How long does it take to train to walk a marathon?

I've walked a few half marathons before. The training schedule for those is pretty easy. I'd love to walk a marathon sometime next year, but I know it'll be a lot tougher since it'll be a full 20 miles longer than anything I've done before. The only training schedules I've found are for people jogging or running. Does anyone know where I could get a training schedule for walking a marathon, and how long it'll take me to prepare properly? Thanks.

Just a quick note: a full marathon is not 20 miles longer than a half marathon, it's 13.1 miles longer.

Why are you training to walk a marathon?

I'd imagine that the first thing you'll want to do is get good walking shoes. Then maybe start walking every day while adding distance each week? Unless you are extremely out of shape, walking is natural, easy, and really shouldn't take too much planning. You can always start small - say, one mile every day. Then add a mile every two weeks, and you should be golden. Taking a break once a week or so isn't a horrible idea, either.

You should clarify one point, do you mean just regular walking? Or olympic-style walking? Because there is an actual 'walk' event, with a particular technique and rules on what is and is not 'walking'.

Plan a change of socks at least once, maybe four times! But for real, it's a good idea.

This, unless you want to walk on blisters instead of feet. I've been there, it is not something I would wish on anyone.
As for the training schedule... I can't really say much about that, although depending on if you'll be taking breaks or not it'd change a fair bit. If you aren't, then Inquisitor's idea is probably the best way to go about it, albeit maybe with some numerical adjustments.

Shine is a midnight walking marathon. I did the half last year and they provided a training plan. That might be what you're looking for.

Sorry I should have clarified, the "mini marathons" I've done have been 10ks only, so 6 miles. Well, well short of an actual marathon.
