I have an 80GB PS3 with software-based PS2 compatibility. I recently became a Playstation Plus member and decided I needed more space on my hard drive, so I quickly ordered a nice 500GB drive from newegg which surprisingly arrived a day early. I'm currently using an external hard drive to back up everything, so that should be done in about an hour and a half according to the progress bar.
Anyway, from what I could gather from various sites on the internet, PS2 and PS1 saves are not included in this backup process. Is there an easy way for me to back these up that doesn't involve individually copying each one to a hard disk or thumb drive? I think I have something like 3 virtual memory cards worth of saves in there, plus some PS1 stuff.
Yea pretty much the only thing to do is just copy them to a hard drive or flash drive. It really won't take long at all though, especially not compared to how long it takes to back up everything else. We did the same thing last year with our 80GB BC PS3, it's pretty damn nice not having to worry about hard drive space anymore.
Well, I backed up all my PS2/PS1 data to a USB drive and an external hard drive. Opened up my PS3 tonight, put the new hard drive in, and initiated the restore process.
To my surprise, all that PS2/PS1 data copied over too. I guess I had that wrong. Maybe it just won't copy to a different PS3? Anyway, I guess this is solved. Thanks for all your help!
I have somewhat of a related question that I've been unable to find advice for. I want to download PS1 saves, in a .psv format, which should be the format that the PS3 recognizes. I've taken the saves, which unlike PS3 game saves which seem to be folders of multiple files, the PS1 save is just a single .psv file, and I put them on a usb stick under a /PS3/Savedata folder, stick that in the PS3 itself and go to the USB utility and it says there's no saved data, and I even included a save for a PS3 game.
To the best of my knowledge, my USB stick isn't all messed up or anything, so am I likely missing something about organizing the saves, or the formatting of the usb stick?
The only thing I can guess is that your USB stick might be formatted in NTFS instead of FAT32. Apparently the PS3 can only use disks formatted with FAT32.

And it's worth it. My PS3 blew out last year with ALL my saves on it. I had my PS3 saves backed up, but not my PS2/1 ones.
