I'd just like to make a point about this game that's probably been made before. It's a really excellent study in genre. Sure, it's derivative in a lot of ways, but character and setting can make up for technical and gameplay failings. It's literally transports you to a place that most American gamers have ever been, and tells a story we probably have all heard before (Essentially Chinese 'The Departed') and I love it for it. It reminds me of a quote from almost famous, where Lester Bangs says "The Guess Who" had the courage to be drunken idiots, and it made them poets. Sleeping Dogs has the courage to be a fun, stylish, and just-enough-over-the-top action game, to exceed expectations and avoid the GTA clone monicker by being it's own thing.
On a second note: Some General questions:
1. Does Emma Stone show up again after that *one* date I went on where she had me take photos of her.
2. You know that mission where you catch the Karoke Broad cheating on you? If I didn't date notping does that mission go a different way.
3. Are "Event" Missions the ones with the little yellow circle and a black outline of a person in them? Do those only pop up when you're near them, or are all available ones shown on the map at all times.
4. I just finished "The Wedding" mission. How far along am I in the game?
On the one hand, I'm proud of finding the remaining few events without a guide. On the other..... I spent 4 hours just driving around!?
See, I'd found all but one of them before finishing, so I wasn't going to drive around the entire map looking for just that one. It would've driven me insane.

1. Nope. I have no clue why they got a name actress to be her VA.
2. That mission only pops up once you've finished the Not Ping date, so it's not possible. Similarly, the Not Ping date pops up straight after the Karaoke date.
3. No, those are 'favors' and will pop up on your map regardless of where you are, though I don't believe they're all unlocked from the beginning. The event missions are a) the yellow shields that only appear on your mini-map when you're close to them and b) the blue shield drug busts.
4. I can't remember exactly because there were a couple of times I'd go off and solely do side missions (races, favors and so on) but maybe a third of the way through it?
It's literally transports you to a place that most American gamers have ever been, and tells a story we probably have all heard before (Essentially Chinese 'The Departed') and I love it for it.
The Departed was a remake of a Hong Kong movie called Infernal Affairs.

I am aware it was based on that, I was just making a point that most American audiences have likely never heard of that movie or have come in contact with hard-boiled gritty noir from Chinese Cinema.
Also, pretty bummed about mz. stone only being in the game for like, 6 seconds.

And done! My last act for 100% was smashing @minor incident's Clean Driver score by a whole damn minute.
The entire time I played this game, "minor incident" would appear whenever I hit a reasonable speed. Every time I came close, I'd fuck up. Felt so good to finally surpass you and become the road master hahahaha. >:3
and beated, what a great game
only complaint, all the girlfriend missions just disappeared and around 75% of the way through I got a phone call from Not Ping where she asked me to do something but no mission about it ever occurred??
You should be able to find your way around that problem with this handy guide: Sleeping Dogs Cheats.
as far as I know I did all of the not ping missions as soon as I could (ie I have security cameras visible on my map). it's bizarre though because I definitely got a call from not ping on the phone hours later while driving around but nothing came of it and I forget exactly what she said.
If you'd done all the tiffany missions, then the call is
her dumping you
uh.
oh
ok well that makes more sense, damn i wish i had actually heard it properly

Is anybody here going to NYCC? Not a loaded question, just wondering.
Its a little more than a bus ride for me, from here in the UK.
And you can't ask that without having everyone expecting something big!
I'm a-cookin' up something... I'll tell you what it is if/when it's all 100% locked down. Are you going to the EG Expo? I'm planning on being there and will hopefully be able to bring some swag as well.

Man, I need to finish this game. I went back to Dragon's Dogma this week.

Has anyone heard anything about how the cockfighting works in this game? It's the only reasonable way to get the gambler stat gold and it seems to be completely random! Except of course, it's always the bird that I don't pick that wins. @Monkeythumbz, is this really how this was supposed to play out? Everything else in this game is great, but holy crap this one thing is super annoying.

There's one that pays out 100000 HK on a win, so make sure you're going there. It's at the Docks to the West. Save after each win, reload after each loss. I've read that you're best with the underdogchicken, one that has a victory but less than the other, but personally?
Bet on the green one every time. That guy got best bird. ;D

I bet on this bird five times in a row.
It lost every match.
(I also didn't consider the save trickery, so I lost out on a bunch of money. Which....isn't a big deal really.)

Strikes me you *might* just be unlucky, champ. I put some money down on a few cockfights the other evening and I won every single time, even when I was trying to lose! I'm pretty sure it's utterly random... but tbh I'm not 100% sure. If it's really bugging you, send me a PM and it'll remind me to ask the Producer tomorrow AM when I'm in the office..
Don't get me wrong, I loved EVERYTHING else about the game. I finally got the gold stat for gambling and 100% the game by just saving and reloading if I lost the fight.
Perhaps I made it sound worse than it is simply because that was the only thing in the game I was focused on at the time. Now that this little thing is done with, I can look back and see how well done the rest was.
Was chatting on Steam with gibbed earlier, who has coded modding tools and utilities for games like the Saints Row series, Far Cry 2, and dozens more:
IdolNinja: have you checked out sleeping dogs?
[TEAM YOU DIED] Rick: yeah
[TEAM YOU DIED] Rick: awesome game
IdolNinja: any chance we might see some mod tools for it?
IdolNinja: I was kind of bummed that my save got corrupted when they changed the dlc around
[TEAM YOU DIED] Rick: i've been writing tools
[TEAM YOU DIED] Rick: but then I got distracted by dark souls
IdolNinja: originally the preorder had the triad pack but then they changed it to gsp and police protection
[TEAM YOU DIED] Rick: woe is the life of a game modder during busy game season
[TEAM YOU DIED] Rick: but yeah I have boatloads of code written for sleeping dogs already
IdolNinja: that's fantastic. would love to dig in there and see what I can mess with

Hey, so Sleeping Dogs has been nominated in the Best Action-Adventure Game short-list in the incredibly prestigious Golden Joystick awards. As you're no doubt aware, these are the annual videogame awards voted for by gamers for gamers.
Sleeping Dogs shares the category nomination with some other seriously amazing games, so please cast your vote for us only if you think we're worthy of the award. In any event, you really should be voting anyway so that the overall community can make its collective opinion known. You can cast your votes by following this link: www.goldenjoystick.com
I don't normally throw in for that sort of thing, but I went in and voted for Sleeping Dogs because it's just an amazing game. Bit disappointed that it was only up for Best Action-Adventure, but with any luck it'll win that, because it definitely deserves the recognition.
In other news, after losing the cockfights five times last time I went in, I went back to the docks, bet $75,000 and won the first one just like that. Got both the trophy for winning one and for winning more than $50,000 from a single win. Felt good.
Thanks for your support, Darth_Mogs! Glad to hear fighting with cocks feels good.
So are you the guy I can complain to over the shit treatment New Zealand is given with Square Enix PSN releases? No Vagrant Story, Soul Reaver, Blood Omen or Fear Effect 1 and that was just off the top of my head. Square Enix Europe are the worst.

I'm afraid I'm not that guy - I only work on Square Enix London Studios titles like Just Cause 2, Heroes of Ruin and Sleeping Dogs. If you want to reach that guy, you can do so on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/SQUARE_ENIX_EU

Yeah, I'll co-sign that. It's been a while since I've had this much fun with a sandbox title. They almost could've made a whole game out of just the freerunning and melee combat, called it Mirror's Edge: Now in Hong Kong. Great stuff in any case, and it really should've been up for GOTY.
Also, I'll have to give cockfighting a serious try next time around. I needed a way to finance my impulse-buying habit. "Hey man, you want this $10,000 HKD wall scroll for that apartment you never, ever visit because you like the central one better?" HELL YES I WANT THAT I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY
I just beat this, and I felt the ending was pretty satisfying. There was a bunch of loading inbetween the final scenes, so it sort of broke up the drama of it all, but it's to be expected on the 360 hardware I suppose. I wish the Story-Driven DLC had been announced like, months ago, as I (and everyone else if GameStop is to be believed) traded the game in after I beat it. If I knew there would be more story, I wouldn't have. But ces't la vie.
I think I *liked* this game more than GTA IV and it's about on par with Saints Row 2 in terms of my favorite sandbox game on consoles this generation. The setting and atmosphere really made it feel different and exciting, even though it contained lots of features from other games. I don't know how well the game has sold, and I'm sure all the trade-ins aren't helping matters, but I for one certainly hope it gets itself a proper sequel that can be developed from the ground up and with less behind-the-scenes turmoil. That my friends, is a game you won't want to trade in.
