We've had threads where you talk about your campaign settings before and a few on creating homebrew material and dungeon building, this is a nicer place for all of these topics to live together, mod-willing.

Dragonlance, Eberron and Transhuman Space are all well and good but you know you want to make your own world. I bet you've got a pile of failed attempts stashed away and, if you're lucky, a couple that made it to the table. It can all be a bit daunting but if we pool our resources I think the global standard for homebrew worlds will slightly increase. That'd be nice.

Currently working on two settings myself. One's going nicely and one I never expect to finish, but I think I've learned a thing or two in working on them. I'll get things started with the first three tips that come to my mind.

1. If you're going to make a subrace that has the prefix of "Dark", "Sea" or "Wood" you'd better give it a twist.

2. Here's one that worked better than I could have imagined. Stuck for inspiration when creating a culture or nation? Hit wikipedia's random page function until you get a place, preferably a country or larger city/region. Now, take what comes to mind when you think of this place (a bit of research may be necessary for some) and turn it on its head. My work-in-progress campaign world ended up with opposites of Switzerland and Liberia, but you'd be amazed how subtly it can be used. A great starter when you've hit the block. The same could be done for individuals or creatures, I would suppose.

3. Get a buddy in on it. I'm working on the first collaborative campaign setting I've done with another forumer here and having that extra brain to bounce ideas off really raises the quality level up. There are lots of things that would have gotten through "the filter" if I was working on this alone and now I see that the world is better off without them. Great ideas come out when you're streaming your train of thought to someone too.

So there we go, share your own tips or keep us posted on what you're working on. And here's the lodge we'll be using.

My idle work on a campaign setting that I rarely feel like working on (but every once in awhile, I get the urge to add a little something in.)
