guys my 360 is dead i think it is dead it had three red lights and then it just turned off and now it won't turn back on and it has a disc in there what do i do guys what do i do what the fuck do i do
cry, throw a fit of rage, cry again... and finally send it to microsoft and get robbed of a hundred dollars. I love my 360 but I havn't had so many DRE errors from a single new machine ever.
But I suggest that you do not start opening it up. That is insta-void on any warranty. And they can tell, there are breakable tabs that snap off if you open the case.
Turn it off, let it cool down and try again, there's a possibility it's overheated.
Opening it up yourself is definitely a no-no, there aren't tabs that snap off, there are some stickers that are IMPOSSIBLE to put back on correctly.
Check that the video cable is working too, if the 360 detects there's no cable connected, it'll give you the red lights. Try a friends cable just in case.
Remain calm. Give it an hour, come back, check the cords, and hit the open disc tray button. Now, it should pop the disc out for about 30 seconds. Plenty of time.
If you end up getting a new system from MS, buy an extended warranty. It's only $30 for a year. When you drop $500 or whatever on one piece of electronics, $30 to insure it isn't much to ask.

Apparently, the warranty is re-extended for a year when you get a new system.
I got mine replaced in november and called recently. They said I was covered until November somethingth-2007.

Er... that's standard procedure for any decent RMA in the tech world.
Guy might have been suggesting to extend it to 2 years
My second 360 died recently... i hope that 3rd time is a charm. If you dont have warranty ask to purchase one from the rep for 30 bucks. If you have a 360 there is 70% chance it will break.
If you had to use your 360 warrenty to replace your console you may have noticed that none of your purchased Xbox Live Marketplace content (Live Arcade, Themes, Picture Packs) can be accessed unless you are online (connected to internet) and logged on with the profile you orignially bought the content with. Other gamertags on your console will also not be able to access the content whether or not you are connected to the internet or not.
When you purchase Marketplace content the content is liscensed to your console in two ways:
1. By the gamertag making the purchase
2. By the console serial number (NOT the HDD) downloading the content
The reason it works this way is so that you cannot pass purchased content to your friends (you have to be there at his/her house and logged on with your own gamertag OR using the console you bought the content on)
The problem with this system is that if your console breaks and you get a new one via warrenty the only way for MS to check to make sure you are liscensed to be using marketplace content you've purchased is by checking your gamertag when you are connected to the internet as shown in number #1 above. The new console you have has a different serial number from the one you originally purchased the content, so #2 above can no longer be used for proof of liscense.
This is a problem for some people who either a. play offline alot, or b. have multiple family members with gamertags.
The long and short of it is this: If you have had to replace your console, you can call Microsoft and complain that you are no longer able to access your purchased Marketplace content when offline. Microsoft will refund you all the points (they'll give you redemption codes for the value of the points) you used to purchase the original content.
The rep I spoke with stated that I could either:
a. Put the points on my wife's silver profile so I can redownload all the games thereby "liscensing" them all to the console so they can be played by all profiles on the console as well as when offline.
or
b. Use the points to buy new games.
Keep in mind that if I do decide to use the points for new games, the "old" marketplace content I own can still be used when online (internet connected) with the gamertag I purchased them with.
I recieved redemption codes for 4000 marketplace points today and can confirm that Microsoft will indeed do this.
Mind you if you used a Best Buy/other retail store warrenty it's going to be more of a hassle (providing proof ie. console serial number of both the defective and new console and a photocopied reciept proving you used a retail store warrenty). If you used the MS warrenty they have it all on their system and will give you no hassle at all. I called, they moved the call to "escelation", a rep called me back and said I would be called within 72 hours with redemption codes for the value of the content and they did indeed call back with the codes.
Anyways since I know there are some PA folks that have had defective consoles I thought you guys might be interested in knowing this.
I should also add that the rep mentioned that they are doing this "quietly" for anyone whose console broke, if that person calls in and complains. They are well aware of the flaw with the liscensing system when it comes to 360's that have been replaced.
Goddammit. Every time I seriously think about getting a 360 a thread like this comes up. Plus a co-worker just told me that, out of all of his 360-owning friends, all but one of them have had the red ring of death.

I'm planning on buying a 360 in the next few months, and this shit doesn't make me feel good about it. However, it helps that the only guy I know with a 360 bought it on launch day and has had no problems.
I've been wondering about this for a while: Does your gamertag have to be logged into XBox Live for the downloaded content to be accessable? Or just logged in to the console? My 360 got borked recently, and I've since received the replacement without too much trouble. I seem to be able to use my old downloaded content just fine, but I'm hoping to use it offline soon.

When you buy content, it get's liscensed to
1. The console (NOT THE HDD)
2. The Gamertag making the purchase
When your 360 breaks and you get it replaced, #1 is no longer valid (you have a new 360 with a different serial #).
What this means is that the only way for MS to check you own the content is to check via the gamertag that bought it ... which means you have to be online and logged in with that gamertag.
All other Gamertags on the console will not be able to access the content, and you MUST be online with the gamertag that purchased the content.
This is a problem for folks that have multiple family members playing on one system, or for those people that can't always be online.
Call MS and complain, they will refund you your MS Funbucks. Last time around I got over 4000 points refunded to me. It's worth noting that the MS rep stated I could use those points to redownload all my stuff (reliscensing it to my console so I can play offline) OR I could use those points for new content.
In their view even though I could still play when online and logged in with my profile, in their view it was now "defective" because of the missing console liscense when they replaced my system.
One other interesting little tidbit ... if you have a friend with a 360 you can get all your marketplace content for half price, because of how the liscensing system works.
Simply download your profile onto a memory card, put the profile on your friend's 360 and download the game on his 360. This will liscense the game to HIS console, but to YOUR gamertag.
There are 2 liscenses which you and your buddy basically split.
In my case my replacement unit came with a note that all the stuff will be transfered to my new unit by the MS folks, and as soon as I plugged my HD and all my shit was there. YMMV
oh yeah, i forgot about the year extension on the warranties. and i've never had to rma anything that would have a warranty, so i didn't know about the renewal thing either. cool.
I've got a week old 360 that's getting DRE and freezing on Fight Night 3 and Fable. I am SO glad I've got the Best Buy warranty. I figure I'll wait to take it in until after the smaller chip/less heat version is common (HDMI/HDDpugrade please?).

When I first bought my 360 i got Saint's Row with it. I played the game for about a half hour then left to get some food. When I got back and started up the 360 Saint's Row was dead. The Goddamn game didn't want to go past the loading screen. I was most upset. But now me and the 360 are cool even though it destroyed my first game.

Really? That's actually interesting. I guess maybe they are/were getting tired of having to give out massive point refunds.
Have you tried unplugging your ethernet connector? Alot of people are always online so they don't realize anything has changed.

They must have started doing something different, I guess. I just unplugged my ethernet cord from the back of my 360, and I was able to play all of the XBLA games I downloaded on my old system just fine. I had to be logged into the dashboard, but I guess they must've transferred something over, because I didn't need a live connection.
I guess it makes sense. What a hassle it'd be for them if they had to deal with everyone who had a failed console demanding more points.

The only problem I had when I had to replace mine is the way the stupid iPod media playing thing is licensed means you can only download the fucking thing once.
I even emailed Microsoft support before they publicised this fact, and they just went "Hmmm, you should call us so we can make a better diagnosis." Those fuckers must have known exactly what was wrong too.
I never did get back to them once they released this tidbit of information so they could reset my count and let me actually download it.

To me, there's a Murphy's Law present here: your 360 will break at least once, and most likely never again.
How come nobody has mentioned the towel fix for the 3 red lights?
IF YOUR 360 GETS THE RED LIGHTS AND YOU CAN STILL TURN IT ON, WRAP THAT MOFO IN A TOWEL FOR LIKE AN HOUR AND THEN TAKE IT OFF AND RESET IT OR SOMETHING

Uhhhhhhh, what? Explain why this would possibly help anything, 'cause it sounds like you're trying to get (stupid) people to overheat their 360s or something by covering the case

Reading this thread is sad. I want to own one, but it's this kind of stuff that makes me think twice. It's not even the money--I shouldn't have think about a system that may or may not destroy my games.
The second these reports die down, I'll snag one.

Get a replacement.
Or buy a new one.
Or fix it yourself.
Or search on google for what do do.

$100 what
they charge me to fix it
