DOES NO ONE THINK OF REBEL ONE?!

Rookie One (was that his name? Who the fuck cares?) got kind of a short stick, I guess.

He--what? Magically walks through all those battles where every Rebel pilot not named Luke or Wedge gets their asses stomped by the boys in black, then becomes a Jedi and everything is hunky dory? I think that's what happens to him?

Shit, even his Imperial counterpart from TIE Fighter has a more interesting literature follow up. As well as a complete name (Marek Steele or something? Which you must pronounce "Stay-Lay" or it sounds like a bad porn actor psuedonym or a major character in a blaxploitation film).

I'm calling it. "Death by Jedi enrollment." The death of more than a few interesting Star Wars persons, I bet.

Rookie One got a proper ending in Rebel Assault II. Stopped the Empire, got the girl. He's all set.

The person you're thinking of Keyan Farlander from X-Wing. He actually has a pretty cool story in that it's basically what would have happened if Luke didn't have Obi-Wan. Also Mon Mothma totally hit on him one time.

I loved that part of NJO. While NJO had high and lows, there were a lot of badass moments. My absolute favorite part was at the final battle when Wedge goes "Screw this commanding crap" and jumps into a fighter to help in the fight. When control asks what his callsign is, he thinks for a moment and replies with "Vader."

One of my favorite parts of KOTOR is the lower levels on Taris. If this is a whole game of that kind of atmosphere it will be something to look forward too.

Still think the ending to the Force Unleashed DLC should have been Starkiller, triumphant, standing over the emperor's corpse or something.

Then, as he's doing an evil laugh?

    BOOM. His head explodes.

And we cut to Sev with a smoking sniper rifle.

As for this, thought it was Star Wars bounty hunter GTA first time I heard about it, which sounded like it could be fun. Uncharted?

    More... skeptical.

So many of these problems could be avoided if they didn't insist on forcing every new game into established canon. Let players do whatever and there's no reason it should have actual consequences in the EU. That was something that made Rebellion fun. Force-sensitive Lando for life.

I hope so. TFU coulda been not TFU at all, and about a Wookie freedom fighter instead. Coulda been awesome, but they had to get Lucas' input. I just hope they havent had to run to him for approval on every little thing.

I read an article on Kotaku about why this game doesn't have you play as a jedi. the first sentence was something to the effect of "we're not saying playing as jedi in star wars games is an over-saturated market," and then I stopped reading.

I'm interested in this if only because it's kinda like uncharted and the last two games of those series had awesome narrative without the meandering I always get lost in with free roaming games. The plot was always there driving you forward and that's what I want from my games... plus I like star wars.

I'm always interested in new Star Wars IP's, and this looks pretty sweet.

I hope they innovate on some third person mechanics, like the prior pointed out fact that all cover is chest high, moving you linearly down a narrow hallway.

Completely destructible environments would be pretty sweet. Instead of just rolling from cover point to cover point it would be cool to be able to cave the roof in on some dudes and just bounty hunter jetpack your way over.

I remember reading the script and thinking that there was a chance for RotS to not be a bleh film. Needless to say I kinda kicked myself for getting my hopes up.

It was kinda creepy watching RotS on release day. Nobody was hype, nobody said anything during the movie, and when it ended there was this palpable air that was like we all just watched two and a half hours of a dog being ran over repeatedly. Nobody said anything as we left the theater. Like I said, just kinda creepy.

I'm still convinced that before every scene in that movie, Lucas had Hayden Christensen pull a random emotional descriptor out of a hat. 'The cold, cutting shame of acknowledging a distinct feeling of joy upon hearing that your bitchy ex-girlfriend was mauled by a bear in front of a local boy scout troop,' or 'the most intense ennui a Costco employee is capable of feeling,' or 'cyborg penis envy.' Christensen was then to (poorly) encapsulate that emotion, regardless of whatever the context of any given scene was. It's the only explanation for Anakin's character arc.

I think the only real explanation is that Hayden Christiansen and Kristen Stewart are actually the same person. He simply got a sex change in order to get away from the stigma of the prequels.

According to PunkBoy, it unfolds a little different (that being said, it still shit, it just thankfully doesn't involve the Jedi). There's a reason why he's so damn forgettable, even when compared to his bad guy counterpart (who apparently even appears in literature dealing with the whole Vong problem, hah!).

His name definitely doesn't help. Poor guy. Then again, TIE Fighter was a better game even outside the narratives told.

Kotaku says that the game is on hold after speaking with "three unrelated sources familiar with game development at LucasArts." Lucasarts itself says that they have "been working diligently to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that the new Star Wars movies present" and that "Star Wars 1313 continues production" but whatever, we'll see.

  • LucascraftLucascraft Registered User regular
They're trying so hard to make the concept of 1313 into something important. And I just don't think it is.

I don't watch the Clone Wars cartoon, but I guess recently they had a 1313 introductory episode, or perhaps it's coming soon.

Anyway, I thought the idea of a TPS action game set in the Star Wars universe was cool, but the setting is highly irrelevant, and the fact that all this side fiction and everything is popping up about 1313 makes me believe that the project is getting lost in it's own shadow.

  • Skull2185Skull2185 Registered User regular

    Same here.

The Clone Wars episode didn't go to 1313 itself, but the levels around it (1312 and 1315, I believe). The idea was the same, though: Coruscant, for some inexplicable reason, has miles of dark slums/ghettos. Yay, I guess.

As someone who wasn't impressed by the trailer (most TPS action games haven't evolved much past Sands of Time in terms of gameplay, or the original Uncharted in terms of scripted set pieces), I can't say it's a big loss. Sucks for the people involved, certainly, but it looked utterly forgettable to me.

TFU seemed like an excuse just to fling a bunch of stormtroopers around with da force, even though technically, according to the "plot", they were supposed to be working for you.

Which was fine 15 years ago, when flinging around stormtroopers was still fairly novel. But that's essentially what every Star Wars game has done in the period. Including some of the Rogue Squadron games.

    Synthesis on
  • Skull2185Skull2185 Registered User regular
Yeah, but it was da force + euphoria engine. So sexy!

The gameplay in both TFU games was decent, but good god, that story... I'm sure they did Lucas proud.

The story of TFU was worse than even the terrible-ness of the new trilogy.

I actually thought TFU was pretty terrible as a whole. Gameplay included. They keep telling you that you're this ultra force wielding badass, and then they throw stormtroopers at you with force resistant shields, and all sorts of tech that doesn't even really exist during that time period, and it just makes for an extremely unsatisfying experience.

Shadows of the Empire was fine. Plus the snow speeder level in that was the entire inspiration and foundation for the Rogue Squadron games.

And as much as cover based shooters seem to get a bad rap, because chest high walls in literally every place ever don't make a lot of sense, I still really enjoy the more strategic and realistic gunfights that they provide. First person shooters are unrealistic because that isn't the way gun warfare works. At least, not since like the civil war.

The idea behind 1313 is pretty sound. Let us play as a dude who is good at guns and ranged murder scenarios, set in the Star Wars universe.

The thing is, that story can take place anywhere. They don't need to create a new substrata of slums and jizz all over the place with how incredibly clever they are.

Also how is this game like uncharted? I see that a lot. I wasn't interested enough in the PS3 and now that we're almost at the PS4 and that's doing nothing for me either I'll probably still never touch the franchise outside of at other people's houses, so I don't really see the comparison. It also doesn't help that people say that as a good and bad thing...

edit: when playing it briefly nothing about it seemed remarkable. it just felt like a cover-based shooter. I doubt that's the comparison.

For me, the comparison comes from the combination of cover shooter + over-the-top props/set pieces. The part at the end of the 1313 trailer where the player has to hold onto the falling speeder/transport reminded me of Uncharted 2's opening bit with the train. So clearly designed to "wow" but comes across as artificial.

When I first heard of this game I thought it was an allusion to or at least drew inspiration from Necromunda. The idea that all of these elite aristocrats had built this mega city that dwarfed the planet upon itself. Pushing the have-nots into the ghettos beneath their palaces without light or hope.

Then like, it's just kneeling behind chest-high-walls and shooting your blaster.

Man, I can't be the only one who wants to know about the random smuggler trying to make a living or the mercenary who works for the empire only to see the evil shit go down? I'm not the only one who thought TIE Fighter was great?

Fuck. Give me any game examining what it would actually be like to live in the Star Wars Universe if you are not a jedi / hot shot pilot / rich person and I'll eat it up.
