Best video game news resources?

Hey guys I have been out of the video game scene for several years. Now that I have more free time, I was wondering if I could some recommendations on sites and podcasts for video game related news/reviews/what have you.

I guess Joystiq is sort of unobjectionable in the same way that Shacknews is unobjectionable. As long as you stay away from places like Kotaku and Destructoid you'll do better than awful.

If we're moving past news sites to includes things like Medium Difficulty, then Sneaky Bastards and Magical Wasteland get to go on the list, and probably some others, but I assumed OP was asking for news sites in the sense of "THIS JUST IN, BUNGIE HAS ANNOUNCED HALO 4 IS JUST GOING TO BE HALO 1 AND HALO 3 ON ONE DISC" and so on.

I'm a fan of Opposable Thumbs over at Ars Technica, though we got their best writer when @Ben Kuchera moved here and started the PA Report.

But they still have some good stuff here and there.

Edit: A further note on Ars and the PA Report: The comments are 98% shitty and you can safely avoid them. I haven't seen an article yet that wasn't followed by a bunch of neckbeards whining about their bad opinions.

Rock Paper Shotgun is the best for PC news. They maintain a healthy balance of Indie and more mainstream games.

I get the rest of all my news from NeoGAF. It's a forum and has a lot of trolls due to being so huge, but they're really, really fast.

Alternatively, you can get your news from here. :P

This is not online but the magazine EDGE is for me the place for gaming info. They have been doing this for a long time and pretty much cover the whole scene.

EDIT: And they of course also have a website, but get the print magazine because it is nice. edge-online.com/

Honestly, the Industry Thread over in G&T has been my source for news. Everything and anything gets linked there. It's like a mecca. The only site I check on my own regularly is Gamasutra. And I'll vouch for it.

Rock Paper Shotgun is excellent for PC news. For general gaming news, I like Giant Bomb and Eurogamer.

Eurogamer is pretty good, as everyone has said RPS is fantastic.

GiantBomb is really the place for breaking news but their videos and podcasts are brilliant.

I tend to get a lot of news from following random videogame people on Twitter too.

Yep. In fact, Kotaku can find a way to use pictures of breasts for almost every article they write. They're really good at that.

I mean, what Esh is getting at is that if you literally just want news, Kotaku isn't bad, and in fact no site is bad, because if you ignore all the shit a site posts and just read the "X announced for release in 201X" then you'll be fine. Really, though, you can get a lot of that just from better sites, and from twitter. So really my original post was too bare: I should've mentioned twitter. Follow game developers you like on twitter, and they will tweet about games you care about, plus they'll tweet any big news. For example, here are the game devs I follow on twitter (there are obviously TONS more to follow, like Hideo Kojima or developers for whatever game you like):

Steve Gaynor is a hell of a guy. I keep failing to read his blog (hey I should do that now!) but I've heard him talk on podcasts and follow his Twitter (and have talked with him via that), and he's got a lot of insight into development and design theory. And he's generally impartial about things in a way. Not necessarily news, but great food for thought. He does hate strategy games though, fair warning. :P

Honestly, I feel like I hear about almost all of the news I'm likely to remotely care about just by reading these forums.

Andriasang is my site of choice for niche Japanese games. It's run by one guy, so there's very little BS, just gaming news.

He tends to show articles about risque LE giveaway stuff, which is common in Japan, so it can be NSFW sometimes.

Siliconera's nice too, but they've become kind of shaky lately(covering Halo and stuff, really?), and the site's popularity has drawn a lot of stupid.

Entriech

A lot of my faves have already been mentioned, such as RPS, Giant Bomb, and Medium Difficulty.

Polygon is one of the newer sites on the block. Currently hosted by the Verge, I assume they'll be moving to http://polygon.com/ eventually. They look about halfway between a magazine and a website, which is a visual aesthetic I don't see often. Two of their employees are the McElroy brothers, whom you might recognize if you enjoy the My Brother, My Brother, and Me podcast.
