See, I try to be a generous tipper but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't primarily to avoid the social stigma of being a bad tipper and because it actually can have repercussions on subsequent service.
I understand this is mostly an American thing though as it doesn't seem to be all that common in other countries, even among the industrialized world.
So why do we do it? And why is it so uneven?
Why are tips being automatically added to what I'm getting charged at some delis for the sort of service the guys at Arby's do for free?

now watch as this thread devolves into acrimony between people who live in different countries in which it is insinuated that everyone who behaves differently from me is a bad person
what's the minimum wage relative to the cost of living where you live
people working tip-service jobs where i'm at cannot live comfortably off of minimum wage alone, so tipping is expected, and of course i tip because that's the system i'm in
I do not tip. Because it is not a thing that is done in Australia. Because the cost of paying staff a decent wage is built into the price on the menu.
Plus even though the Australian dollar is almost 1:1 to the US dollar, the Australian minimum wage is as much as 3 times that of some US states.

Because tipping in America is a broken mess of what it is supposed to be. And it's moved so far away from the original intent you can't change it.
As I am going to America later in the year I am going to be the ignorant foreigner and not tip, and when they ask for one I will tell them that even if it's just a tip, it still counts as sex.
tip: if a lock is sticking, try scribbling on the key with a pencil and putting it into the lock. the graphite dust will lubricate the pins and restore full functionality to the lock!
yeah as long as servers get two bucks an hour I'll tip unless I actually see someone spit into my food in front of me
is it bullshit, yeah, probably
I'm still not going to change it by screwing somebody out of money they count on, especially when the savings on their paycheck are incorporated, at least on some level, into the price of the meal

Yes, but not as much as I'm told is socially expected, and nine times out of ten it is absolutely because of the stigma.
I'm happy to give my barber a few extra bucks, but I generally don't have that kind of a relationship with very many people in the service industry.
I actually really like gratuity, because it takes the "how much?" out of the equation-- forces me not to be as stingy as I'd like to be (but also eats my money).

Except they won't ask for one. Any server that doesn't want to look like an idiot, anyway, will just take the loss and move on to the next table.

Well don't do THAT. It's a broken system but people don't get paid if you don't tip. I don't like being the asshole who doesn't tip!
When I lived in the US I generally just tacked 15% onto the price of everything and paid THAT, screw the service quality.

My Mom was a waitress/bartender most of her life so I always tip. I pretty much do 20% unless the service was exceptionally good or bad. Then I'll knock it up to 30% or down to 10%.
I don't generally tip more than a buck or two at buffets though. All they do is get drinks and I'd rather do that myself honestly.
I tip almost all the time because I'm a sucker. I've stopped giving tips to my starbucks because I am always disappointed with the way they make my drinks. I am starting to question my always tip mentality though and will likely just tip at restaurants (unless the service is terrible.)

Good service tip, bad service no tip. Like the time I was at dinner with @ceres and the waiter threw something she asked for at her. Also he was rude as shit anyway. No tip.

some guy who used to be a waiter and chef got real mad when I said yeah 18% no matter the service

If someone was really bad I suppose I might not tip. However, I've never had service that bad.
if someone is very visibly trying, I'll probably drop 20% because I'm generally a nice person
but like, it'd have to catch my attention as significant above and beyond what I traditionally expect as decent service in a restaurant
it's not, you know, unreasonable... just little things like grabbing me a new knife when I drop mine on the floor without me even needing to ask first... stuff like that
the only time service was bad enough I wasn't going to tip the meal ended up on the house after all
same, but it wasn't the waitresses fault at all so we tipped anyway

i tip anywhere from 15-20% based on the service but 15% is my minimum
and i tip them because they are doing a job i wouldn't do that benefits me
i also do my best to be pleasant because all my food service and retail friends tell me it makes more of a difference than we know

unless the service is incredibly poor as a result of something the waiter does directly (i.e., not the kitchen).

yes, because I'm not an asshole
unless they were an asshole, they get a tip from me. If they were particularly awesome, they get a bigger tip. I'm not a wealthy person, but if I can't afford to tip then I probably shouldn't be going out to eat/taking the cab/getting the haircut this month either.
you're not expected to tip in China, but there are places in Shanghai and Beijing where they actually refuse to take a tip even if you offer it to them in cash and in person
(my mum and I both tried it on two separate occasions and were turned down twice! we were AMAZED!)
so what we do instead as a family is pay compliments to the restaurant manager or owner if we received excellent service and make sure the person in question is recognized for that
it's nice when we go back to a restaurant to see that someone who received good feedback from us got a promotion

When I have to go fill my own damn drink at the fountain because the waitress hasn't checked the table ever
That's bad enough.
a couple extra when i was in high school and usually knew the server or their brother/sister
tip your waitstaff, they don't make a goddamn thing without tips
If they do a good job.
Lately though I haven't had any.
I on the other hand was an excellent delivery driver.
