

Edit: I also admit, part of the problem was probably due to playing alone. Still, I only had 1 death to zombies, 1 to players and half a dozen to falling through floors, pushed through walls/off catwalks, etc. I'll prob come back once it gets a few more patches under it's belt.

You would have to have a map handy in a browser window. You'd all spawn in different locations. You'd need to pay attention to where the game says you are when you spawn in the bottom right corner of the screen. You'd need to designate a rally point and then navigate your ways there independantly.

That's really the only way to "group" in this game. It's easier if you have some kind of voice comms going, like teamspeak or ventrillo.

The best way, I suppose, is to hop on team speak, and see who's on. From there, find out where they are, where you are, and how best to quickly and safely meet up. The map is huge, and it helps if you know how to get around, or have equipment like compasses and stuff that make it easier to head in the right direction. Really though it's mostly just getting onto teamspeak and coordinating from there. I'm Australian so I can't comment on peak play times though. I can only ever catch people in their last couple hours of play.
